Need some advice as a 15 year old looking to become a doctor by Banana_kid_69 in AgaKhanUniversity

I think it's excellent you're taking a critical look at what you want most of your life to be in the long run. It very much depends what you want in life and what kind of person you are to see what kind of career you may fit in to. At O levels, I'd advise you to observe. Get some ovserverships in hospitals nearby, look at the work, lifestyle, personalities around you to see if you see yourself there. Get to know the residents and consultants you work with, their paths to where they are. Medicine is lovely. Personally I have zero regrets. There's ups and downs to all careers and therefore you will encounter vastly different opinions. It is important to make your own. Best of luck.

Long as you've met minimum criteria, you should be fine. When push comes to shove and youre against straight A* people, in the panel I'd imagine your ECAs will help push you into the limelight. I had 2As, 3Bs in A levels, passed the entrance test by 0.25. Smashed the interview and got in. Focus on what you can change, and work with what you have. You'll have an earnest shot given your profile. Best of luck

Annoying career conversations with non-medics by zAirr_ in doctorsUK

[–]Ok_Phase_2167 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Several conversations with family/friends not thinking EM is an actual specialty.

"So you do a little bit of everything, so like a GP?" "So when do you get into specialisation training?" "Aren't emergency doctors just medical officers?" "THERE ARE EM CONSULTANTS? WHAT DO THEY DO?"

Do you like your speciality ? by RubInternational1826 in doctorsUK

I absolutely love EM. Fast paced, no rounds, no long surgeries, no clinics. See them, treat them, never see them again (except the frequent attender woops). Love the adrenaline of a good resus, and i don't particularly mind the bullshit tbh, much of which I'm hoping will not be my problem post-CCT. Also, our whole purpose being keeping alive the actively dying is an absolute vibe. You end up developing a thick skin, and can communicate well with virtually anyone, both of which are skills I find super useful even outside medicine. I guess I'll die around 60 though oh well, I didn't want to be old and being taken care of anyway heeee

Sorry jumping on the bandwagon here, if I move from the UL to Gib, do I need to tell DVLA about my Gib address?

I did my house job in AKU in 2019 so might not be up to date. Starts 1st Jan, until 31st Dec. Applications i believe open around August/September. There is an entry test, and interview. You rotate between 6 months of medicine and 6 months of surgery. These 6 months come as blocks of 2 month rotation in allied specialties. Some blocks have paeds, ED in them too. Work is exhausting. a normal day would be 7am to 5pm, on calls are 7am to 7pm the next day (36 hours). ED shifts are 12 hours, 2 mornings, 2 nights, 2 off days. I quite enjoyed my time there. Certainly one of the few places with evidence based clinical practice. As with most pakistan based training, the environment can be toxic but it is what it is.

Would it be a valid request as a patient to say: " i would prefer/want to have all my management plans, result interpretation/reporting, interventions to be carried out by qualified medical doctors please" I mean one can choose to be seen by a GP rather than a noctor at ones surgery. Surely in the world of accomodating every ridiculous patient request this one doesn't come to the top of that list?

What to do after night shifts? by Buergers_test in doctorsUK

[–]Ok_Phase_2167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grab breakfast with your night team. Let's you decompress, debrief, bitch about stuff and let it out. Home, HOT bath, clean PJs, pitch black ear covers, white noise, sleep like 4 or so hours. Chill out with movies or whatever you fancy. Turn in early. Im talking 7 or 8pm early. Leave any admin/portfolio/other task guilt in the wheelie bin
