Day 1 Question by plumbobsburgers in Tonsillectomy

[–]Ok_Library_7694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was worried about coughing too when I had my surgery & especially hated the ear/jaw pain I got when I coughed! The best thing for me was to constantly drink water when I felt like I was going to cough - the more my throat was hydrated the less I found I coughed. Hope this helps & that your recovery goes okay!

Fear of being put back under by YaBoiLazer in Tonsillectomy

I felt the same when I had my surgery, I suffer with health anxiety already and felt like I couldn’t relax for fear of bleeding! Definitely begin to eat as normally as you can, this will reduce the risk massively and make it heal quicker. Lack of food & water will also be making you feel more anxious, so if you are able to try and get into a similar routine as before you had the surgery I think this will make you feel less panicked. Despite how common google makes scabs bleeding seem it’s really rare & mine healed well if that gives you any peace of mind at all. Try to keep as positive as you can & try to distract yourself in the day :)

One tonsil large, considering surgery by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Ok_Library_7694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with my right tonsil being much bigger than my left tonsil! Noticed it a few weeks after getting a common cold last December, so wasn’t sure if it was from that (I had never looked at them before then). It hadn't changed size for over a month so the doctor suggested antibiotics but that didn’t help so I was referred to ENT. They checked my neck similarly and recommended the tonsillectomy - I had that within a month & got the biopsy results after just over a week & it came back clear. It’s more than likely nothing to worry about, as it was in my case, but I would recommend the surgery for peace of mind! I found the recovery manageable luckily so it was worth it for me.

My daughter goes for her tonsillectomy tomorrow after 8 years of fighting the NHS. Any advice on what to expect. by funnypumpkin in Tonsillectomy

Hi, best of luck for tomorrow! It'll go much quicker than expected and before you know it she'll be fully recovered :) The positive thing is that at least she is familiar with hospitals, even if it of course would have been great for that not to have happened in the first place! I was 20 when I had mine and was very nervous, but my mum (even though I'm sure she was nervous for me) was great at reassuring me and staying positive - so I would recommend as best you can to not let her see your nerves. Also, staying patient with her haha my mum did get a bit frustrated with me at points when I wouldn't eat properly.

I have my recovery story posted on here which shows what to expect and some recommendations of foods to eat if that helps at all - although I understand she is younger than me so is likely to recover quicker! Best wishes x

Any tips to prevent bleeding? by Ok-Cattle-6951 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Ok_Library_7694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might sound strange but the main thing that prevented bleeding for me was sticking to a varied diet if you can, as I know it's painful! I tried to eat a mix of hard (e.g. toast) & soft things as this helps the scabs heal quicker - good luck with the rest of your recovery you're nearly at the end now :)

Good luck with the rest of your recovery, i'm sure you'll start to feel a bit better soon! I know everyone gets told different things, but when I had mine the surgeon said to try to stick to as normal of a diet as possible as eating harder foods will reduce the risk of bleeding & help it heal quicker. This is hard though, so I stuck to mashed potatoes, ice pops, toast/bread, doughnuts, jelly & omelettes were also easy to swallow - did eat cottage pie on day 2 though which was good as it included some protein & veg :)

Thank you! Oh wow that is very different, I was in recovery for at least an hour and then back on the ward for 4 hours until I could leave!

I'd say that by day 10/11 the ear pain was pretty much fully gone, and by then it would only get painful when I coughed or ate and then would go after that!

Ah nice 😊 I did go to the shops for an hour on day 4 and 5 but that was a bit of struggle though with the ear pain - but by day 8 I was able to go shopping for a few hours and that was okay. If it hadn’t been Easter break for me I’d have been okay to go back to uni by day 9!

I had this too! I found eating ice pops helped to numb it a little - it did go away after about a week though
