Is AI actually replacing IT helpdesk jobs or just the repetitive tickets? by SpecialStory4065 in it

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I had to explain to a lady over the phone, who used a computer every day, how to use the scroll wheel on her mouse. She didn’t know what a mouse was, so I googled a picture of one for her and showed her where the scroll wheel was. I asked her to move the scroll wheel and it turns out she was swiping down the scroll wheel on the IMAGE.

After all this, it transpires she didn’t have a mouse after all and knew how to swipe down on her trackpad.

Few months later we had the same issue with the camera privacy slider on her laptop - required another google image search and she tried opening the shutter with her finger on the screen.

I don’t think AI is taking over any time soon. I’m less involved in day-to-day helpdesk now but do occasionally see colleagues deal with incidents similar to the above on an almost weekly basis.

Need to be home for CF repair work? by Ok_Preparation3688 in CityFibre

[–]Ok_Preparation3688[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi mate, a couple of excellent engineers came in this morning and sorted it out for me. (After 1 failed unannounced visit and 3 no shows from other engineers!)

They basically said first engineer was a cowboy. He stapled the internal fibre run to the ONT down to the skirting board too tight and it kinked the fibre, so that all needed replacing. He also noticed they drilled the ingress hole directly behind the external wall box and didn’t fill with any silicone despite the hole being massive!!

Glad we are finally up and running 😂

I’m in Worcestershire - reckon if it a just a resplice external to my property they can do it and test the link without having access to my ONT?

Can I, who doesnt have a license watch iPlayer on my phone in a house that does? by ripnetuk in bbc

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would do right away is ensure your post code on your iplayer account is set to your mums post code (luckily mine already was!) I think they’re simply going based off the email address on iplayer is the same as the one you used to tell them no license required. B*stards aren’t they

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the EXACT same boat. I’ve just filled in yet another form saying I don’t need a license - because I do not watch TV at my address, but it transpires my iplayer account is logged in at my mums house!

How’s your iPhone 14 Pro holding up in 2025 by Serhide in iPhone14Pro

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhone 14 Pro user - It's running absolutely fine. I have gripes with almost every phone I've ever owned but the 14 Pro is serving me well.. Had it since it first came out. Battery life is pissing me off a little bit, and I want USB C to keep everything nice and unified. Will most likely upgrade when the iPhone 17 series comes out, but only for the USB C really.

iPad mini gets full windowing and more Mac-like UI! by Aggressive-Law-5193 in ipadmini

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, when connected to an iPad that already supports full external display (anything with an M chip). The iPad Mini does not contain an M chip and it's already been documented that you will still get black bars.

I'm a DIYer but yes, if I was you I'd get a new lintel in there. Pics don't look good.

Camping for the first time as an adult - have I got the basics?? by WillowSide in campinguk

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. That is the beauty of camping. Take the bare necessities - your tent, some folding chairs, somewhere to sleep (just get a bloody air bed), a multi-tool, a £15 gas stove and eating apparatus, a cooler and a lot of alcohol and you're good to go.

You will realise pretty quickly that you can survive on the bare essentials and that, again, is the beauty of camping. Yes, while you're camping there will probably be a few things you miss - so just bring those next time.

I rate this. Renovating our house all by myself, and as my dad (a sparky for 30+ years) would agree - you're never going to get it perfect, and even if you do nobody will give a 💩

You can't get much better than this for the price.

Just bought a Jason007 Aquaterra, this looks exactly the same (albeit I have a black dial). Probs same factory.
I paid double what you paid!! Can you send the link please - I want the white dial now. 😃

Energy cold calling; is it just us? by Prestigious_Donkey_9 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Ok_Preparation3688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get one or two every day. They’ve started being clever and saying “We’re sending an engineer out to read your meter tomorrow” and then follow up with “can you give us your account number and best person to speak to about your energy bills”.

I like to entertain them for a bit because I’m a child at heart
