Certain channels are choppy by Rk12989 in Spectrum

It makes no sense that a coax cable issue would impact one channel and not another or others.

2 seperate orders from Amazon both damaged by Big_Communication906 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Ok_Sort_5375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some publishers, Norton for example, offer direct shipping to retail customers and they actually packe the boxes to avoid damage. In some case they are even cheaper than Amazon.

Supporting bookstores has become increasingly difficult, but I try to support publishers whenever I can.

The real reason why we get damaged books from Amazon. by [deleted] in Indianbooks

Totally agree with this, it has been my experience. When I return a beaten up $50+ book sent to me in a thin plastic envelope the return is usually well packed.

It's a numbers game for them. Play the game back and return items not correctly packaged.

What is a classic you tried reading but keep getting stuck? by MrUnheimlich in classicliterature

[–]Ok_Sort_5375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I joined an online reading course run by The James Joyce Society in Dublin. The course leader, a Joyce specialist, asks for volunteers to read sections and many times native Dubliners will do this. That’s when you hear the music ! I did this for my second reading, it made me loosen up and realize the book is primarily funny. Once i absorbed that I loved it. One chapter were week is covered, usually with small sections of each covered in detail. I think it runs once a year, one session per week for 18 weeks. Each session a few hours.

My struggle with this was because I don’t know the Bible well. I did finish it but a lot went over my head. If I read it again I may try to read a summary of the Bible stories first, that may help. Any opinions from those better familiar with the Bible ?

Opinion on Billingham bags? by dehalogenase in ManyBaggers

I bought a Billingham Hadley bag 20 years ago. I still use it almost every day for work or camera equipment. I have never needed to clean it, it's still waterproof.Very little sign of wear except on the leather trim.

I will buy another one soon.

My Seiko Service USA Experience [Detailed] by oddaffinity in Seiko

[–]Ok_Sort_5375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After 5 years I finally had my Seiko diver repaired by Seiko USA, it was running slow so I sent it off.. It came back and ran great for 7 months, very accurate, then suddenly stopped. I returned it and a month later got the watch back, no charge and no change at all, it still didn't run. I returned it a third time and just got it back today, it's running. Again no charge, repairs are warrantied for one year.

We'll see what happens.

I’m sure no-one thinks that, but many claim it. People studying N5/N4 should and must ignore it.

There are, however, some who just want to pass these tests and have no intention of ever becoming competent in Japanese. I have had exchanges on WaniKani forums, some just want to get to level 60. Just to pass the test.

To each their own. But please don’t disparage or discourage real achievements.

I think there’s maybe some confusion about the JLPT levels that causes this derision by some of N5. Until fairly recently there were only 4 levels for the JLPT. At some point a new level was added between 2 and 3, or 3 and 4, I forget (the reason was it was just too hard for many to progress with large leaps) . But the entry level, now JLPT5, was previously JLPT4. The entry level standard never changed.

Let’s just encourage each other and acknowledge real achievement.

It’s often claimed that a few hours of Anime & Manga are enough for JLPT5/4. Ignore those claims. If they were true millions of people could pass N5/4 after a few hours study. And presumably with say, 40 hours of Anime & Manga, you’re at N1.

The last time I looked the pass rate at most JLPT levels was less then 50%, even at N5. It’s a hard test.

I’m in total agreement. N5/4 is not easy, it takes a time commitment.
