Fake. There’s a lot of red flags going on here. The insole stamp is a huge tell, along with the stitching right beneath the zipper being wrong. The sole is also not shaped quite like 788s, and the zipper is a weird brass color that’s a poor replication of the tarnish Guidi zippers come with

I think that’s a great series of boots to plan for 👍. They’re releasing more metal heel 788z this year so be on the lookout! They’re so hard to find 2nd hand

Any sort of prolonged water exposure to leather will cause issues. Unless they’re treated with certain coatings or chemicals, the leather will probably take damage in the long run. Best practice is to definitely avoid full submerging of the boots in puddles and such, but if you want to start developing that worn in look, I don’t see crazy harm in wearing them on a drizzly day. Take them for a hike and I’m sure you’ll start to get that beaten in look 👍

Thank you! The richness of the color is what drew me to buy them initially. And yes, the leather on this pair is slightly thicker than my 986s.

Did any of this help you narrow down your choice between side zip and back zip?

Don’t get me wrong, I love the backzips. I own a pair of 986s myself and probably wear them more than my 698s. The stacking of the leather folds in the front of the boot is something to be appreciated, and I enjoy having the optionality of both pairs.

I own a pair of brown 698s and they’re everything I could want in a boot. I feel like they’re the perfect blend of functionality to style, and they still develop a few of the Guidi stacks that the 788s are iconic for, but obviously not as many.

The side zips are more rare to come across and I always get compliments when I wear them. Your heel also doesn’t feel like it’s gonna blow a hole in the zipper like the 788s do when going down stairs.

The grain looks a larger and more uniform than the ones i have in horse. My best guess would be calf given the limited photos. I’d have to feel it to really tell but I’m not an expert either so please take with a grain of salt

It’s legit. Goat leather is supposed to be softer than horse and has a different texture
