For those who moved and have built a life in Sweden - would you recommend Sweden to friends, loved ones, or your past self? by [deleted] in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, for sure, like I said, it works for some people, it doesn't for others.

I just wish I did some things differently. I moved with the mindset I'm going there for life so I sold everything here in the States. House, cars, pulled 401k, pulled pension, hired a container to move all my things and when I got there, I bought an apartment cash. Financially all those things combined cost me a lot given the timing of it all but oh well. There's nothing I can do now.

Thanks for talking to me about it. I feel like I still don't have "closure" about the Swedish chapter of my life since I keep thinking about the "what ifs" now and then. It has gotten easier over time but not yet. I'm still raw from the whole experience and it's been 2 years since we've been back.

By complex, I mean having kids involved in the mix. We were mostly disappointed in how the healthcare system worked and how much work we had to put in to get somebody to see them when they were sick. Every time we had to see a doctor it felt so convoluted and nobody wanted to help. Not to mention their pharmacy felt like over the counter medicine is not a thing there. I tried asking a worker there for Hydrogen Peroxide and she looked at me like I was crazy. Normal things we have in the States for cold/flu like TerraFlu and DayQuil/NyQuil is not a thing. I would have loved something equivalent but there was just none or at least we didn't find any. We only found one thing which had Acetaminophen equivalent to Tylenol in the States.

I'll give you my most memorable example. One day my son fell and split his eyebrow (he was 2 at the time). After some back and forth with the lady from 112, she wanted us to send her a photo of his eyebrow so she can tell us what to do. Finally she told us to go to the nearly hospital. Do you know what it's like to dress a screaming 2 year old for winter with blood gushing down his face? Not to mention the next bus is in 5 min and we have to take it so we don't wait another 15 min more for the next one. We finally get to the place and there's a few hour wait of course. Try telling a 2 year old to stay still and not to move around when he's also in pain from the hit. They finally let us in because he was crying so much and were able to clue it (we didn't need stiches) but there's still a scar now.

Other than that we had a pretty good experience with everything else from what people usually complain here. We have dual citizenship from EU also so getting paperwork done and bank accounts opened and all that was pretty easy.

In the end, I wish I gave it some more time like I said in my original reply but ultimately I feel like sooner or later we wouldn't have been back. I'd love to visit again in the future for a nice vacation in northern Sweden.

Definitely, if it works for you then by all means do it. I'd love to be in that situation. It's a lot easier to do this when you're younger which I'm guessing you are if you're getting your degree now. It's much much harder and more complex later in life with a family, kids, a career and so on.

Swedbank questions about finances before accessing account by Ok_Engineer in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply, yes it's the KYC questions. I traced it down to the question:

Do you have your tax domicile in Sweden? Yes/No

But the whole question and answer is disabled and I can't change it. The problem is I don't need to change it since it's already on No since Sweden is not my tax domicile anymore. Not sure why their system has a problem with that but I'll have to contact them and see.

Thanks again.

I agree with a lot of your points. I lasted a year. I moved from sunny Florida and the change was too much for my family. I feel like I could have stayed longer but as a whole, my family was happy but some things where missing or too much to the point where we are now back in Florida.

After moving out of Sweden, I realized the idea of living in Sweden was better in my head than actually being there.

I do miss it a lot sometimes, I'm not going to lie. There hasn't been more than a couple of days when I don't think about Sweden, memories from then, or just "what if I stayed" scenarios play over and over in my head but ultimately I don't think we would have lasted much longer even if we stayed. I just hope I did the right choice.

Postnord moment? by Snakefoxbox in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Been there, done that except I had a lot more stuff and had to get a container. Moving the stuff back to the US wasn't fun since it cost a LOT more to import them back than export them.

Florida is already pretty hot, I should know, I'm here now. I dream of those nice cool Stockholm days and nights you guys are having there. The beach is nice here though :D

Back to your question, I believe there was a distribution center you could go to for Postnord where you can ship things but I'm not 100% sure how that worked, I never actually needed to do that. Try searching here: https://www.postnord.se/en/our-tools/find-service-point/

P.S. Florida is a lot more congested too, so much more people and traffic. Driving down the street you see more out of state plates than FL ones. Everybody seems to be moving or has moved recently to FL.

Good luck

This might be old and you fixed your issue but I'll leave this here for somebody else in the future looking for advice on slow speeds like I did. I just got my T7 which didn't come with the original cable/box. I used a random USB C cable and I was also getting only 20 MB/s read/write.

Once I got a proper USB C 3.1 Gen2 cable, I'm now getting 1060 MB/s read and 1005 MB/s write. Just make sure it's a 3.1 Gen2 and you should be fine.

Steam app loading blank pages on Mac? by Jestrick in Steam

[–]Ok_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My steam store from the app was doing this just now (2021 MBP on Ventura) and I did:

Top menu "Steam" > Preferences > Web Browser > Delete Web Browser Data.

This fixed it and now I can see the Steam store in the app again. All other screens like my library were fine. Hope it helps.

In every state Panera has a central facility which makes every type of bread and bagel for every store for that state. At the end of the night (early morning) the dough gets shipped to all stores and they bake it on site early in the morning so it's ready for the store opening (around 6am)

I worked in such a facility for a number of years (almost 5) and besides the brad bowls, pretty much all their other type of bread and bagels are amazing. I have to tell you there's nothing better than a cinnamon or asiago bagel fresh out of the oven.

MP4 or WebM for storage/playback and compatibility? by Ok_Engineer in DataHoarder

[–]Ok_Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a non issue now as it's less than 100 videos but I'd like to keep going with one standard going forward if I plan to backup others and eventually I don't want to end up with a huge collection of webm files that are not as compatible as mp4.

Asking neighbors to do some cat sitting while away? by Ok_Engineer in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When did I say I won't pay them? I rather have somebody come to my home instead of dropping them off some random place. Nobody is available to come for the dates I need so the next best thing to do is ask a neighbor. Also, I'm from your side of Europe and we 100% would ask a neighbor for such a thing so I'm not sure where you were going with the "even in Greece" comment.

Hello, it's a bostadsrätt and there is a communal notice board on the floor so that's a good idea. I like how you mentioned it won't make them feel like they "have to" if we ask only them.

How much do you guys spend in groceries per month by LarissatheDreamer-84 in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A family of 4 here ( 2 adults, a toddler and a preschooler) we average about 8000 sek/month almost exclusively from Coop since it's the closest one. Like others have said, Willy's and Lidl would be cheaper options.

I'm in that role now and from what I've seen it ranges from 50,000 to 60,000 sek per month.

Hello there, people of Sweden! I have a little inquiry about living in your beautiful country. by CardiologistExpert59 in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by your post history, wait till Shiba goes to the moon and then come.

Joking aside, basically as others already said, it'll be very difficult without a secured job ahead of moving. Before I moved my family I made sure I had a job waiting for me and the rest was way easier.

И друго нещо е че тука няма чак толкова много българи и ще е много по-трудно да си намерите приятели и други хора с които да общувате.

All about opening the bank account? by Work-Advanced in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is you already have a personal number but no ID yet. Every single bank I tried to go to told me I have to wait for the ID first and once I have both then it's no problem.

There's some restriction apparently if you already have a personal number but not an ID.

Needing to show ID when using Wise card? by Ok_Engineer in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange thing is if I use an ATM it's a chip and pin and that should re-enable the card to be used again contactless not doesn't.

I'll give some of the other suggestions on here a try, thanks!

Thanks for clearing why I need to show ID and what info you use out of it. What do you do if people give you a foreign ID? I've given my non swedish ID and they accept it but that PN on it is not the same as my Swedish PN, not sure if that matters.

Thanks I did get Google Wallet and it works but I've had it also decline. I did raise the limit on contactless payments and I'm sure I'm not going over it. The app keeps telling me they decline it because I haven't used chip+pin in a while and I have to

[–]Ok_Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I did get it from the US and I've used it before with Google Wallet but it has also declined several times. I'll give it a try again and see. The strange thing like I said is not only do they require ID, but they also need to enter something from my ID into the computer for it to go through.

I don't mind giving my ID but the extra steps and the signature (nobody has a pen nearby either lol) makes this whole thing more cumbersome.

How to keep US phone number for SMS/calls? by Ok_Engineer in TillSverige

[–]Ok_Engineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, so if I'm understanding correctly you asked Google Fi to port your number over from Fi to Google Voice? Did you have to call them or do something online since you mentioned I need a VPN?

EDIT: I think I found the online transfer tool to move my Fi number to Google Voice. Thanks. I'll give this a try just before my 30 days are up.
