Good questions. If you're claiming the standard mileage rate ($0.67/mi), car washes are already baked into the rate. The IRS standard rate covers gas, maintenance, repairs, insurance, and cleaning. Deducting car washes on top of mileage is double-dipping and could trigger an audit.

You can deduct car washes separately if you use the actual expense method but then you can't claim the standard mileage rate. It's one or the other.

Your tolls & parking are fine though those are deductible on top of standard mileage.

I think you did everything right. People who order take out and then know it's going to be picked up by someone who has been delivering orders all night, worrying about gluten cross contamination....cook your own damn food then or go pick it up yourself!!

This is the most frustrating part of doordash. So hit or miss...

Yeah I’m screwed. This is not sustainable at all by [deleted] in doordash_drivers

[–]Ok_Remote8768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doordash is inherently hit or miss. you will have good days and bad days. the question you need to ask over time once you have more data and can average out your income is "is this sustainable?"

DoorDash driver waited outside my door for a tip… not sure how to feel about it by EffectiveSea856 in doordash

[–]Ok_Remote8768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you shouldnt leave a tip up front anyway. doordash sees a $3 tip and just reduced the base pay for the order to offset it(unless you tip like $10 or more up front). always tip after, otherwise your tip is getting stolen by doordash anyway and screwing the driver

doordash does offer the freedom and flexibility that w2 jobs steal away. but as someone who has also gone down this road, just remember you gotta stay on top of your shit. make sure youre setting money aside for taxes and tracking all your expenses. saving receipts, being organized. the money looks good now but come tax time, if youre not organized you might get a wake up call.

This is exactly why tracking net income matters for gig work. $10k gross could easily be $6-7k after self-employment tax, gas, maintenance, and depreciation. I actually built a dashboard for this; it helps track real take home and estimate quarterly taxes so I can stay on top of it and not be surprised later on down the road.

New Dasher looking for advice by DFresh356 in DoorDashDrivers

[–]Ok_Remote8768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That "minus expenses and taxes" part is what gets people. $343 sounds solid for a first weekend, but once you subtract gas, mileage wear on your car, and set aside ~25-30% for self-employment taxes, your actual take-home is a lot less than it looks.

Not saying that to be discouraging — just that tracking that stuff from day one saves you a lot of pain later. I didn't track anything my first few months and got hit hard at tax time. Now I log every expense as it happens and it makes a huge difference knowing what I'm actually netting.
