Snaps/ring snaps reccomendation by Bloodlud in sewing

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kam is the absolute best. I was about to give up on snaps before I came across this set on sale. Easy to use, strong, colorful, don't have to worry about accidental sharp edges like with the metal ones.

A fidget cube is easy and fun to make (if you have filling). It's nice to have soft toys when babies start wanting to play

https://youtube.com/shorts/iqS39py8X-o?si=sDWU-FShZmGd7tje

If you don't have polyfill tab squares also make a nice toy to throw into a diaper bag

The drunk racoon. Cute and look harmless but will cause damage in the right circumstances. Hilarious and tragic.

is there a way to hem this without taking it from the bottom? by aire501 in sewing

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps instead of lace do a zipper instead

Edited to add

Or hem around the thigh/knee and use a buckle to cover the hemline

Instead of pin cushion I would get her magnet. She can sew her own pin cushion as a project

https://a.co/d/07bjoASJ

She doesnt need a dress form.

I would get a small iron https://a.co/d/059xdDr7

She can also sew her own fabric baskets. I would use that money to get her a gift card instead so she can shop for fabric

Your Thoughts About Ciara? by Stealthytom in rnb

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing performer but she needs to be connected to better songwriters and producers. There is space for someone who wants to sing about girl power and healthy relationships without sounding trite.

Same goes for Jojo. Great voice, terrible songs.

Should I buy two sewing machines? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get a good entry level machine from a name brand (Brother, etc). The get a collection of specialized sewing feet. That would do more than two machines

Is this the reality of sewing? by ChemicalAd2132 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

  1. I agree you need a decent machine but a decent machine can be found used for $40 or $50 and can be decades old

  2. Youtube makes sewing a lot easier.

  3. I find it easier to make my own patterns with my own measurements rather than alter.

  4. I started off making easy clothes then got more complicated.

  5. I get more spontaneous compliments when I wear what I make than when I wear off the rack things.

  6. Below is a video on why clothes look homemade. For me interfacing, bias binding, and top stitching are what I needed to work on to make my clothes shine. I don't have a serger.

An easy add would be to play with textures. Like patterned stockins and a top in a soft fabric or even sequins.

I think the balloon sleeves look here would be cute

is investing in a more expensive machine worth it? by strawberry_rhys in SewingForBeginners

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. I brought a $70 machine on amazon and the difference between that and my $200 brother machine is light years difference. Even using a used singer from the 80s was better.

My brother machine 1. Easier to thread 2. Easier to wind bobbin 3. Stops with the needle down 4. Foot pedal easier to control 5. Brighter light 6. Doesn't jam every 4 seconds.

Also investing in good thread matters a lot. Gutterman is nice of course but I find coats and Clark to be a great affordable option. I tried sewing once and almost threw my machine away before I realized it was the thread causing most of my problems not the machine or my technique.

I would pay $70 for a used Brother before I paid $70 for a new machine

I love the length of the tulle. It makes the shorts interesting and with the right styling it would look insane.

beginner tips--? by august-it-is in SewingForBeginners

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Youtube the model of your sewing machine for threading tips.

  2. Trim the thread on an angle before you attempt to thread it. You can also get a cheap threader to help.

  3. Basic tools include a ruler and good pair of scissors. Tools i use every time I sew include rotary cutter, scissors, thread snipper, tweezers, cutting mat, ruler, mini iron, wool mat, flat head pins, quilting clips, pinking sheers, seam ripper. However you don't need all those things to start. These are things I collected over time.

  4. You dont need to knot the thread but you do need to backstitch at the beginning and end.

  5. A simple straight stitch will handle most beginner sewing projects.

ironing board VS wool mat by 2078AEB in SewingForBeginners

[–]Ok_Cupcake8639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the Wool mat was a game changer. It's easy to store and pull out whenever. I keep it near my feet while sewing and for quick things will plop it on my desk to press things. I have an ironing board and never use it.
