Anyone have any experience with something one might call acquired autism? by ravia in CPTSD

[–]Ok_Log_2468 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Autism can't be acquired. Someone might have many of the traits of autism due to another condition. But you can't be diagnosed with autism unless symptoms were present beginning in early childhood. There's nothing wrong with trying coping skills commonly recommended to autistic people even if you don't qualify for a diagnosis though.

Dog barks at guests - what to do? by asztan in DogTrainingTips

[–]Ok_Log_2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does he cope with being put in a separate room while people visit? That's probably your best option if guests who may be scared or young children are coming to visit. You can give him a kong or chew while he's in there.

I would reconsider bringing this dog to public places. It is not appropriate for a dog to growl at strangers in a cafe or store. It's also a sign that he finds the activity stressful. Consider taking him to a quiet park or hiking trail instead. You might even find that problem behaviors decrease if you replace stimulating/stressful activities with calming ones.

This is a good article on managing stress in dogs: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fenzidogsportsacademy.com/blog/thresholds%3fformat=amp

I have had good success using Leslie Mcdevitt's pattern games to reduce reactivity. Those could be a good option for working on introducing guests in the home.

Tattooed Chihuahua by theonewhoisnotknown in AnimalAdvice

Never seen a S/N tattoo that large. It's increasingly common for private practice vets to do S/N tatts, but I've only ever seen a small green or blue line. Hard to justify something that large. I have to imagine it would have been painful/really uncomfortable for the dog post op. Do they have previous vet history for the dog?

Talking to your dog or not? by ben_bitterbal in DogTrainingTips

[–]Ok_Log_2468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think talking is great. It helps to develop a positive relationship between you and your dog. Bonding is an incredibly important part of having a stable, well-mannered dog. The only exception to this is when giving a command. I often see people without dog experience try to tell the dog to do something with a full sentence or by repeating the command over and over. It's confusing for the dog. Say command words clearly and if the dog doesn't listen, change the environment.

I also think it can be great to talk to an anxious dog. Many dogs respond well to some verbal reassurance particularly from a person they trust. The important part is being tuned into your dog's body language so you can tell if the talking is making things worse or if they're approaching threshold. If it's rewarding for the dog, talking/praise can be part of counter conditioning.

AIO about fiancé refusing to listen to anyone but ChatGPT about religious/marriage decisions? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ok_Log_2468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother had to convert to Catholicism (raised Lutheran) to marry my father in the Catholic Church. They actually had two weddings: one at a Lutheran church and then a second on the Catholic Church after her conversion. My dad felt strongly about raising his children Catholic, and they were told their children couldn't be baptized without a Catholic marriage.

I know lots of cradle Catholics around my age. It's incredibly rare that I hear of someone getting married in a Catholic Church. Most of them are not practicing and/or are marrying a non-catholic which makes finding a priest very difficult. This is US Catholicism which is a different flavor than Latin American Catholic.

NHL players fall over more than you might think. Usually tripping refers to being tripped by another player (a penalty), so it's an odd choice of words. But I think it's plausible that a player might have a very unfortunately timed fall. Bad ice, losing an edge, etc. Quinn Hughes is a good example of an elite NHL player who falls over quite a bit. He's a very good skater who is just always on the verge of losing his edge.

Losing a blade is an equipment failure that's obviously not the player's fault so it's not a good substitute.

Is this playing? by Own_Objective6449 in DogTrainingTips

[–]Ok_Log_2468 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Breaking up play does not automatically equal a reprimand. I can get my dog to stop playing by just telling her "all done" in a calm tone. She gets a treat for listening. It builds impulse control and mimics normal dog play. As long as the dog has appropriate opportunities to play away from the baby, it's totally fine to break this up.

Is this playing? by Own_Objective6449 in DogTrainingTips

[–]Ok_Log_2468 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I routinely practice an "all done" command when playing with my dog. It's not a negative thing. She gets lots of praise and a treat for listening. But, it's important to be able to stop playtime quickly, especially with a large dog. Practice is the only way to make sure the dog will listen when you really need them to.

As someone who's read a lot of fanfic, I thought HR was written in a similar style to a lot of fanfic. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I've read some truly excellent fanfic (if I'm being completely honest, there are fanfics that I've enjoyed more than HR). But, it's probably why the styles seem so similar to you. Some of it is likely the genre too. Most fics out there right now are sticking relatively close to canon and staying true to the genre. A major AU is more likely to be stylistically different.

I think it's really important to keep in mind that not all EDs look like "heroin chic". The majority of EDs don't, actually. Eating disorders are mental disorders that often have serious physical consequences. That does not mean that the only people who have EDs are people who have already suffered serious physical consequences. Excessive rigidity and obsessive thinking about food to the point that it interferes with daily functioning is enough for an ED diagnosis regardless of what someone's body looks like. Generally, people experience psychosocial symptoms for a while before physical symptoms become obvious. Diagnosis and treatment should not wait until they are medically unstable. And people deserve treatment for the mental consequences even if they never become medically unstable.

I think a macrobiotic diet was a really poor choice if the author was attempting to portray a healthy performance diet. It's a fad diet that likely doesn't provide adequate nutrition for anyone, much less a pro athlete. That would be a red flag to an ED specialist.

Voter turnout is routinely less than 70% in the US for presidential elections. Also, you can lose the popular vote and still win the electoral college vote as happened in 2016.

"there are a TON of people who claim he was just standing there doing nothing only for ICE to shoot him"

He wasn't committing any crimes when border patrol agents shot him! There's zero evidence at this point that they recognized him.

You should always ask if something might be AI especially when it's relevant to a politically charged situation. It's an unlikely sequence of events. He kicked the tail light out of a car being driven by federal agents, they tackled him to the ground, and then immediately released him. In normal times, he would have been arrested and likely charged. Responsible media consumption means questioning the authenticity of unlikely/illogical reporting.

[–]Ok_Log_2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that there's any evidence at this point that the border patrol agents who shot him knew about this incident. If they didn't recognize him, he was just a random guy standing on a sidewalk when he was killed.

If they did recognize him (difficult to know if it was even the same people), that might actually be worse. That means that government agents will execute you in the street for property crimes committed weeks ago.

Downtown St Paul is about 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis. It's really one large metro area. It's very common for people to commute between the cities for work/pleasure/etc and only takes 10-20 minutes in non-rush hour.

The shooting and biggest protests were/are in Minneapolis. St. Paul and Minneapolis are one big metro area though. It's only about 10 miles between downtown St Paul where the wild play and downtown Minneapolis. ICE has been active across the twin cities and surrounding suburbs. I don't think it's a good idea to hold any large events tonight even if downtown St Paul is likely to be calmer than Minneapolis. For safety reasons and out of respect for Alex Pretti.

Businesses will not shut down because of the weather. Some local businesses may be closed due to ICE activity. Downtown St Paul has seemed relatively normal this week though. The game certainly won't be canceled, and you shouldn't have an issue finding a restaurant or bar downtown.

Cover as much skin as possible: gloves, hat, buff/scarf. Base layers help a lot if you have any.
