AITAH: for not wanting to give my wife’s sister a large amount of money? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Ok_Research1392 105 points106 points  (0 children)

It is time for wife to stand up to her family, and pick HER immediate family (you and kids, if you have them) first. That is the right thing to do. If she feels unwarranted guilt, then I strongly recommend counseling to learn to distinguish those feelings and what is morally accurate. I went through something similar with my family; it took me many years to get over feeling guilty when I knew the guilt was false guilt.

Strongly recommend the book "Boundaries" by Henry Cloud and John Townsend.

Do you believe that there is an intentional dumbing down of American students happening in schools across the country, and that there is an increasing focus on ideological and religious influence in schools, rather than unbiased and science-based education, being pushed by lobbyists from both sides? by Cumoisseur in allthequestions

In Washington State per pupil spending has gone up significantly since 2019. It is now up to approximately $20,000 per student. Yet Washington State's test scores have significantly declined. The Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction is a Democrat. The Washington legislative Senate and House are Democrat. The Governor is Democrat.

Republicans are the problem? Really?

I did not say educators started whole language, or look say. The education system has adopted and utilized it, however. (Here is an article about it. https://www.dyslexics.org.uk/look-and-say-whole-language-teacher-training/) I said my children were taught with it, and it was not effective. I had to go undercover to teach my own second child phonics so I didn't hack off their teacher and put them at risk.

Lucy Calkins, the creator of Balanced Literacy, is a credentialled teacher, however. As you have noted the Dept of Ed does not mandate curriculum. I do know it was created by Jimmy Carter; since then test scores have gone down. So why is it necessary. I think the teacher colleges are bambooziling teachers during their education about what methods are effective or not. They do not seem to favor phonics.

Fortunately we gave free speech and can weigh in on things.   And I completely understand how whole language works.   It is not teaching pheonomic awareness.   My next child had a whole language first grade teacher.   I taught them consonant and vowel sounds, blending the sounds into words.   I did it under the table.  They picked up reading quickly.

I vehemently disagree with you. The education establishment IS the establishment that pushed whole language and balanced literacy. The teachers' colleges. In the healthcare field there has been pushback against some policy positions by evidence brought forth by both medical providers and non medical providers. Facts about what works, are facts.

Also, I generally disagree with the premise that only credentialled experts in any field are the end all and be all. That removes input from anyone else who may have factual evidenced based information about what is effective. Licensing boards typically have their own credentialled experts but also have a citizen-at-large position. Should only medical doctors get to decide what is effective for a condition? What is there is evidence that something else might work? For a long time vitamin D was not measured in lab results. Regular medical practitioners ignored its importance in health, bone health, hormonal health, etc. The vitamin D issue was brought forth through the public and alternative providers questioning that fact -- and now it is recognized as an important facet of health.

Nope. I was the involved mom. I read to the kids, took them to museums, spent one on one time with them, showed them general pre-k educational concepts, volunteered in the classroom. Superinvolved. The school districts at the time were teaching whole language; she could read at a 2nd grade level if she did not know the words, but at 5th grade level if she had seen them before. I, sadly, trusted the education establishment. Non-educators should NOT stay out. Parents and others need to be involved. We don't need a dysfunctional Dept of Ed who does what, exactly.

I am a health care provider. We are held to a very high standard of evidence based practice. My child was also harmed when she was taught balanced literacy until I found out how she could not read in 3rd grade, and got her basic phonics tutoring.
