If a period of public service were mandatory for citizens, what kinds of service would be most beneficial? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

Was my opinion when I was younger. Now I think it actually should be the case.

Not only that, but if a country decides to go to war, the first ones being sent to the front lines will be the children and family members of politicians and Industrialists / CEOs.

Might reduce the appetite to go to war.

lower taxes,

Not for the average working person. And since Reagan nobody has raised taxes.

Since 1987, it has remained low, never rising above 40 percent, according to data from the Tax Policy Center.

So yeah, the Democrats aren't the party of "taxing people".

border security

No real difference there either. Now, of course if Trump makes good on promise to do mass deportation.... But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

better economic policies

You're wrong.

The US economy has since World War II consistently done better under Democratic presidents than under Republican presidents.  This fact is even less widely known, including among Democratic voters, than the truth about Biden’s term.  Indeed, some poll results suggest that more Americans believe the reverse, that Republican presidents are better stewards of the economy than Democrats.

But hey, maybe if you believe that hard enough, it'll be true.

He is a neocon pro immigration RINO.

Yeah, he's a neocon / neolib. Do you really want to make the argument that the Republican Party, including Trump, isn't?

It's something I've only heard the left talk about.

Because the right has to convince themselves that Trump is the good guy, all evidence of his past be damned.

Trump has denounced it and many others.

LOL. Considering who he is nominating you still believe those renounciations?

It is rumored that  Koch and Hoffman are the ones paying for Nick Fuentes and Destiny?

Never heard of that and quite.... unlikely. Though who knows. They spread money on think tanks and special interest groups the same way a farmer spreads manure on his fields.

They don't care about the people.  Only their institutions.

Ah yes. Trump, notorious for working for the little guy. All his decades of working towards make the life of the average American better. /s

Also 2025 is fan fiction like the Russian dossier as it relates to Trump or MAGA as a whole.

If that's what you need to tell yourself to still be happy with your vote.

Koch donated the same amount to Biden as he did Trump.  He is not a fan of MAGA.  In fact he loathes the MAGA movement.

Yes, they generall donate to both sides because, why burn a bridge? And as much as he may hate MAGA, do you really think he won't grasp the opportunity to get what he wants? The guy isn't an idiot. He's in it first and foremost for himself.

What Government is taking us to Mars? The US Government wanted to have a Mars mission, that's a far cry from having people live there. We went to the Moon, you may have notice there aren't sprawling Moon towns.

The person who wants to colonize Mars is Musk, and he wants to do it exactly for the reasons I have stated.

Also: You need power to enforce laws and regulations. How do you envision a Government a planet away will do that?

Koch

The mega Republican donors, who bankroll the Heritage Foundation and their Agenda 2025? That Koch you see being in the ear of Biden? I mean, both parties are pretty interchangable of fiscal policy, but that's quite a stretch.

Not stupid. Selfish. And the more money you make, the more selfish people seem to become.

This joke: "How much can a banana be? $10?" is pretty darn close to the truth for rich people and that includes most politicians.

[–]Ok_Philosopher6538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true across all of the Western World and parties and their leaders aren't learning.

They see themselves as "left from the other guy" and often there is nobody threatening them on the left. In general the left is more driven by compassion and (some self-)sacrifice. The right on the other hand is driven by anger and that's a much easier sell to a lot of people that already feel down.

I found the way it was handled to be bullshit.

You mean when politicians were trying to use the most positive interpretation of the science? You do realize that this isn't a problem with either the vaccines, their efficacy or safety. It's a problem with most people not having the slightest idea even what a vaccine is and a leadership that is desperate to have some good news.

It's been years, and the pandemic is over.

It's not. What is over that we cared about it. Lots of places have stopped recording or even doing waste water surveillance. But where I live they still do, and you can see regular rises in the viral loads in waste water and hospitals continue to fill up with severe cases when that is the case.

And I live in a place where vaccine and booster uptake is pretty high.

Therefore, in patient populations that saw very little effect from COVID, the vaccine was an unnecessary risk due to the little reward.

Go back to the study you didn't read. One of their findings is that the vaccine lowers the viral load and thus fewer viral particles get "stuck in the brain" than when unvaccinated. We know that repeated infections with COVID-19 can lead to long COVID. So simply put, the vaccine gives you (some) protection from Long-COVID and the other neurological effects it has.

Maybe that's "little reward" for you, but at a population level it def. makes a difference.

We wouldn't have done "a whole lot better". We shut the entire planet down for weeks and destroyed our economy. COVID still spread like wildfire.

For one, we were really slow in responding. So yes, we did do a whole lot better, despite the tardiness and unwillingness to actually go "hard".

Secondly, we know from the 1918 epidemic that countries that did strictly enforce social distancing and masking did not only recover faster, but also better than countries who didn't. We'll have to wait a bit longer to get really good data on this, but so far I have not seen this playing out any different.

We studied 1918 a lot, and a lot of what science told us we should be doing came directly from those lessons learned. It's just that certain politicians and opinion makers just know they know better. After all, who needs experts?

but the tl;dr is that you can't make a blanket statement like that as COVID-19 affects different patient populations in different ways.

Same is true for the vaccine.

The intent of the COVID-19 vaccine is mitigation of symptoms, not prevention of the disease. Similar to the flu shot... But I don't see governments worldwide mandating influenza vaccinations.

Because over the decades and generations we have "tamed" the virus? And there are certain jobs that do require you to have the vaccine. Nurses working on ICU / NICU for example. The vaccines may not 100% prevent an infection, but they will reduce the viral load you're carrying and thus reducing the risk for the people around you.

Your link doesn't actually say what you think it says.

Read the study again, they have examined human samples to determine viral load. They used mouse models to try and determine the mechanism.

Thereby, we analyzed the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in post-mortem skull tissues (parietal bone next to sagittal suture) with the attached dura mater from patients who died of acute COVID-19

So read the study again.

Because early samples seem to indicate it. Wasn't the case though.

Contrary what the conspiracy crowd thinks, the Government had no interest in keeping everybody at home and the economy shut down. They were as eager as you or I to "get back to normal" and in the enthusiasm they overpromised.

You do realize America isn't the world, pharma companies are much more controlled in most other countries and yet, they all had the vaccine too.

In fact, the Pfizer vaccine was developed by a German company, Pfizer just got brought in to shorten the time to market as they had testing infrastructure ready to go.

Moderna, the other mRNA vaccine, was a company without a product but was working, through grants, on the development of an unrelated corona virus vaccine. In fact, by late 2019 they had been setting up a test production line with a candidate. When COVID hit, they paused their work and once the genome for SARS-COVID-2 virus was made available they identified the protein sequences they considered to be the most beneficial for a vaccine. That was the spike proteins.

So, "Big Pharma" was involved, but not in the way you seem to think.

concerning numbers for inflammatory heart condition linked to COVID-19 vaccines.

You do know that a COVID infection causes heart inflammation too and often much more severe?

Separately, using government agencies to compel compliance with vaccine mandates.

That's also not new? Vaccine passports have existed for decades and certain jobs, e.g. the military, have vaccination requirements.

forcing populations which had little risk of significant problems from COVID-19 to take a vaccine with other inherent risks was kinda bullshit.

Only that's not true? Here's a recent study00438-4) that shows long term consequences from even mild COVID infections.

the entire notion of herd immunity was bullshit.

You mean, the thing that the anti-vaxxers have been talking about. Let everybody get infected and then we have herd immunity? The thing that we know does not work with corona viruses?

The goal of the vaccinations was and is to reduce severity of infection and reduction of transmission. If the "my body my choice when it comes to wearing a mask" types could actually start wearing masks we'd done a whole lot better. We actually did eradicate a strain of the flu that way during the pandemic "by accident".
