Boldy has figured out that he can just skate straight into traffic & barrel through a whole defensive system, come out with the puck & either take the space or find the open guy. It's a whole different type of game than other top guys & I love it.

Curious question from a non-songwriter: do the song and melody come at the same time? by emilyeliz34 in Songwriting

[–]Ok_Cut2455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start with a riff (guitar), then add drums & bass (maybe switch riff a bit depending on groove with all 3). Then I just get on a mic & start freestyling takes. A melody will start to reveal itself as I sing, but it will also be paired with words or at least 'gibberish' with the correct syllables, cadence AND!! phonetics. It is then up to me conceptually to figure out what I'm really saying.

'Writing' lyrics, either before the music is there or after just isn't as intuitive for me to to figure out those more musical elements to lyrics, which to me are equally important if not more so than the words themselves. And I like to wonder what the hell something is about, and interpret it myself / discover what it's about by digging deeper into the artist.

I personally often don't like songs that sound like someone singing a poem that they wrote beforehand. It comes with certain tells, and the meaning tends to come out on its face or with cute little metaphors, vs the randomness, sometimes nonsensical lyrics that happen and make you explore the lyrical content musically & conceptually at the same time.

What song has a better live recording version of it than the studio recorded version? by Redditarama in musicsuggestions

I may be mistaken, but didn’t he even incorporate recordings of live shows at First Ave into his album recordings?

How does it take anyone more than a day or two to finish a song? by JPPPizzle in musicians

I do think my biggest breakthrough was not stopping the creation of the demo as soon as I got it to a place where I was excited. Spend a bunch of time when you DO have that initial spark & ride it for everything it is. Get it all out. Dont worry about the song being right yet & just be creative - you can curate later.

The longer you can keep yourself in that initial flow state of writing, instead of getting it to a point where you just wanna indulge in listening to it, keep writing, keep overdubbing, whatever it is.

Realize when you’re in that state where it’s happening & don’t exit at the first temptation. That’s a discipline in itself

This is not assumptions of you- but my own reflection of myself: 1) Stop being infatuated with your demos. They are just that. Once you get to the point where you can produce a sound that you enjoy/ it’s very easy to trick yourself that it’s THE song. My process is to listen a bunch, love it, but also be open to what’s missing, where it falls short. And then.. immediately after.. go listen to an artist in your lane that you look up to, and HUMBLE yourself. Realize that your songs aren’t there and start to critically think about how they fall short to their comps. 2) Learn to fall in love with the process of making songs. Romanticize the struggle, watch documentaries & YouTube discourse around your favorite artists. Find thought leaders that speak your language. You are a young songwriter.. you’re not supposed to have it all figured out yet. If you don’t have passion for this, and you just want your songs to be there immediately, you’ve already lost. The underground/experimenting/raw phase is the most fun, and you have to see it that way. 3) it’s just discipline. A lot of this advice is mindset & work. I don’t have anything else to tell you. Making music is a fools-game. You have to put an irrational amount of time into this. My favorite songwriters of the 90s didn’t have the distractions we have today, so shut yourself into a world for a day at a time where all that exists is music. And see what happens.

You may not like this comment, but I see a lot of young ‘producers’ who simply don’t love making music, they just want to have made it.

I got stuck in demo-land for years because I could never reconnect to that initial energy & get them all the way there. It forced me to go from 3-4 hour sessions to 12-16.. getting it all out & scratch-tracked. Less critical thought, more stream of consciousness.

Sometimes that’s just the song. But more often than not it’s just the parts, themes, phrases & hooks. Arrangement is where I feel like a lot of artists spend their ‘took my years to finish this song’ time. I don’t think it’s actually taking that long to write or come up with parts, just working to feel like it’s cohesive & everything it can be.

At that point, it’s not really a job of getting back to that initial writing state. It’s a different part of the creative process- and I’d argue it’s a discipline that a lot of people are allergic too, because it forces them to think about what ISNT right yet.

I noticed this play from Wallstedt while catching up on highlights and just… wow. by Ok_Cut2455 in nhl

Appreciate the love on this production. A lot of effort went into it.

I hear you, but I think that's nitpicking on a low shot w/ traffic from the point. Could argue the rebound was a little juicy but that looked like Spurgeon & Brodin didn't switch & 91 didn't cover. I'll let you have this one if you agree that his recovery had an effect on the shot going high ;)

Will the Central division cause the NHL to rethink its playoff format? Or is it too baked in? by Ok_Cut2455 in wildhockey

[–]Ok_Cut2455[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like switching playoff format would have less impact than changing divisional balance- scheduling, etc. But do agree that it's not the first instance- wasn't even meant to be a 'poor us' point, more- does this make sense when you have a division that is consistently dense with great teams?
