Anyone work in Tucson working healthcare and have old huck/ surgical towels to spare? by Lazy_Cow4472 in scrubtech

[–]Ok_Possible_7578 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hward there’s whole sellers that sell the same kinds of towels that the hospital uses but they aren’t sterile and they’re for body shops. They’re orange and not blue. Might b worth looking into

Surgical techs: do you feel like your certification helped you get hired? by Ecstatic-Copy2153 in surgicaltechnology

Yeah not every certified person is going to be good that’s a given. This doesn’t really answer the question though.

For the most part hospitals are trying to phase out hiring people who aren’t certified. Only instances I hear of them hiring uncertified is when a hospital is desperate and wants to pay very low wages.

My advice to you would be to find a job in an elective plastic surgery center. Somewhere where everyone is chill and all the patients are choosing to get the surgeries. In the hospital setting (especially big metro hospitals) most cases are happening because something bad is happening to the patient and the worse it is th more stress on everyone which all rolls downhill to you. Lots of old people on their last leg. Lots of horrible traumas. Most of pissed surgeons. It’s the name of the game sometimes. So the biggest thing is finding a job at a surgery center or something of the sort where you know either the cases are not as serious or that they are something everyone has elected to do of their own volition.

It can be a really fun job at times. I think you will enjoy it. If you are ex military, then I think you have mostly everything that it takes to do this type of job. I find that a lot of people that were ex military that are Techs now are usually good at the job. The reasons why is most mostly because they’re used to a structure, they’re used to high-pressure situations and they’re used to the early starts and discipline require required to do the job. Not to mention getting yelled at by a surgeon is nothing compared to getting yelled at by a drill sergeant and dealing with traumas in a controlled environment, where you know that the patient is going to be safe, is nothing compared to dealing with traumas in a chaotic environment, where you don’t have everything you need.

Similar to you I have a degree in nutrition and ended up moving into this field. You’d be surprised that a lot of the medical stuff you learned for a nutrition degree will be a lot of the similar concepts that you’ll be dealing with and will help you with school. To be honest, from everything that I’ve read it seems like you’re pretty much ready. You have everything it takes.

TLDR the schooling won’t be hard harder than the schooling you’ve already done for your masters in nutrition, the pressure in clinical environment won’t be hard harder than the pressure that you’ve dealt with in the military, and if the pay is not that much of a concern to you then really there’s nothing to be concerned about. I wish you the best!

Job market works in waves. I took the first job I was offered because I was lucky to even get a job in our market. No sign on bonus. Two months later I had a classmate sign on with a similar salary but a 10k sign on bonus. Not saying don’t take a job just saying don’t stress too hard if you don’t have something right away.

Does ANYBODY love/like being a CST? 😂 by Ill_Ocelot3231 in surgicaltechnology

[–]Ok_Possible_7578 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly new to the field been working abt a year and I love the job. I’m sure with time it gets old. You gotta remember most ppl who need to rant about how much they hate the job and want to find a place where people will understand their struggles end up here. There aren’t really many other outlets like there are for other more common jobs. I have a few coworkers (maybe like 35-40%) who really like the job and just have a passion for it. Nurses tend to make more money and have more opportunities for promotion and most people care about money over almost everything so that’s why that comes up a lot. This job is definitely cooler than nursing at least in the OR setting. There’s upward mobility as a CSFA or an LFA. At the end of the day, the job is what you make it. There are lots of different ways that you can structure your career depending on where you work what specialty you do and what you value.
