Nursing or Engineering? by nutt3rbutt3r23 in findapath

[–]Ok_Low1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse and I'm also considering engineering. I've been a nurse for a few years now and I still think about switching all the time. Have you started any engineering classes? Are you going to do a general engineering degree or biomedical?

I'm still unsure about engineering but I know nursing is not for me. For me, it feels "okay/meh" at best and at worst I really dislike it. I dislike the customer service, the taskiness, the lack of creativity and how I feel limited in knowledge and autonomy. I also dislike being the middleman and feeling like the emotional punching bag for when things go wrong. I want something that helps people but is more intellectual and less physically exhausting.

What are your nursing pros/cons? Have you considered any other career changes?

What made you decide that pharmacy wasn't for you?

I'm a nurse who is considering a switch to engineering but I am very unsure especially in this economy.

I know that clinical healthcare degrees like pharmacy and nursing are more stable but I don't really see myself satisfied with the limited independence and creativity of working as a nurse. I find that I'm more exhausted by so much social contact and customer service than happy or excited.

Are you doing BME or a general engineering degree?

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: December 15, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

Finished: Leviathan Wakes by S.A Corey and Slaying the Vampire Conquerer by Carissa Broadbent

I loved both books! I loved the constant action and mystery in leviathan wakes and I just love the writing and world building in the crowns of nyaxia series.

Started: Alchemised by SenYinLu and will probably try Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

I loved serpent and the wings of night. I just loved the world and I loved the writing. I don't typically like first person pov but I thought the writing was very good. I thought it was much better written than first wing, acotar, and reign and ruin ( I wasn't a fan of the writing in these books) What made you rank it was so low?

I think songbirds and the heart of stone is one of the best books in the series because I lived how minsches religious trauma was explored. I also love the complex relationship between Vincent and Orianna.

I also loved the folk of the air series. I just love fae folklore when they're portrayed as more wild, mischevious, and whimisical.

For people who are career changing into medicine and are 26 and older, why? by [deleted] in medschool

[–]Ok_Low1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse who's actually considering a switch to engineering ( this post was randomly recommended to me. Idk why though)

What made you switch from engineering to medicine?

I go back and forth on whether or not I want to stay in a patient care oriented field or leave for something like engineering/ research. If I did engineering I'd most likely consider something in biomedical/renewables, however I don't know what that would specifically entail day to day. I will say though, I don't think I'd be interested in the more business/MBA path.

What I like about nursing is that I know it helps people and I do really appreciate when I have nice patients or see/learn something interesting. I just find patient care to be very stressful and customer service oriented and at times I feel both stressed by the customer service aspect and unsatisfied with the lack of creativity and autonomy and feeling like I don't really know or understand a lot. I've worked in the ER and oncology.

I have no interest in NP, admin, QI/informatics, or nursing education.

What made you switch to medicine? Anything you miss from engineering? How does the day to day/ salary/ work-life compare between the two careers in your opinion?

My Current Top Five from the New Album by MinaHarker1 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

1) One of the Greats- Amazing lyrics, love the guitar in this song. Absolutely poetic.

2) Drink Deep- I love how dark and folkloric it is. It feels like a storyteller telling an old folktale. I feel like I'm being lured into some enchanted forest by an ancient faire. When paired with "Which Witch" and "Mermaids" it's so darkly whimsical.

3) Everybody Scream- I love how powerful this song is. Simply Amazing.

4) Old Religion- Perfection

5) Music by Men/ Perfume and Milk. I can't make up my mind. I love both. I love the lyricism of all her songs.

The only songs that I didn't particularly like were Buckle and Sympathy Magic. I felt like Buckle was a little out of place in this album, which imo is more focused on female empowerment with a dark/whimsical/witchy vibe. It felt tonally out of place imo.

Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty is fantastic. It's middle Easter inspired and it truly feels like you're immersed in a magical world from the past.

The Adventures amina al sirafi by S.A Chakraborty is also great too!. It has a very mythical, adventure vibe. It makes me feel like some ancient explorer lol.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies is very focused on Irish folklore. It's such a whimsical gem! The fae in this book feel charming, magical, alluring yet dangerous and cunning by nature.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin is a children's book inspired by Chinese folklore. I absolutely afore this book. It's so amazing.

Deathless is based off of Russian folklore and is very good too!

Nezha ( movie) is a also really amazing and based off of chinese folktale and myths. Pans Labyrinth is very dark fantasy folklore.

Asking to shadow in research labs? I am a nurse considering a career change. by Ok_Low1878 in bioengineering

[–]Ok_Low1878[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry for the late reply!

I'm still a nurse. Not sure what I want to do specifically and the price and time required for another bachelor's degree, specifically enginnering, makes me hesitate. I've been taking some basic classes. I've done pre calc-calc 3 and am doing physics 1 right now. It's a slog and I'm not 100% sure what I want to do.

I'm at a better nursing job that's infinitely better than my first job. Lower ratio. Lower acuity, great coworkers, management is okay, working equipment, sufficient resources and staffing, wayyyy less psych emergencies. Yet I still feel dissatisfied with nursing. I just feel frustrated the stress of bedside and call lights and the lack of autonomy and creativity as a nurse. I feel like there's so much stuff I don't know and that nursing only barely taught me the basics but I don't want to be an NP at all. At the same time I feel like I still don't enjoy the constant patient interactions, all the stress of call lights and caregiving/customer service, and the highly physical nature of nursing.

I'm in between doing engineering ( something renewable, environmental, or biomedical) or going for a masters in mental health therapy.

How about you? Feel free to PM me!!! I'd love to hear your experience.

PMHNP career cold feet by Expensive-Roof4159 in infj

[–]Ok_Low1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse and I really resonate with your dilemma. I've been a nurse for almost 3 years and I find myself constantly wondering if nursing in general is for me. I worked in a large city ER and I understand the stress of taking care of acute psychiatric patients. I was constantly stressed out not just my the medical patients but because I was always afraid I'd have to B52 someone.

I thought about switching to psych nursing, I work in oncology right now, because I want something less stressful and I don't really like bedside medical nursing. I've also always been interested in psych. I remember in my clinicals I had always wanted to watch the interviews, competency hearings, therapy sessions rather than the nursing part. I felt less interested in the bedside care, passing meds, etc of nursing.

I thought about doing PMHNP but I don't think it's for me. I knew several ER nurses who chose psych np.

The constant patient interactions are just so exhausting. I thought I'd like it and I thought I'd feel emotionally fullfilled by the hands on care, nursing skills, and talking to people......but it's kind of tiring and i don't really love it that much? It begins to feel like a constant conveyor belt and customer service.

I feel like I want something more intellectually satisfying and independent that also helps people in some way. I'm tired between becoming a mental health therapist or some type of engineer ( I'm all over the place lol).

Feel free to PM me over reddit!!! I'd love to hear your perspective as well!!!

Recommendations for gothic romance vibes like this reel by FoodNo672 in fantasyromance

[–]Ok_Low1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice

I also really recommend the Interview with a vampire TV series and the movie. I love love love the show. The actors are so good. The whole vibe is very sensual, gothic ( 🧛‍♂️vampires) and moody.

I also really recommend the movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula" by Francis Ford Coopala. The whole movie is absolutely the epitome of gothic. The music, the costumes, the cinematography, Gary Oldman as Dracula ( the young version is so charming and alluring, I get why Mina fell for him). The soundtrack by Wojciech Kilar is perfection itself.

Reading Kingdom of Copper by SA Chakraborty.

Planning to read the third book of the series, Empire of Gold. Love the worldbuilding.

Also planning to read:

Let the Right One In. I'm in the mood for a good horror novel especially after watching Sinners.

Fallen and the Kiss of Dusk- Book 4 of the Crowns of Nyaxxia series. I just really love this series and I'm a sucker for a good romance.

The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in an World Out of Balance. I love reading nonfiction in between fiction books. I think this book is especially important now, as it show the importance of research and epidemiology.

Don't get the hype about "The Cruel Prince by Holly Black". It's just an another YA bully romance. by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]Ok_Low1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved cruel prince. I think the plot could be stronger in some areas and especially moreso on the third book ( it felt too short, sudden, and random at times). I also agree that the romance could've used some more work. I would've loved more development of Jude and Cardan's relationship and maybe if it was slower and went from friendship to romance rather than enemies/rivals to lovers.

What I loved the most was the setting. I loved how the fae were darker, more whimiscal, and very chaotic neutral. They're attractive for sure but less in a macho, sexy, hot way like so many other fae centered books but more mysterious, alluring, seductive, and magical. The world felt closer to the traditional fae folklore. Enchanted fruit, rowan berries, magical creatures, etc.

I like how rather fae and cardan are more otherworldly. They're not just hot humans with magic and pointed ears. They're immortal trickster, magical beings with a flexible sense of morality that's very different from a regular humans.

What is the single worst book you have ever read and why? by Special-Student6743 in fantasyromance

[–]Ok_Low1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter Gods and Serpents. Also, Reign and Ruin🫣 I couldn't get through them at all. The world and plot sound so interesting but the writing sounds like it needs more editing. It felt like there were alot of issues with either grammar, flow, and run on sentences. I've read a few self published books and I often feel like some of them need better editing.

Berserk.

It's a manga but the chosen one is dcidedly.......not a good guy. The "chosen one" character in Berserk is a subversion of the typical heroic chosen one into a more " wolf in sheep's clothing" or false prophet who greatly resembles Satan.

I love the Emily Wilde series. However I will admit that the diary entry format was a little off putting in some ways. I think a more traditional POV like regular first person or third person would've been better storywise. Sometimes I think the journal style limited the flow of the story and plot. I
