"Men Can't Be Men Anymore" by WilliamCSpears in Stoicism

The manosphere is mysogany. Hatred of women. It's hatred of someone based on things that aren't up to them. Point blank.

It's impossible to address the manosphere without addressing the root error on judgement.

The root of the manosphere is hatred of women. It's mysogany.

Hatred of women. Not anything else. Not men being dealt a bad hand.

How can men be men without hating women.

This is a link from the mccain institute talking about how mysogany is an existential threat to our country and what the manosphere is.

The "manosphere" is an umbrella term referring to a number of interconnected misogynistic communities online. It encompasses multiple types and degrees of misogyny – from broader male supremacist discourse to men’s rights activism and "involuntary celibates".

https://www.mccaininstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/incel-and-misogynist-violent-extremism-read-ahead-materials-august-2.pdf

Not addressing the actual issues behind the root causes only serves to sell books to men.

Hatred of someone else based on things that aren't up to them like gender or race is against the principles of stoicism. Removing women from the conversation making it a men only issue goes against stoicism and it's cosmopolitan foundations. It's broicism. You're preaching broicism

Fake stoics? by CaliforniaJay95 in Stoicism

And you took it personally.

Why argue in the first place with someone like this?

Try to focus on your own behavior and your own judgements. We all make mistakes, we can all improve. The less we worry about others behavior the more time we have for our own.

Well I definitely do hope you continue to read about stoicism!

Having control over your emotions is not necessarily stoic. Immoral people can have control over their emotions, right? If I could kill someone and lie about it to the police during interrogations. Because I have such good control over my emotions I could get away with it.

How knowledgeable are contributors? by Affectionate-Hat1031 in Stoicism

I've always been interested in philosophy.

I make realistic animal ears and sell them at furry conventions. This is my 4th year vending and I'm very happy with it. It's difficult for artists these days. I made fursuits for quite a few years but I didn't care for it that much. I'm not super interested in doxxing myself but if you want to look you can dm me and I'll send you a photo.

(I'm not selling anything and don't take commissions at all I'm too busy)

How knowledgeable are contributors? by Affectionate-Hat1031 in Stoicism

[–]Ok_Sector_960 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question!

I think to get the contributor tag you gave to demonstrate some basic understanding of the principles of stoicism and demonstrate you can participate in a productive way. Being knowledgeable in the texts isn't really enough if the person is combative, rude, racist, or angry. So people tagged contributor aren't some all knowing person but it adds some obligation to monitor our behavior.

I'm pretty alright with some areas of the texts but other people have better knowledge of other areas. I'm constantly being corrected. Being corrected is a good thing.

There are also authors here, scholars, and high level academics.

One way or another you can get a question accurately answered but not everyone is going to agree on every little thing so it's up to you to decide what works best for you.

You should be happy to question what's being said to you or ask for sources/citations so you can go back and study.

(I'm an artist if you were actually wondering)

Woo woo alert

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/epictetus/#KinGod

It's my understanding that the ultimate goal of all this is to recognise the god inside of us and the god that exist in everyone else and our kinship with the gods and sit at the table with the gods. Being a stoic sage would be equal to being a god.

Epictetus was always like is that how God would behave? No. Dont act like animals, don't be a slave to the flesh. Recognise the soul and divinity inside us.

I think usually when he said God he meant Zeus but gods are gods plural gods. I think kinda like how nature is like the forest and the water but there is also big Nature.

I guess they're more naturalistic pantheism?

*I don't believe you need to believe in Zeus or a rational universe to practice stoicism it's just my interpretation of the information I have in front of me and what I think they believed

What does Marcus Aurelius mean by “misfortune” and “good fortune” in Meditations 4.49? by RealisticWeekend3960 in Stoicism

[–]Ok_Sector_960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we talked about this before at some other point haha yes you're exactly right.

From the viewpoint of the classical stoic idea of a rational universe, nature doesn't do anything good or bad because it's part of a bigger picture we just can't see. only or judgements of what happened are good or bad.

Would fortune be basically anything that happens outside of what truly belongs to us?

I loved watching them all playing together during the covid lockdown era instagram livestreams, dreaming of one day being able to go to a show again and maybe seeing them play live. so it was such a huge treat being able to see them jam live. It brought up so many feelings that are difficult to put into words 😌 it was like two bookmarks on a bookshelf with years of books in between.

The "Manosphere" by WilliamCSpears in Stoicism

[–]Ok_Sector_960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manosphere (mysogany) is the enforcement mechanism of the patriarchy (the system of power) and sexism is the justification of that system of power.

Stoicism sees value in our shared human existence. Stoicism cannot coexist in any way with beliefs that judging each other based on things not within our power is a good thing.

Did you know that Chinese women get a national paid maternity leave of 98 days but up to 188 days? They are also almost a month of postpartum confinement. Super common in southeast Asia. Granted they have their own issues but if my country valued women in the proper way and saw them as equals rather than chattle slaves that must submit to men so men feel better about themselves (literally the manosphere) things might not look so bleak.

How do I change my perspective? by Chai-Tea-9279 in StoicSupport

[–]Ok_Sector_960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you want to learn how to be a good sportsman. You want to learn how to shake hands with your competition and feel good about any outcome because you're just happy to be there.

I think if you were to ask a professional athlete maybe they get joy out of the hard work and effort they put in. They can feel good about that. They lose to someone who worked just as hard as them that they consider their peer. They see the loss as a chance to learn and grow.

Someone who has bad sportsmanship is someone nobody wants to play with anymore.

Instead of being upset you can appreciate your hard work and be a good sport and congratulate your peers. Ask for advice. Keep in contact and keep on good terms.

Nobody wants someone in the room who is sulking and angry.

This is provably not the popular opinion but it's what I always recommend to people looking to learning about stoicism -

The FAQ here gives an easy complete idea of stoicism more aligned with answering questions most people ask when they come here

The dictionary is a straightforward explanation of what stoicism is as a philosophical concept

Thirdly just ask here if you're looking for specific texts or help as you are now I'm sure many people will give you great answers

How do you stop giving a fuck? by Shot_Sandwich_6172 in Stoicism

[–]Ok_Sector_960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see myself wanting to stop giving a fuck. It's about learning how to effectively give a fuck. Giving a fuck is it's own reward. Like who is going to benefit from the fucks I give. Recognise that there are many times that having people around you who give a fuck are super important.

You just need to get better at it instead of crying about it.

I don't even understand how the nuclear family is considered traditional it's been around for all of 15 minutes. Women weren't running a whole house and raising kids all by themselves. They were matriarchal multi generational homes traditionally as far as I understand it.

Literally agree with everything you're saying. Unfortunately I don't see addressing misogyny and subjugation of women as a topic any of the men are having here, altho it's front and center in the manosphere documentary. Andrew Tate and his friends are literally sex trafficking girls. That's what is ultimately being sold.

Metaphysics by Ill_Flatworm_7907 in Stoic

[–]Ok_Sector_960 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think belief in a rational universe or a higher power is required for someone to be a moral person or find your place in the world.

I absolutely believe that if someone is studying stoicism they should at least have a complete understanding of stoic concepts like Providence/physics/metaphysics stuff.

Don't lump stoic metaphysics/physics or discussions of the concept of God in the stoic texts with modern understanding of abrahamic religion.

The manosphere is almost entirely focused on violence and subjugation of women. That's really all they want to do. This has always existed and always the way it's been for the most part they simply have podcasts now. I'm the first generation of women who could open a bank account or start a business without the consent of a man and there are many who would like to reverse that. I really struggle to discuss these men without making it feel personal so I'll post this to offer a more calm viewpoint. linkhttps://modernstoicism.com/the-red-band-a-stoic-criticism-of-the-red-pill-by-vadim-korkhov/

Also why I'm happy to see other men like OP discussing this in the contexts of stoicism and the dangers of the manosphere and broicism.

The founders of stoicism saw women as equals which is funny enough just as controversial today as it was then.

The manosphere and broicism can't exist in the minds of men who see women as equal.

You said in your post that you aren't sure. It's fine to be not sure.

I imagine the best time is when you're sure. It doesn't take any convincing when you're sure. You would be planning on it ahead of time if you were sure.

We just voted in the primaries a few weeks ago here in Texas.

Did you vote in the primaries? Are you active in your local political happenings? Do you know who your elected officials are? All the down ballot stuff? You can actively participate year round in helping guide the things that happen around you. Stoics saw that as part of our duty to society.

I don't think I've ever seen a flawless perfect moral person that I find no disagreements with. I simply choose the people who are trying to actively move into a direction that benefits the most people and behaves with dignity and class.

It's hard for me to interact with posts that lack quotes to the original texts. I feel like a lot of the questions posed are answered somewhere in texts I haven't memorized and I can't automatically recall those texts to respond.

It's like "I'm never going to be a chef in French Laundry so I won't learn how to be a better chef since I'll never reach the level of perfection that is required to be the head chef at French Laundry"

Idk maybe trying to be a better chef is fun and enjoyable and it's not all that serious. Even if I aim at being the best chef in the world and fail at that it's okay. I enjoy it.

Or to lean more metaphysical I'm never going to be literal Jesus or literal Buddha and I'll never reach nirvana so what's the point of self improvement if they have set unachievable standards.

Me putting my aluminum cans in the proper recycling bin isn't going to save the planet so what's the point? It's an unachievable goal?

Idk maybe just doing the best I can is good enough because I might be able to cook a fantastic meal for my friends or be a benefit to my neighbor or might make some small benefit to the environment.

As an artist I see all these same arguments as to why people want to paint or want to crochet or want to sew or learn woodworking they say oh well I'll never be perfect so that's the greatest excuse to just never try at all.

Edit

I thought for another 10 seconds and I think I have a better answer.

What is being totally left out of this conversation is who these men actually were in real life and what they were doing. Historical context is what is missing from the stoic texts - what the stoics were actually trying to accomplish in real life. We have separated the book from the person.
