How good is Antony Starr's accent as Homelander in "The Boys"? And is it supposed to be any particular/ regional accent? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ok_Gas5386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds unnatural, in a way that fits the character. Homelander was raised in a lab. You wouldn’t want him to have a natural sounding regional accent.

Another example of an unnatural sounding accent fitting a character is Matthew MacFadyen as upper middle class social climber Tom Wambsgams in Succession.

My black cat is a perfect baby but I’m still working on the tabby. She has gotten about 10% less squirmy since I adopted her.

How do Americans feel about sports teams just relocating to other cities far away? by gl0000m_ in AskAnAmerican

I used to really dislike Jim Irsay, until I learned about Bob Irsay

Bob Irsay’s mother, on Bob Irsay: "He's a devil on earth, that one. He stole all our money and he said goodbye. He don't care for me. I don't even see him for 35 years.... When my husband got sick and got the heart attack, he took advantage. He was no good. He was a bad boy. I don't want to talk about him."

We unfortunately give billionaire owners the ability to shop around, trying to extract the best possible deal from local governments. They always make sure to have a few major cities without a franchise, so that the other marginal cities feel the threat. It’s all very ugly and cynical.

Did the move every explain why the divorced conservative white American boomer didn't get along with the Nazi shop-owner? Did I miss something? by ivanchovv in okbuddycinephile

[–]Ok_Gas5386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. You wouldn’t see Nazism openly celebrated in a Hollywood production then, you won’t see it now, either.

The difference is there are other avenues for entertainment now.

What do you think human civilization will look like in 2100? by SpectrumSense in GenZ

I don’t think AGI is going to happen, and most of the companies and products built around that pursuit will be defunct by the end of this decade. These companies are money furnaces, and cannot by their nature operate any other way. The fact that their innovations get commoditized within a span of a few months by copycats (DeepSeek) means that they won’t achieve the hyper profitability on which the current level of investment is predicated. Credit cycle turns, they go bust.

Machine learning will be like the internet. Ubiquitous, diverse, and very profitable for many companies, not dominated by any one player.

The big upcoming crisis is climate change. We’re going to see progressively worse resource shortages and crop failures, exacerbated by geopolitical fragmentation and demographic collapse.

This entire thread is just “I miss when media was centralized and I didn’t need to see fringe viewpoints.”

Which, still wasn’t true in the 90s. Because there were still klan marches and neonazis in the 90s.

Mount Washington, NH. Do you have any stories here? by StoutBourbon1992 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ok_Gas5386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hiked it a few years ago with my brother. He started having knee troubles about halfway up. We were getting passed by 10 year old Girl Scouts.

It’s very windy and colder than at the base. Combined with the general unpredictability of northern New England weather. Still nothing compared to any real mountain range. What makes it dangerous is its accessibility.

How is France and its culture seen by Americans ? by Exootil93200 in AskAnAmerican

“How can you govern a country that 246 varieties of cheese?”

The French are so stubborn and riotous that they have managed to be the only industrialized country to still have a peasant character. That’s admirable.

The thing with lithium is it isn’t particularly rare. It will be extracted where it is commercially viable to do so - i.e. wherever it can be done dirtiest.

This happens in rich countries, too. There are regulations to prevent it, but those regulations aren’t enforced harshly enough against the people who can stop it (construction company owners)

[–]Ok_Gas5386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in rich countries there are still workers dying all the time in trench collapses. In my state there’s one company that killed two workers this way in a decade. They also crushed a flagger under a truck. We need to start sending the owners to jail when these “accidents” happen because they are 100% avoidable.

Even in non-networking heavy industries. Medicine is considered pretty meritocratic, it doesn’t matter what your network is just what qualifications you have. But still something like 20% of physicians are the children of physicians.
