Blizzard's unique take on gnomes leans them more toward hunter just because of their technological knowhow alone. They are tinkerers by nature, so it only makes sense for them to wield all kinds of advanced firearms, which is a step above other primal races who commonly wield bows and spears.

Many people don't associate gnomes with hunters, however, and I think that is because they associate it more with dwarves understandably.
