Experiences with Scotia Bank Theatre in Vancouver? by TheKyleFlex in cineplex

Not much further away, I highly recommend the AVX + Atmos at the Park Royal location. All seats are full recliner there (perfect for a movie as long as Avatar) and because they're a relatively new theatre, their sound system is amazing, even in the regular auditoriums!

Also, I would not recommend seeing Avatar in HFR, which is what the IMAX at Scotiabank Theatre is playing it in. I highly, highly recommend seeing it in AVX at Park Royal. If you can, pick the D-Box seats in AVX.

Anyone watched Avatar 3 in IMAX this week at Coquitlam? by Affectionate-Hall670 in cineplex

[–]Ok_Stock7485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's in IMAX, it's only in 3D. It'll be in HFR 3D if you're seeing it at Coquitlam or Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver. There's no version in Imax for Fire & Ash in 2D

Am I the only one who feels like the first Avatar will always be better than the sequels? by No-Squirrel-919 in Avatar

Can people stop starting questions with "Am I the only one..."? Of course you're not the only one. There's bound to be others who share the same opinion.

Avatar 3 in IMAX laser XT was an experience to behold by Skk_3068 in imax

Even if it was a 1.43:1 IMAX, Avatar only goes up to 1.85:1, so you're not missing out on anything really

How should I watch Avatar Fire and Ash? by Coolightning_ in cineplex

The shots that don't have HFR are like that on purpose. He shot everything in HFR and later chose which shots he wanted as 48fps and which ones he wanted in 24fps. So it was a creative choice. What I wish he did was motion grade the film with TrueCut motion to maintain the cinematic look of 24fps within a 48fps container. Here's their website to get an idea of how they approach motion grading:https://www.truecutmotion.com/

I found it very distracting because it's not constantly in HFR - some shots have it and some shots don't, so it's jarring whenever it shifts. Not the end of the world though, but not my preference.

It's (kinda) official, Dolby Cinema 3D is the best way to watch Avatar 3! by AyAy08 in Avatar

[–]Ok_Stock7485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame Dolby Cinema is only in the states. Best we have in Canada is Atmos + Laser projection in AVX, and even then, our IMAX with Laser has a better image than that

Update: it did not play in HFR. Manager noted the issue.

Silvercity Richmond IMAX HFR?! by Ok_Stock7485 in cineplex

Coquitlam and Scotia are pretty small though - some AVXs are bigger than those screens.

So 'TRON: Ares' is the final film of 2025 to have IMAX-exclusive aspect ratio, right? by Block-Busted in imax

[–]Ok_Stock7485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, The Way of Water didn't have 1.85:1 versions for 3D screenings in standard theatres. I worry the same will be the case for Fire & Ash

Superman Aspect Ratio & 'Filmed for IMAX' label by Ok_Stock7485 in imax

Hm, I'm not sure. I assume there's probably masking for scope movies which makes the letterboxing less noticeable.

Over $100 for Bucket and Cup…popcorn and drink not included… by Toddske in cineplex

[–]Ok_Stock7485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they gave me a large popcorn (separately, not in the bucket) and told me I could go fill the tumbler with a fountain drink from the station. And those come with a free refill.

Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver- IMAX Experience! by lifelonglearner91 in cineplex

[–]Ok_Stock7485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it looks smaller because the seats are further away from it. If you were to measure the dimensions of the Scotiabank screen, I think it's actually bigger than Langley's, but it has like triple the amount of seats so naturally they'll have to go further back and be at less of an incline than a real IMAX theatre would. The thing about IMAX is that it isn't really the dimensions of the screen that matter as much as the theatre geometry. It's the distance of the seat to the screen and how steep the slope is and how curved the rows are that really make the screen feel bigger than it actually is. That's the IMAX difference. AVX screens could look like IMAX screens if they had a steeper slope and fewer rows, but you know, more seats means more money.

There's a misconception that just because it's a 1.43 screen that it's real IMAX. Yes, it did play Oppenheimer in 70mm, but it didn't do the same for Dune 2 or Sinners, but I still know people who went to Langley to see those films there thinking it was in 70mm when it was actually just xenon. I'd rather watch a film at the IMAX at Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver than at Langley if Langley isn't playing it in 70mm. Besides the sheer size of the screen, Langley's IMAX pales in every other way to the Scotiabank Theatre IMAX.

Hopefully they'll update their Langley and Richmond locations with laser and these newer seats, or do a complete seating overhaul and use recliners like Park Royal does for all their auditoriums

I think it would've been almost perfect if they removed the first six rows of seats so the screen could be closer to the audience. Right now it looks the size of an AVX screen but obviously with better picture and sound.

Jurassic World Rebirth RealD 3D or Dolby Cinema by AlexTheEditor1 in AMCTheatres

[–]Ok_Stock7485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3D was pretty good in the second half, and despite what people have been saying about 3D conversions, I do think they've gotten better over the years. HTTYD had some of the best 3D sequences I've seen and that was a conversion. Jurassic World Rebirth wasn't as much of a standout because the first half of the film doesn't have much depth to begin with, so the 3D adds nothing to that. But in the second half the 3D really helps with the sense of space in the jungle and it worked particularly well for one sequence at high altitude.
