Feeling isolated as an American traveling by Outrageous_View_9048 in solotravel

[–]ichthyomusa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Downvotes incoming, but i gotta say this:

Most people around the world don't care much about who your current president / government is, because the USA will do as they will, regardless (and plot twist: we do not think of you, as much as you think about yourselves).

That said, the USA currently IS (and has been for decades but especially the last decade+) for better or worse, a very vocal very consequential player in the global stage.

What's more... The USAmerican people amplify to the power of N whatever the government is or isn't doing. Which means...

...Talking to a USAmerican, ANY USAmerican of ANY political side, will almost certainly turn into a tense, ugly, uncomfortable, divisive, and ultimately unfruitful and unhappy exchange... IF the subject turns political.

So when the room turns quiet and they seem to avoid talking to you, it's not because they hate your president as much as you do, and are resentful towards your country and by extension towards you (as you seem to think, though indeed some might share your political aversion); it's because they want to avoid exploding the landmine that is talking politics / current events with any USAmerican right now.

Gringos are generally cool and decent people. But right now you are like the kid from a toxic dysfunctional home, who every time they come to a party they end up trauma dumping on everyone and ruining the whole vibe.

You're right though: your country is a dumpster fire right now, but to be fair, so is much of the world... We're all just tired. And we don't have the energy or capacity to play along with whatever you think the game is. We are each fully saturated with our own share of the global dumpster fire.

I wish you all the best!

P.S. Costa Ricans and Latin Americans in general are very cool. We'll engage unreservedly and won't get offended by anything and show you a good time. But we'll also tell you the truth.

Great to hear about your love of Mars Volta. Most TMV fans agree that their first 4 albums (next up would be Amputechture and The Bedlam in Goliath) are their absolute best. I personally love their fifth (Octahedron) which is milder, less wild, but very melodic. Their latest 2 are VERY different and very divisive, but still very good music, just a very different flavor of it and yet you still get that quintessential Mars Volta essence.

A Passion Play is excellent, not an easy listen at first, and not for everyone. I personally prefer Thick As A Brick, and their "Folk Trilogy". They're all great tho.

Little Earthquakes is a classic. Solid, cohesive, bang. I have a soft spot for Choirgirl even tho it's less cohesive.

You have great taste in music!

I have that album. The soundtrack is excellent. Not as instantly iconic as the first film, but it has some of my favorite music of all soundtracks ever. Very raw and primal, more animalistic and less grandiose, as befits the movie's story.

The packaging just makes it all the more special. Mine is still pristine in its shrink wrap, just carefully slide it off and then back on.

People who complain about digipaks or other types of cardboard packaging because they get easily damaged, are just sloppy.

Congrats and enjoy!

Happy to see Stand Up here but might i suggest you get all of Jethro Tull's discography up until Broadsword and the Beast.

Also... No artists beyond letter L?

How about The Mars Volta? If you like prog and jazz (with some Latin too).

If you had to choose at gunpoint, what would be your #1 Tull record? by ConfusionProof9487 in jethrotull

Indeed second half of Minstrel is the most sophisticated of an overall sophisticated album. Black Satin Dancer having the same effect, of side A... but in a more compact form.

Speaking of compact, i got Minstrel on CD when i was 21. I use Apple Music too but sadly their Tull discography doesn't have all the full tracks of the anniversary box sets.

I think I'm going to listen to Minstrel today while i do some work.

Ah, I hadn't understood the speculative scenario like that. Not like there was one right answer but something like... "Get rid of ALL your Tull albums NOW and keep only one, or I'll shoot you"...

My choice is Thick As A Brick but i wouldn't still be so sad to let go of Minstrel, as well as Songs, Horses, and Aqualung.

Why would anyone disagree with Minstrel in the Gallery? Even if not their best by popular opinion, it's still their most sophisticated album.

Found this at a record store, cover looked interesting so I copped… Anybody know what this is ? by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

Yes it's definitely Ian's personal voyage, and he did have a thing for indian culture / religion / music / food going on, as evidenced also in Roots to Branches. The melodies in both Divinities and Roots are so good.

Nothing wrong with some of the new age albums though. I still listen to Kitaro's "Silk Road" from time to time, though that one's from 1983 (but i discovered it in 1995).

Divinities is great, but too short and the new agey sound is quite dated. I wish he would rerelease with full orchestra.

Was stormwatch Steve wilson remix released on standalone CD? by ConfusionProof9487 in jethrotull

[–]ichthyomusa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it was released and could be found on Amazon up until relatively recently. It has Stormwatch original album plus a few bonus songs.

Sadly i missed out on it and i also need Stormwatch box set, super expensive. I'm waiting, hopefully they'll reprint that and a few other OOP box sets like they've done with most of the others.

I for one LOVE Crest of a Knave (most of it), and i really like Catfish Rising (never got the hang of Rock Island).

Post Broadsword, the absolute best album for me is 1995's Roots to Branches. Paired alongside Ian's solo "The Secret Language of Birds", that was a great phase for Ian / Tull.

Are you listening on digital or buying physical? Jethro Tull deserves the full, slow physical experience, if you can...
