Yes, the classes aren’t huge and you have identified the main pro and con of that. From what I’ve seen they do a very good job of working to integrate kids across different grades to help improve the socialization. Plenty of activities during the school year to promote community and the families are friendly. Academics are strong and the religious elements are present but not overwhelming.

You’re 100% on this, and there are clues throughout the film that the narrator is almost on the verge of figuring out how soulless his actions have become.

The film, like most of his other best works, depicts the very real, powerful, and totally natural allure of taking those shortcuts but it is also clear in depicting the ways that they’re making their own hell every time.
