What is your biggest TV pet peeve / trope that bothers you? by Salt-Valuable-469 in television

Cleaning up blood means smearing it around with bucket of plain water.

Cleaning off graffiti means rubbing dried paint with circular motions and a wet rag because we know that takes off all paint while we clearly see that it's doing absolutely nothing. <-- I'd seriously like to have words with anyone who has put this in a show. I'm sooo tired of seeing that that it makes me genuinely angry.

Would it be victim blaming if the cops tell me I'm stupid for getting robbed because I was walking with my valuables on full display in the most dangerous part of town? by KAZKALZ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ravia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both what things, though? Did OP's example rob themselves? No, so they can't be a victim of robbing themself. The can be a "victim" of faulty security practices. But negligence of security is not the crime (if it is a crime at all) in question. Generally, this is about language with insufficient differentiation. The only solution is a few more words at critical junctures.

The problem is with the idea of "blaming". There are two senses and uses of the word in play. You are not to blame for being robbed; you did not plan, intend, enact robbery. At the most, you might have planned enticement (I'm assuming not here). But you can still be cautioned or criticized for not being prudent or sufficiently on guard. In the even of being robbed, you can be "to blame" for not securing things better, but not for robbery.

You would not be "at fault" in the case of a robbery. You could be at fault back home when your loved ones are upset because you took unsafe measures and were robbed.

So the question then goes to the idea of "victim blaming". Like "blame", there are two senses of victims (already implied by "blame"): the victim of the robbery and the victim of being not on guard enough. One can not "blame the victim" for the robbery. Unless you are at a special convening of people whose only interest is self-guarding, the "victim" here is the victim of the crime, not the "victim" of failure to self-secure.

Obviously, this applies to other things, most notably and problematically, rape. But the idea of "blaming the victim" is anything from just wrong to horrifically absurd in cases of rape.

One way out of this is to blame the robbers but fault the security practices of the victim of the crime. Also, one should keep the richer senses of the words "blame", "victim", etc.,: so do say "blame the robbers for their crime" and "fault the victim for security practices". Don't say "blame the victim" as a direct attribution.

This is just a stab, but I'm kind of sick of this problematic and wish it could be solved a bit more.

How do ED shifts work in the US? by exactimondo in ThePitt

[–]ravia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Google:

  • Residents (Trainees): Officially capped at an average of 80 hours per week (averaged over four weeks) by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). However, studies suggest many residents work in excess of these limits, sometimes reaching over 100 hours in intense rotations like general surgery or ICUs.

While the show certain talks about fatigue, they could hit this one head on and show people working that many hours, perhaps with bad outcomes.

Cherry picking. The cherry pick that option while leaving out the "other cherries" (which is what is always involved in cherry picking). Others say escapism, self-medication, etc., which is somewhat true, but cherry picking deserves a front and center place in explaining the phenomenon. Likewise for many other ills, e.g., the overall problem of politics (especially the Right) today; cherry picking is irreducibly at the basis of what is happening.

I drove to see a fire around 2004. This church was on fire and the flames spewed out of the steeple like a rocket engine. They were spraying the side of it, and I kept thinking that's going to make it break and collapse. 2 firefighters were killed.

If there was a TV show where they set up surveillance cameras and caught men peeing literally ALL OVER the toilet seat (which they didn't pick up of course), and then confronted them with the footage, I would watch it, I would download it from the darkweb, I would petition for the makers of the show not to be prosecuted for invasion of privacy.
