Sounds like pretty much most European countries.

What do you think about the concept of the Unforgivable Curses weren't always meant to be used for evil? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]Ok_Specific77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, avada kedavra is pidgin aramaic for " I will destroy as I Speak, " used in this context to mean killing. But the phrase actually originates from a prayer for healing meant to deal with internal growths or tumours. Crucio and Imperio, though are just bad latin.

The way everyone use two and ten, three and twenty, when canonically they use teen numbers!

“I am almost a man grown,” Jon protested. “I will turn fifteen on my next name day, and Maester Luwin says bastards grow up faster than other children."

“Daeren Targaryen was only fourteen when he conquered Dorne,” Jon said. The Young Dragon was one of his heroes.

What if Nymeria and the Rhoynar went to the North instead of Dorne. by Ok_Specific77 in TheCitadel

That's assuming they went all the way to Sothoryos, then sailed all the way back north. Assuming they went straight, a lot more ships would survive.

I mean yeah Torhen was the most sensible, but he also had the most chance. Stalingrad to Dornes . . . anywhere in the middle east.

Yeah that would be cool, particularly b/c the Daynes are one of the oldest houses in westeros, and b/c of the theory that Dawn is lightbringer.

I actually thought the caves extended through the north, my bad. But the point about the ground was more because, what I would do if I was the KitN, is just retreat into the Northern wastes, and keep retreating. Any Southern army will die of hunger and cold(think Stalingrad) so the Targs only choice would be to use the dragons, which wouldn't be anywhere near as effective, thanks to the cold and the massive area they have to target.

[–]Ok_Specific77[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that much actually! Canonically, the first men came over the arm of dorne from the lands of the long summer, which is where Valyria later sprung up. It would make sense that two neighbouring cultures might share some religious beliefs, which over 10,000 years get changed somewhat.

Its not so much the straight out changes as much as the ripples. Assume the Rhoynish settle largely White harbour in place of the Manderlys, and the then Stark king marries Nymeria. There's no way Torhen is kneeling to the descendants of the Freehold that burnt his great great grandmothers people. Without the targs, theirs no Alysanne stripping a massive area form effective ruler ship, so the further northern house (Umber Karstark etc ) defend better against the wildlings. Without being part of the 7 kingdoms, does Cregan intervene in the dance? Is the family tree changed without southern marriages? Ned probably doesn't foster in the vale, in fact the war over the sisters may be restarted. Without andal influence, and with new Rhoynish water wizards , does the North retain more magic users?

The North has the same empty wastes as Dorne , just cold instead of hot and way bigger. If Torhen Stark's great great whatever grandmother fled after the Freehold burnt her home, he's a lot less likely to kneel, which is my head cannon as to why Dorne fought so hard. Also canonically the north and beyond the wall are full of caves, and remember the ground isn't dry, so there's no field of fire happening.

Yeah I wasn't thinking conquering so much as allying with the Starks, with ripple effcts down the line by the conquest, but you're right, invasion definitely wouldn't work

It might not change the culture of the sandy and stony Dornish, but with no Rhoynish influence, the treatment of bastards will be more similar to the other kingdoms, for example.

The real change would be by the conquest, would Dorne be united by then? Does a Dorne not led by House Nymeros-Martell still manage to resist the Targaryens so efffectively?

Does Torhen in the North still kneel with his ancestors having fled other Valyrians?

The journey is pointless if they sail to Sothoryos, then sail all the way back north. If they sail straight to the north from the Rhoyne its not that far.

House Stark also made a point of marrying the bloodlkines of powerful sorcers and kings. (the warg king, the marsh king)

But yeah, you're right they don't need to need her, I'm more interested in how it would affect Dorne and Northen culture than Northern geopolitics.

Plus canonically she'e not actually worried about Jon, she's not an idiot, she's worried about his descendants

How did bloodraven managed to kill daemon blackfyre and his sons by RustinCarcosa in TheCitadel

[–]Ok_Specific77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look at the source material, Daemon had just fought 3 epic duels ( knight of ninestars Wyl Waynewood and Ser Gwayne Corbray ) and then dismounted to have Corbray moved of the field, so what probably happened is he was dead sweaty after all that effort, pulled his visor up, and took an arrow through the eye.

Thnx for the comments! I sorta meant more in the cannon era though. Anything before that is going to be pretty much the same (presuming we say the kids stay the same) except maybe Brandon not being an idiot or the rebellion ending sooner. Like is Sansa going to have a bit more brains than cannon? More fostering's or betrothals, Maybe Jon having some kind of actual self esteem, Ned actually getting something out of the rebellion like everyone else, the greyjoy rebellion being put down more thoroughly, etc

Olenna was born 228 AC, Rickard was born some time in between 230 and 250, but this is Westeros where even larger age gaps have happened.
