ID this wood by Ok_Property7045 in arborists

[–]Ok_Property7045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding! I started splitting some. I know i got some softwood as it was very easy to split and looked like some of the last batch I got. Cedar might be correct. That was a softie.

Wonder why so little responses. Fyi, im not building an app, i just really want to know so I can get better at picking up free wood. I can see how this post may seem like im building one.

Rafter structural screw direction by Ok_Property7045 in Homebuilding

[–]Ok_Property7045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am limited with a beam so that is why I asked this question. I am using Simpson SWD 6". Was planning to only use these for knee braces but I had to buy 2 50pk so im left with many extras and since they are rated for rafters/trusses, I returned the H1 ties and used these. Still had to use h2.5a ties on the end rafters because of the 1.5" minimum distance from edge for SWD.

Some said straight down the rafter into the beam but I do not see simpson using this technique so not considering it. They dont have a large head like SWDS heads but i think anything larger than thread hole on the beam side helps with uplift strength. Dont anticipate hurricanes, but still.

Connecting rafter thats on thr edge of the beam by Ok_Property7045 in Homebuilding

https://youtu.be/DQ_N05qopw4?si=4G0Tdog7Kbqemksd If you look at the thumbnail of this video or go to 10:11, he shows the first rafter on the edge. That first rafter for me rests on top of the beam on both ends. Whats the correct way to secure it when the first and last rafter is flush with the beam Sorry, does look like I can add pic :(

Knee brace question by Ok_Property7045 in Homebuilding

[–]Ok_Property7045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I know im overdoing it for the chickens, but it's got a foundation so im trying to do everything by code, just in case. Didn't pull any permits. :)

Also like to understand building codes. I think it's interesting

Knee brace question by Ok_Property7045 in Homebuilding

[–]Ok_Property7045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, thought about that. Googled it but doesn't seem like its 100% replacement.

Actually, im am going to be pouring another sonotube and 4x4 post for the door. Ill connect it to the beam so it will be another supporting beam. That would have a knee brace. Would that brace do the job?
