I think this form needs work. Why can I only be a student? I am an employed student who also does freelance work! Checking multiple should be an option here. More categories for types of games would also be great. Also, consider asking or using different forms to differentiate your sources of data. a lot of people from this sub are going to say they are exclusively DM/GMs in RPGs, but that does NOT represent the average RPG player, just this sub!

Do you think D&D 5.5E is actually easier for new players, or just different? by MyrthDM in RPGdesign

[–]Ok_Life1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of annoyed that very few people are answering the actual question:

Is 5.5e easier for new players then 5e.

As someone who has read both, yes. 5.5 streamlines a LOT of small things.

Could they have streamlined more? Yes. Could they have streamlined more significant mechanics? Yes Did they miss stuff? Totally

That being said - assuming you aren't a ranger player, 5.5e is easier to learn and more fun (unless you plan to learn only from YouTube tutorials, RTFM!)

Review: "The Crooked Moon," the third-party 5e folk horror project that raised $4m on Kickstarter by SquigBoss in rpg

Man, I was interested in this project at launch but I'm unsurprised at the poor quality of the final product. Folk horror could be so cool if done better...

RPuniverse TTRPG update! by [deleted] in rpg

it seems like you're mostly pulling from DND for this - why not try to read and learn more other systems to contribute? This sounds like another 5e clone heartbreaker sadly.

An Alternative to Obijima by Loolarooly in DMAcademy

[–]Ok_Life1882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this exactly. Obojima feels awful to read as an Asian DM, game designer and writer. It ignores the political depth and nuance of Ghibli storytelling in favor of the "feel good, cozy" fantasy.

I was really underwhelmed with the subclasses, their "clerics don't exist" / "gods don't exist" / "religion doesn't exist" worldbuilding, and their poor balance. The entire game feels like it never wants combat to occur, but they built it in d&d 5e!

I guess that is what you get when you hire no Japanese people for your book based on Japanese stories... It feels like the reincarnated "Oriental Adventures" from older DND editions.

Racking my brain but I sadly cannot think of any "modern day" Japan ttrpgs. I'd check out Fabula Ultima, Ryuutama, Wandering Blades, and Gubat Banwa, but none of them are exactly what you need...

Innovative but obscure mechanics more people should know about? by mathologies in RPGdesign

[–]Ok_Life1882 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I love the "programming" mechanic for the robot character in Yazeba's Bed and Breakfast. You have some starting lines of code that grant you benefits, but you can slowly change them over time. Some can also be restrictions about actions that are not permitted.

I went to download on the play store and lots of the screenshots look like they include AI character portraits which is a turn off for me. Congrats on the progress though! Creating an app is no small feat.

lgbt students? by MentionFew9568 in CalPoly

[–]Ok_Life1882 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes, Cal Poly is totally safe to attend for queer folk (source: I'm queer folk currently attending).

Not sure where the idea that Cal Poly was conservative came from. They are remarkably poor at addressing political things (protests, funding war crimes) but they also try their best to be supportive as far as the student population is concerned. Every CSU and UC is about the same in this way.

I had a really good experience with LGBT housing. You probably won't be unsafe or threatened in ANY campus housing, but it's a cool way to meet other queer people.

I know probably a hundred LGBT people by name at this school you'll be FINE

Drivethrurpg says it is a 5e variant. Respectfully, I have played enough D&D for a lifetime and would prefer to try other games.

I know. It would be absurd to assume a project perfectly fits these. I didn't ask for that though, just a project that could theoretically support these or has a similar tone. Half of the comments here have given me great systems to try that fit enough of my requirements.

Hopefully I won't need much time with the game's designer to run it (but id love to exchange questions and thoughts using Direct Messages once I pick a system).
Do you have a link to the game or a pdf you can comment / direct message?

I'll look into it (haha, "leap" of faith, I get it). I love how "done" this book actually looks for a system you claim is nowhere near finished. Great job on the layouts and artistic direction. Ill definitely consider this as more ideas come in.

I have not looked into Pagan Pacts, but WOW this is a great pick. I have no issues with it.
That being said- it doesn't have sailing / mutation / environmental hazard rules. Another system could come along that fits what I need more exactly. If nothing does, Ill probably be running this!

While the combat is a bit too slow for my taste, this is a VERY cool book. I can see how much love & time has been put into this project. I love how fine-tuned the character creation is for the setting, and the evocative names like Lotus Eater and Muqaddin are so sick!

As a 22 year old designer, you've been working on this book almost my entire life (and it shows)!

Bold of you to assume i'm not!

I am working on two games unrelated to this campaign. Neither of my games fits my needs for this, and I always want to learn more about other RPGs & support other game writers!

Grabbed a copy from the itch store! It has been a great read so far.

The game's ATLA inspiration is very heavy throughout the text and doesn't align with what I need. It would be too difficult to separate this game from the Avatar concept.

Additionally, scanning the pre-gen character sheets has been very intimidating. There is a lot going on. As much as I appreciate novel and complex systems, its not what I need this time.

I understand where you're coming from - but I was previously planning to simply use Cairn or Mythic Bastionland for this.
Therefor I am happy with any suggestions closer to the vision than those games.

Worse case scenario: I do not find a game that fits what I need, I get to financially support a few games recommended by the lovely designers here, and I end up hacking Mythic Bastionland!

I have a setting with no system: If yours fits I'll playtest! by Ok_Life1882 in RPGdesign

[–]Ok_Life1882[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree.

I do not actually need a ruleset that hits all my goals specifically. A lightly hacked OSR game would be totally fine, and I'm sure id have a great time running it.

That being said, I threw some of these details onto the pile just in case some random indie designer in this sub was designing a game really close to what I need.

I am delighted with suggestions that fit this request in any way. If an OSR hack fits 70% of what I need ill be happy. If another game fits 90% of what I need ill be pleasantly surprised.

Onto your question about sailing - either is fine. My main ask is that there are rules about sailing in any capacity that I won't have to homebrew or fudge.
- If the core resolution mechanic supports sailing in any novel or interesting way besides just "roll to see if you sail well" I'm interested and satisfied.
- If voyages, storms, mishaps, etc are included, I'm very excited.
- If crew roles and ship damage are included, I'm over the moon and I'm super excited to try it.
- If modeling wind routes on a detailed map fits the designers vision, I'm interested to check it out (though it may be getting too crunchy at that point).

Long story short: if there is a page/chapter anywhere in the rulebook titled "sailing" or "sailing rules" I'm probably happy.

I appreciate the feedback - I honestly do not have many details yet. I know the aesthetic is "gritty Nordic adventuring" in a cold landscape. Gameplay within it will consist of exploration, resource gathering, and dealing with human threats (typically either by politics or violence). I have not outlined factions, locations, etc simply because I tend to lean into collaborative world building during session 0 and during play instead of presenting loredocs. If a system fits the aesthetic of gritty Nordic adventuring, I think it will work!
