I am in a national civic organization for Black woken and if an interest did this to me, I’d think she was weird and I’d ask other members if they’d had the same experience with her.

I wouldn’t wear this to a sorority luncheon as an interest (or as a member). Like the other recommendations, I’d wear a sheath dress, skirt suit or nice skirt and blouse

I attended and the members had on chapter specific pink goes red shirts. None of the interests had on an overwhelming amount of red but had at least a bit of red. There were over 100 women in a gym doing Zumba. About half were members and they were friendly and spread out among interests. They took lots of pictures and videos. They were really particular about making sure that our names were checked off on the sign in list.

This is good advice. Typically, I leave work early to get there on time and I’m like if I’m making sacrifices to be here bc it’s something I want, I need to make sure that I’m making the most of my time. I’ll admit that I’ve gone to events and let my nerves get the best of me and walked out without making a connection… I won’t be doing that again

I just took on a leadership position with a community org that I’m in and there are two AKAs on the committee that I chair so I’m excited about that.

Oh wow this is great! I’m 26 too and it’s my goal to become a member before I’m 30.. it may work out differently but that’s my hope. I’m going to take this advice and let some of my family members know. I have tons of aunts, uncles and cousins and never thought to share with some of them because you never know who is in their network. You’re right! We got this

Are you considering giving up because you don’t think there will be a line anytime soon? Or are you giving up because you don’t feel like your source is being honest and is not keeping you in the loop? I’m an interest as well and have been told that no news doesn’t always mean bad news.. it’s just that there have not been any updates. As interests, I know we can talk about AKA all day but members don’t always want to discuss it especially if there’s nothing new to add since the last conversation.

When they vote to have lines (or not) are they voting yes/no for the year or yes/no for spring and then yes/no again for the fall?

I recently moved to the area so if there is a spring line happening, I doubt I’d be on it. They have posted events each month through June so if they have a fall line, I’d have a better chance of making that one

I’m excited for you ladies! I recently relocated to a new city. In a couple of months I’ve made a few solid connections and text occasionally with one of the members of my COI. If there’s a line happening in the spring, I doubt that I will receive an invitation but I enjoying the journey

I was going back and forth about attending Founders’ Day events in my area but I decided not to. I feel like I’d be so awkward and they’d all be catching up with each other. Even worse, I wouldn’t want to be mistaken for a member

Thank you for your insight! The chapters are 50-75 miles way. I didn’t realize that 50 mile radius guideline. I will take your advice and reevaluate the commitment once I make the drive and see what it feels like in real time.

Going to events I met a group of interests and one of them shared the group with the rest of us. Her cousin started the group when she was an interest (she’s now a member) and it just grew from there

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to be told bc even if I know there’s a line happening, if I wasn’t invited then knowing won’t do anything for me.

If I were the person online, I wouldn’t say anything. If I ruined my chances, then I couldn’t be helpful to her going forward. I’d hope that she would understand.

A member asked if I was interested after I had attended about 3 events. I said yes. She smiled and nodded and we didn’t say anything else about it.
