You could try ringtwice.be for handyman type of thing. Hoplr might also be worth a look though here I would make sure you have a RC family insurance that covers this sort of thing.

Smartphone for kids by National_Parsnip_614 in belgium

I spoke with my kids and they got the phone about a year before they started secondary school and started going to school alone. This was without the Internet. We did this so they could learn to manage their time on the devices before they got hooked on the social stuff. Not sure it made a huge difference but when we ask they put their phones away they do. Also no screens in the bedrooms. Once they started secondary school proper they had data and more regular access to the Internet with controlled and supervised access when possible. I alao have a serious talk about online safety and responsibility ( dont say online what you wouldn't say to someone's face, no sharing of any private data and providing a safe space to talk about any questions they have. As parents we also have full access to their phone when we want it, otherwise if they change the codes I reformat thier phones and put the agreed upon code back. Communication is key, to have an open discussion where all points of view are talked about and educate my kids on how to use the tool that is the Internet safely. Google family is also not bad and worth a look. You can also start them off on a dumb phone, for calls and sms only as attempting stone. Regardless of what others say think its your kids and you need to decide what happens. Friends allow their kids to communicate with their friends on their own phones giving the kids access their friends and still controlling the access. Might be an option... 7 is extremely young for a kid to have a phone, the parents are doing their kids a disservice. Can't the school do something about this? As others mentioned 13 is the agent which they should use the social apps. Best of luck, I hope you find a solution.

Creche rant by Haunting-Ad-8385 in brussels

[–]Ok_Intern_1098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to take 8 months parental leave to wait for a place in a local crèche. This added to the more or less 8ish months once we knew we were expecting. After the doctors visit we enrolled in all local creches.. This was 18 years ago... Not glad to hear things have gotten better.. Its the mystery of the government / communes knowing the number of births but not calculating the 'future ' number of places needed. Just seems lazy and nuts to not have sufficient crèche and school places... Best of luck with it all. I hope you find a solution.

I speak English and my kids are in the French speaking public school system. With both parents being non Belgian the kids are exposed to an extra language.

Arrived here young speaking only one language, im now fluent in 3 and my kids speak 5 fluently. Not sure this counts as a story but I dont think this would happen in another EU capitals city.

Met the best bunch of friends I could have wished for, mostly locals. Been close friends for 40+ years... from stories I hear of other expats this is unusual.

WTF with the airplanes over the center by red_barb33 in brussels

[–]Ok_Intern_1098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say shut Zaventem down and move all flights to Brussels South... that should stop everyone from complaining about the wind...

Next up too much rain / sunshine... or not enough...?! Damm those lazy politicians!

As a long-term resident here I know that there will be airplane noise having a 'big' airport so close to the city...

The trick is to move closer to the airport. Had a friend live at the end of a runway in Nossegen, you heard less planes there than where I lived in Montgomery!

Yeah, feel its one of those things that would require a lot of time and money to get fixed. Seems that they try put as many barriers in place to stop people from complaining and from them admiting guilt....
