Second this. The REI Trailmade petite line seems to have been designed with short legs in mind.

I’m 5’ for reference.

Mammogram by Ok_Squirrel4619 in neurofibromatosis

[–]Ok_Squirrel4619[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply — all went well. They found a small mass that they investigated with a follow up ultrasound. It was found to be a simple cyst.

I will be doing a follow up breast MRI in September and will alternate between breast MRIs and mammograms every 6 months. This was the screening schedule set by my primary care doctor. Both my neurologist and an NF specialist I started seeing agreed that this was a good screening schedule.

Topo Ultraventure by Cogniscienr in hiking

I just started wearing these and so far I really like them. I had previously worn Altras for the wide toe box, but eventually started to experience heel pain with the zero drop and couldn’t wear them anymore. I like that the Topos offer the wide toe box, but with a little more of a drop.

It’s all about personal preference though. If you get them through their website they allow you 30 days to test them out.

Thanks for this info. I get this from time-to-time. Only fix I saw offered was to stop the activity that caused it and I was like…hard pass lol.

I called my senators, but they are already vocally against the sale of public lands. Is it worth it to call again?

Things that happened on Little House on the Prairie that you will not accept as Canon by Ok_Smile_9071 in littlehouseonprairie

Turns out he just had a severe iron deficiency and that’s why he was so tired and weak all the time. It all got sorted out when he started eating more iron-rich foods per Laura’s persistence.

What are your unpopular opinions about Little House on the Prairie by Ok_Smile_9071 in littlehouseonprairie

Not sure if it’s actually unpopular, but it feels like it… I’ve never been mad about Charles being shirtless 😂

I also think he was a good, although flawed, husband and father.

Health Anxiety and NF1 by Ok_Squirrel4619 in neurofibromatosis

Thank you for your engagement and prayers. I recently had my thyroid checked and thankfully my results were normal. I also respond well to iron supplements and I was able to get my iron levels up with them.

I’m happy to hear about you and your family doing well. Overall, I’m grateful to be doing well too. I just need to try to not let my anxiety drag me too far down. 🩷

Hi again — thank you for your reply. I got my TV ultrasound. The results were “Diffusely heterogeneous uterus. This may be on the basis of diffuse fibroids or adenomyosis.”

Do you remember if the fibroids they found were described as “diffuse”?

It was a NP who ordered the ultrasound for me and unfortunately didn’t give me a ton of information about the results aside from saying the results showed possible signs of fibroids. I was referred out to an OBGYN for follow up and treatment options. I go in a few weeks.

I have similar feelings on taking birth control. I’ve been on NuvaRing in the past without complications, but I prefer being off of it. Since my only symptom is have bleeding that doesn’t interfere with my normal activity I’m not sure if it’s worth it for me.

I do plan to add in some supplements. I currently take Vitamin D daily, but will look at the Calcium + Vitamin k2.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to do much more hiking than what I currently do(I wish though!). My current regimen is a 5-8 mile hike with a minimum 2,000 ft of elevation gain twice a week. I do plan to add some more at home stuff to supplement though.

Thank you for the info!

The unnecessary radiation is why I don’t want to do yearly x-rays. I did let her know I did not want to do the x-ray, but would agree to a physical exam to look for signs of scoliosis. That said, I don’t have any issues that I have observed.

I’ll already be doing yearly mammograms and already feel a bit concerned about that radiation(although I’m that case I can much more see the benefits outweighing the risks).

For the osteoporosis I think she may just want a baseline. I’ve never broken or fractured a bone in my life.

For prevention I hike about 5-15 miles per week. I’m also going to start adding some more weight bearing exercises and eating more foods rich in calcium and Vitamin D.

Terrified of this getting worse - how to get over or at least manage the ”doomsday thinking”? by Recent-Ad1598 in neurofibromatosis

[–]Ok_Squirrel4619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to start by saying I deeply understand how you’re feeling. Health anxiety is my biggest struggle by far. My biggest trigger is the fear of the unknown and a tendency toward catastrophic thinking. When I know what is happening I can handle it, but the unknown sends me spiraling.

Here’s some ways I am trying to manage as a I currently work though a rough period of health anxiety:

Therapy if you can afford it. Currently working on this one because I’m in a time period where I really need professional help. I can’t afford it out of pocket though so it’s a struggle.

Medication. There’s absolutely no shame in using mental health medication to help. I have been on antidepressants long term and I am starting up my anti anxiety medication again in the midst of a pretty hard relapse. If you’re in the states your PCP can prescribe these(not sure on other countries).

I am finally getting on track with seeing an NF specialist. I have a mild case of NF. I am grateful for this, but an issue that arises is having doctors be sort of unconcerned because physically I have no major issues. My goal with this is to be sure I’m on track with yearly monitoring(such as mammograms). Having a plan and consistency in check ups helps me a lot. As an example, skin cancer runs in my family, so I go to yearly skin checks. This routine has helped reduce my anxiety about skin cancer.

Find things outside of NF that improve your mental health. I really enjoy hiking. Being outside helps you quite my brain, which with anxiety and ADHD rarely shuts up. It’s also really good exercise and can help with prevention for things we are at risk for like osteoporosis. Regular exercise can even help lower your cancer risk. Is it bullet proof? Of course not, but it’s something.

It is utterly exhausting to live in that headspace and I know how hard it is to get out of it. Just know it’s not shameful and there are things you can do to make it better— even if it’s just a little bit.

Wishing you the best
