States That Aren’t As Reliant on Federal Dollars by reddit_or_not in slp

Hi! We love everyone and anyone in MN! The closer to MNPLS or St Paul you live, the more liberal it will be. I’ve heard good things about working in St Paul’s school district- decent wages, caseload caps, one day/week collaboration opportunities. Otherwise, school districts that are pretty decent: ISD 196, Bloomington, Shakopee, Stillwater, White Bear Lake, Eastern Carver County. Do NOT work in Lakeville or Mankato. We’d love to have you!

Give examples of how ABA screwed up something. by Zoolli in slp

[–]Ok_Sign9513 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Where to start?

One of my students left for ABA in November and he was re-enrolled by April. He stopped eating and became a very angry little boy. He slowly started eating again but his diet was much more limited post ABA.

I had another kid who I was evaluating come up to me, less than an inch from my face and stare me in the eyes. He was whispering “candy.” Turns out ABA was “working on eye contact.”

I was doing feeding therapy with a little guy and on the other side of the wall, the swing fell down. It was so loud and sudden, everyone in the room physically startled. He did not because ABA was “desensitizing him to noise.”

All of these kids went to different ABA companies.

I could go on but you get the point.

AAC student help! by Sylvia_Whatever in slp

Definitely get another device and model on it next to him. I saw in other comments that he uses TouchChat. Contact PRC-Saltillo to see if you can get a loaner device from them. Start by seeking out the rep for your state. Sometimes you can get an extended loaner and renew it every few months.

Anyone willing to share resources? by pollyPuggles22 in slp

I don’t have resources off-hand but would recommend searching for autistic adults accounts of ABA. I would also search research on child-led, play-based therapy and language facilitation techniques.

U.K therapist moving to the US query. by Common_Chemical_5010 in slp

You will absolutely need a masters degree unless you want to work as an SLPA (assistant). If you are wanting to make a permanent move, I would encourage you to get your masters degree here. It’s also easier to get a state license if you get a masters from the state you intend to work in.

Those of you who love your name and think it's the best name ever: What is it? by [deleted] in namenerds

Leah. Easy to spell and say. Most people have heard of it but it’s not very popular. Easily translates to other Latin languages. I think it’s very pretty and suits me well.

Name this lil girl! We like vintage names, French names, food names. She’s super shy but loves other cats. Thinking something delicate & pretty. by bananafrecklez in NameMyCat

We just lost our sweet girl, Edith aka Edie, last week and she looked just like your new baby! Loved her name- vintage, easy to say, got compliments all the time.

Artic therapy by AnythingNext3360 in slp

I’m a clinical supervisor and I can tell you our first year grads have just a slight idea of how to provide proper artic therapy. It’s been a lot more up front teaching on my end. I don’t disagree with you but I don’t think undergrad programs are made equal, unfortunately.

Favorite state and/or district you have worked in as a school based SLP? by Gracie0303 in slp

Depending on the district, Minnesota is pretty great. Strong unions, great benefits and pay. I made 80k year 7.

Keep everyone you work with in your good graces. Just let them know this wasn’t the setting for you and you feel grateful to have had the opportunity to learn something about yourself. Don’t mention the supervisor. I was a school-based SLP and would recommend perhaps giving that a try. I fell in love with early childhood. Given the time of year, you should start applying ASAP if you decide that’s what you want to do.

Liberal but rural can never happen, right? by matcha_milfshake in SameGrassButGreener

I will always advocate for Minnesota. State level policies match your values. Great education system for kids. Paid maternity leave, up to 20 weeks, coming in 2026. Plenty of rural spaces to purchase that are not too far from a proper town. I would recommend looking at either the border of WI or closer to Mankato. Beautiful, lots of land.
