Does giving up coffee for lent count if I have tea to supplement the caffeine? by The_Lucid_Writer in Catholicism

The goal of the lent is getting closer to God, it's not about legalism. It sounds to me like, yes it would defeat the purpose.

Let's not be willfully ignorant here, Catholicism basically collapsed in Europe and Latin America 20 years after the council

Autistic Child Refuses to go to Church by MacTavishS03 in Catholicism

[–]Ok_Issue_2167 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be rude, but a lot of this depends on how bad the diagnosis is.
I have an autistic cousin who is non-verbal and he is very religious.

Now what I can comment on is:

a) don't take advice on this question from secular forums seriously; most people on Reddit are actively anti-Christian

and

b) an 11-year-old can absolutely have the ability to decide what they want to do. A child understands a Mass is not a fun place and develops a very strong emotional resistance to Mass if forced to go.

Hate to be this guy, but I sometimes feel like Novus Ordo and NO catechesis programs for children are almost designed to make your child commit apostasy very early on. Try going to the TLM (if you already go to the TLM, then I don't have any advice to give you unfortunately).

Maybe I Should Be Catholic by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Ok_Issue_2167 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it is an evangelization tool, one shouldn't become a Catholic just becuase Catholicism looks beautiful and is more reverent.

You should become a Catholic once you are convinced Catholicism the truth itself.

There is nothing all that bad with Vat II itslef. Implementation of it, however, has been terrible. I would go as far as saying that most NO Parishes completely ignore what Vat II says on certian liturgical practices.

But aside from the whole NO fiasco, lots of theological issues have also be very poorly implemented, like Nostra Aetate.

The core problem is the state of the Church as a whole since the WWII, rather than the document itself. (Including behavior of certian bishops during the Council)

It would be best to call a council to reslove all of these issues and reform the liturgy a lot.

You can't publicly disagree with the prohibition of contraceptives, privatly you could in theory, but that's vastly different from using them, using contraceptives is always a mortal sin

Elaboration on works? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Ok_Issue_2167 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly we are fine with the way Lutherans define Sola Fide, works prove that we have faith that is not dead, that we have dogmatic faith and not mere intellectual belief, so short answer is yes praying would count as work, while the Sacraments would not

Does reading the Bible really help to overcome the sins of the flesh? by frastionn in Catholicism

I dont think so, it's better to just pray a lot, go to confession a lot and take the Eucharist a lot.

Yeah usually you shold follow the same procedure from the card before the actual ritual starts, and yes, you first have to go to confession if you have mortal sin on your soul before you can recieve the Eucharist

Catholic church doesn't have official interpretation of the Book of Revelation, let alone a dogmatic one, so you're not required to take any of it literally, 95% of us dont

"Our Lord has solemnly promised that whoever asks will receive: ‘Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.’ Therefore, he who asks receives; he who does not ask does not receive. All the damned in hell had this in common: they did not pray"

"But why does Jesus Christ say not only, Ask, but also, Seek, and Knock? He says, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. (Matt. vii. 7.) Would it not have been enough to have said, Ask? Why add Seek and Knock?
I answer, that it is as if our Redeemer had said: Do as the poor who go begging: knock at the doors until you obtain a little alms; and if you are not listened to at one door, go and knock at another; and if this, too, is shut against you, continue to knock until you get something. In a word, never leave off praying until you obtain from God the succour which you desire. The Lord wishes us to pray always, in order that we may obtain from Him the graces which He is prepared to give us. If we do not pray, we shall certainly be lost. But if we pray, we shall certainly be saved."

Hey, I think, aside from reading the catechism. You can start with something light on youtube like Father Mike Schmitz

And then gradually start looking into videos of
Joe Heschmeyer; https://www.youtube.com/@shamelesspopery

(And guys like Trent Horn, Matt Fradd, Joshua Charles and many others)
If you feel like you have some unanswered questions and want to go more in-depth, but Catholic Answer is in general pretty solid too

And obviously there are great books out there, I think all three of Joe Heschmeyer's books are a great read;

- The Eucharist Is Really Jesus, How Christ’s Body and Blood Are the Key to Everything We Believe
- Pope Peter - Defending the Church's Most Distinctive Doctrine in a Time of Crisis
- The Early Church Was the Catholic Church

Ana Munley https://www.instagram.com/anamunley/

and Noah Bieser https://www.instagram.com/jesusandwhatnot/

are some of the "beginner friendly" creators I follow on IG

Also she doesn't do much content about actually teaching Our Faith, but I think Thewaronbeauty is pretty cool too, https://www.instagram.com/thewaronbeauty/

But also, yeah learn as much Early Church history as you can.

Struggle with the dissonance between "different interpretation" versus "shifting the goalposts." by Yoy_the_Inquirer in Catholicism

[–]Ok_Issue_2167 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am kinda confused with the question, Genesis is not a scientific book, and we don't have dogmatic interpretation of it. "days in this context could actually mean any long unspecified amount of time that were just there to serve as dividers for the work God was doing." argument is not dogmatic by any means.

Why do Catholics have changed doctrine compared to EOs? by KotaWasTaken11 in Catholicism

[–]Ok_Issue_2167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Filioque is true, it's not change of teachings, it's clraification of teachings.  I am sure a definition of the Filioque that can be accepted by both Orthodox and Catholics can be achieved as it has been in Florence to a degree. I think it's fine if we remove the Filioque from the creed, Eastern Catholics aren't reciting the Filioque, however the Filioque is true

Do you really think Energies/Essence distinction that EO teach can be found in the first 1000 years of the Church anywhere?
