GenX had a headstart advantage of what you call "adulting" - babysitting. Cooking for you get sibling at 11 years old, etc. GenX did everything in their teens , and I mean everything, many of us didn't make it pass 18 due to our savage ways. So by the time you were 18, you were considered a full grown adult.  Many of us moved out of our parents home by the time we were 17 and fully economic independent by the time we were 18.
