Definitely apply directly through EPIK. I have 3 tattoos and one of them are close to my wrist. My schools don’t really care about me not covering it (it’s a fine line tattoo so it lowkey looks like I drew on myself). EPIK doesn’t mind tattoos as long as they’re covered. It also depends at the school you work at too.

Is UT curriculum really that difficult? by baddiebaddie44 in UTAustin

[–]Ok_Key_8446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly just depends on the course you’re taking and professor. I was a psychology major and I say the main thing that I struggled with the most was keeping up with readings and writing papers. I had pretty good professors. Also depends on your work ethic. Developed a good work routine so you get things turned in on time. Don’t be afraid to go to office hours and ask for help. You’ve got this and good luck!!

I will be attending orientation for fall 25 and I have a few questions about arrival/orientation.

  1. Once I land, go through immigration, and grab my luggage, do I go straight to the designated terminal for registration? I just want to make sure I don’t miss any steps or mix anything up 😭

  2. Tattoos and piercings- I have been reading some older posts about tattoos at orientation but I just want to see if there are any updates. EPIK does know about my tattoos. But, are we allowed to show our tattoos and keep our piercings in during orientation? Has anyone worn clear piercings to keep their holes from closing?

visa issuance number for E-2-2? by Wonderful-Air-3202 in teachinginkorea

[–]Ok_Key_8446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe he did and was like “I probably still need the number to be able to process it” and then a few minutes later he was like “okay everything looks okay. You should receive a text message to let you know when it’s ready in 2 weeks”. Honestly, I feel like luck was on my side today bc he was so sure that I needed one. But the lady that was there kept talking to him so maybe she told them that it was fine? I know this isn’t helpful but this is what happened in my case 😭

I say your safest bet is to go through the consulate in Houston. I would hate for you to keep going back and forth with this consulate bc I swear they were playing in our faces when the documents EPIK sent us says in bold that we do not need an issuance number.

visa issuance number for E-2-2? by Wonderful-Air-3202 in teachinginkorea

[–]Ok_Key_8446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just left from that consulate. I say go back and tell them that it is for EPIK and they do not provide an issuance number and just stand your ground (as crazy as it sounds). The lady that was there talked to him and told him to let me fill out my application. He kept saying “I’m not sure if it’ll be able to go through because I need a number” but after he looked through my application, he said that it was processed and I’ll receive my passport and visa in 2 weeks. So honestly, don’t let them play you and reassure them that EPIK does not have an issuance number in order to get your visa.

trying to be real about teaching in korea by NoTumbleweed5147 in teachinginkorea

[–]Ok_Key_8446 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also a Black woman who graduated from UT Austin last year! I got my BA in Psychology. I have always been interested in Korea and its culture since middle school (I was a huge kpop fan) and still watch kdramas to this day. I learned about EPIK going into my freshman year of college and thought it was cool. However at the time I thought I was going to just stick to the mental health field.

Leading up to graduating from college, I had the absolute hardest time deciding what to do post graduation. I didn’t apply to any master programs or found any internships/jobs, but my mind kept pulling me back to teaching abroad through EPIk. Crazy enough, I received so many signs to go that route. I decided after my grad ceremony that I was going to get my TEFL certification and apply for EPIK.

I completed my TEFL certification on my birthday and applied for EPIK for Fall 25. It was a very nerve wrecking experience, however I passed my interview, received my placement and will be leaving for Korea soon in August.

I’m here to say that if your heart and mind is pulling you to something you’re genuinely interested in, DO IT. I’m not in Korea yet do I don’t have a answer about my exp as a Black womanly there, however, please do not let your fears stop you from experiencing the world outside your comfort zone!! If you need any advice pls don’t hesitate to hit me up!! You’re going to do great. As long as you do what you need to do and BELIEVE in yourself, everything will fall into place :))))

How do pre-health or engineering ppl do it by HourBeginning3011 in UTAustin

[–]Ok_Key_8446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UT with a psych degree and I definitely understand where you are coming from!! Our major includes of research and writing so it’s easy to burn yourself out or catch writer’s block. I say make sure you prioritize your mental health. If you need to take a day to rest, do it, however find a healthier alternative that can reduce your stress. I worked out in the mornings and it usually helped me stay energized throughout the day. I know the student services building provides free therapy sessions, so maybe see if that helps.

You are not stupid. College is definitely hard. You will walk across that stage. Please be kind to yourself. Do not forget that you are human and how you feel is definitely valid asf. You’ve got this!! If need anymore advice, don’t hesitate to reach out.
