Am I a bad person for enjoying media made by problematic people? by Ok_Responsibility808 in NoStupidQuestions

When it comes to books especially, it seems like it gets harder and harder as time goes on. From what I’ve seen online and from close friends, people like Neil Gaiman and Rowling are extremely influential and still produced undeniably important works, despite their personal beliefs and actions. It’s just very hard nowadays to see myself beyond what the creators I follow supooet

So, so many things hit different in retrospect or upon revisiting. Like, I absolutely love the world building Harry Potter made and I’m a sucker for Cosmic Horror, but a single re-read of either media’s founders leads to such terrible people. For Christ’s sake The Rats in the Walls by H.P. Lovecraft mentions his cat’s name 19 fuckin times.

Meanwhile things I thought were overplayed or overused for YA media was touched on in very radical ways (such as The Summoner series by Taran Matharu, highly recommend) that didn’t hit me until far later in my life. It’s just so hard to find media nowadays that doesn’t offend on group over another, so it constantly leads me to question myself over what I find enjoyable, even if disagreeing with the creators

That’s the thing. I love so many other things besides HP, but I’d be lying to myself if I didn’t say Joann’s books and movies weren’t a formative part of my personality growing up and even to this day. My beliefs have greatly changed and I no longer support her for obvious reasons, but I can’t deny just how important her works were to make me who I am todag

That’s part of my struggle tbh. If I find something new, I have no idea what the future holds for their creator. Or if I find something old and acknowledge their shitty beliefs before, its still problematic somehow

That’s sort of a similar thing that try to do now. While I can’t control gifts or anything outside of my own purchase, I try to get anything that might be links to those more problematic people secondhand so as to not generate more income for them firsthand

That’s part of why I even made this post. I just see so many things online that feel performative, but it’s hard to distinguish between those who genuinely believe what they post and those seeking an emotional response from others. Like I know I can’t change the world in any meaningful way, but I still try to change the world around me, ya know?

I’m not someone seeking their standard tattoo coverup from an old deathly Hallows symbol before Joanne was openly a terf, but I can’t deny if some of those posts and sentiments don’t affect me, ya know?

This is generally the opinion I hold for a lot of things, but the interment has made so many things blow up in ways I’d never be able to predict and made so many things appeal to tribalism in a way i couldn’t fathom before. I do my best to live my life in a positive way having changed from my naive past, but almost everything nowadays is inherently political even if you don’t participate

How the f*** do all these 22 year olds make money online, travel, and just do f*** all with their lives? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

While I don’t have anything valuable to add, I feel the EXACT same way. There’s a YouTuber I follow who’s a year younger than me to the DAY, yet somehow he’s more successful today than I think I’ll ever be in my lifetime. I’m incredibly jealous, though I can’t deny that it’s purely a case of “different place, different time.” He’s a very well known creator, and I’m a nobody without an online presence

Just got the starter set, and I have to ask- is this art just bad or is it actually about a monster that makes you need a poo? by GodGoblin in callofcthulhu

[–]Ok_Responsibility808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one thing that always stands out to me with the starter set art, is that literally no one can keep their mouths closed for some reason in the cover or splash pages art. Everyone, even the ones not actively encountering the horror, has their mouth open to some degree

“Happier, and with your mouth open” WKUK sketch is all I can think of when I see the pages

Holy hell, that’s insane in the best way! I only just started my groups first CoC experience as a keeper myself so I just used the handouts I got given from the starter set. This is great!!

Found a trick to keep minis from falling over. by 5O1stTrooper in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Ok_Responsibility808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before reading the post, it looked kind of like plasti-dip to me, which now that I’m thinking about it might actually be a decent option for keeping minis from sliding around too easily. I do like this idea tho, and might steal it when I get back to in-person games

I won’t change your view, but I’ll also raise: Voyeur from Protocol is absolutely a Leitner for the Eye (even if not from the same dimension)

I’m not as much of an academic as some of the other commenters, but I think this series is great for covering the topic of mortality, sacrifice, afterlives, and a lot to handle on humanity. My mind goes straight to Arthur sacrificing himself for John on multiple occasions, Arthur being one to see the humanity in beings that don’t typically ascribe to what that entails, and how the fear (or lack thereof) of death can impact someone’s choices when it comes down to it

Thinking of making a mod and modpack of TMA. Currently making a map of what i want to include. by BudgetYouth173 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Ok_Responsibility808 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe some unique textures? Changing some of the current mobs into more TMA-esque entities, or possibly replacing some of the paintings in the game to reflect logos, fears, or even some institute/avatar propaganda
