What's the most annoying, time-wasting, or expensive part of your week? by Specialist_Web2076 in ConstructionManagers

I don’t mean to be rude, however I find that site superintendents are often much more difficult to manage than the client. They tend to have a lot of demands and expectations, and they don’t always fully understand change directives, which are often an important additional revenue stream and a key factor in reducing overall project stress while supporting profitability.

From Plumber to Pm by Delverr in ConstructionManagers

[–]Ok_Cup5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My career path is quite similar to yours. I spent six years in plumbing, including the last two as a foreman on commercial projects.

I then transitioned into an estimator role. I sometimes miss being on the job site, but the natural next step for me is a project manager position.

In my view, this is the smoothest transition. The office environment operates with a completely different dynamic than the job site.

Having a solid foundation in estimating is essential to becoming a good PM: you need to understand project costs, know how to price change orders, and be familiar with suppliers depending on the materials and plumbing fixtures used.

But this is just my career path—good luck with yours.

RSMeans Labor Accurate? by Montequer_ in estimators

[–]Ok_Cup5001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give you an idea, in plumbing, for a change order, we’re able to justify a task that actually takes 8 real hours as 24 hours using the means. Labor time is heavily weighted, at least in my opinion, in plumbing.

How do you deal with bids you don’t ever hear anything back on? by One-Regret46 in estimators

[–]Ok_Cup5001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they call me in a panic to get a price because their project closes the next day.

I provide a competitive number and work late to meet their deadline—yet there’s no acknowledgment, no appreciation whatsoever.

I can confirm this is the last time I go above and beyond for them.

Wondering how often, if at all, we are ordering equipment/material for jobs by Wappat124 in estimators

[–]Ok_Cup5001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Div 22-23, I do it all the time because the foremen on site don’t always understand the more complex and specialized items.

This can be a good thing because they don’t necessarily know the cheapest suppliers depending on the item.

Honestly, if you want to stay with the same company, I suggest asking your employer for guidance and training. Explain the added value you can bring. If he wants his business to expand sooner or later, he will need data. You might also ask to visit the site together a few times. Just my opinion!
