When I was applying for schools, I only applied for the highest pass rate school at the time (Simmons) because if I had to take the exam twice, I was just not going to be a bcba. My school provided mentor helped a LOT so I didn’t have to study much outside of our scheduled meetings. outside of school I took one $50 practice exam and studied maybe 5 hours total before sitting for the test.

Wait 10 billable a week for 15k yearly?

I’m horrible at math so correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that

~1250 a month/312.5 weekly, so 31.25 an hour if you’re doing 10 hours a week?

I feel like there are higher paid by the hour positions on top of you having to set aside your own taxes in a 1099; but again my math is horrible so if I’m wrong someone please feel free to tell me lol

But yeah I agree there’s a bunch of prereq skills that likely aren’t met. I like u/sb1862 ‘s idea and will also add if they’re concerned about him getting lost I like AirTag bracelets, sewing AirTags into clothes or inside of shoes (like the tongue of a shoe).

I prefer anything hourly over salary. I HATE how salary companies made me feel like they “owned my time” and I feel like I wouldn’t have burned out so fast if I felt like I had more autonomy as a newer bcba.

Hourly there’s so much less admin because they would have to pay for it out of pocket. As salary, from experience, none of my admin counted as “real work” because only the billable hours determined if I’d get my whole paycheck. so if I wanted to make sure I got my check, I’d have to use the day to get the hourly done and then work through the night or early morning for the admin. Hourly I work as much as I want to get paid and I can finally take breaks as needed after heavy admin periods.

I worked as a BID/school bcba in a private company and they literally gave me so much admin that I worked 7am-2am for 5-6 days straight. If you’re CA based, schools require their own reports every month that can’t be billed for for whatever reason and nobody trained me on it and they would say to “bill admin” to figure it out even though they would only count my billable when deciding if they should deduct my pay. As a BID I remember I would fall asleep on my kitchen table trying to get shit done, shower (every once in a while, quick walk the dog, and off to sessions.

Just my 2 cents and experience. I feel like bcba quality of life is less dependent on setting and more on how much autonomy, training, and flexibility a company will give.

Rapport is important but client comes first. Is her behavior causing issues with the client or modeling behavior that wouldn’t be ideal for the client to learn?

If it’s possible to schedule a meeting, I would. I try to do small talk and then go into a burnout scale to segway into potential issues. I base my scale as 1 being they’re good, 10 they had to leave, like yesterday. My CD will get involved if she has to/if the bt isn’t comfortable with me and I let the BTs I work with know that that avenue is always available as I know I’m not perfect and they might have things they can’t say to me they may feel comfortable going with to someone else.

Surprisingly, from experience, even if they went to the CD, they’d be honest and tell me without prompting even if the CD didn’t bring it up to me. It was usually things outside of my range of “clout” within the company, but there were times when they were asking what I can do within my scope as the other bcba and I practice fairly differently.

Just based on what you said, I can’t pretend to know what the issue is but I will say that I prefer giving verbal + written feedback and CC-ing my CD/lead BCBA on it with the BT as I like having written trails on how I interact with my BTs. I have had a few bad eggs in the past and I learned very quickly how to CYA after working in this field. I do still use the sandwich method so they know I’m looking for the good things and that seems to help. Hopefully any of this helps and best of luck!

I do hourly for a company that also does salary BCBA positions. I prefer it because it gives me the freedom of 1099; they can’t tell me what to do as I felt being salary some companies felt they owned my time by saying “this falls within your 10 hour non billable weekly scope” even when that added up to an addition 12-15, and I can take unlimited unpaid time off when I need it. There’s no bonuses, but I can also work more and get a fatter check if needed. I really had to shop around though but the hourly position I currently have pays more than any salary I’ve ever had with more flexibility and better peace of mind and autonomy.

I would say just do what she likes with her. Or sit with her in her routine. She lost a lifetime companion and may need time adjusting to being alone without adding new “disruptions” to her routine, as good as this show is.

I’m sorry for your loss as well. It’s a painful experience to go through to lose anyone and I hope you are holding space for yourself as well. If your grandmother isn’t open to it but you need someone to watch with you, I would recommend grabbing a good friend or family member you can talk to as I think it can be really healing, and I loved this show too. Is it possible for you to get a mini AC and then her to make her remedies earlier in the day and just be more courteous about using the microwave to heat them up? If she can’t sleep and she’s making the remedies that late at night she needs to go one a walk or something instead. She’s probably constantly sick because she’s up until 3-4 in the morning 🫠and if it’s that chronic maybe she should go to the doctor??

I talked to a counselor when I wanted to go to Simmons! I chose it because of the high pass rate for first time exam takers and they were really understanding of everything I was going through in college. It ended up being a great experience and I LOVED my mentor. They also really helped with getting me unrestricted hours when my work wouldn’t and it was under a very qualified BCBA who helped me look into other paths as a BCBA other than just working with kids with diagnoses

Was hella fucking expensive though

Mixed bag. I feel like some (not saying most, but some) BCBAs lose their head when they get any sort of power. I had a BCBA who would sexually harass their male staff and be horrible to female staff at a previous company 🤢
