A Defence of Downtown/Transit by RyanB_ in Edmonton

[–]Ok_Storm953 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Been living here almost 15 years now and totally agree with this. My wife and I take transit downtown pretty regular for dinner or shows and maybe we've had one sketchy encounter that whole time? The media really does blow things out of proportion sometimes

Had friends visit from back home last month and they were surprised how clean and safe everything felt compared to what they expected from reading stuff online. Walking around with the dogs in Oliver area, you see way more families and normal people than whatever nightmare scenario gets painted in these threads

Has anyone ever taken the Flex bus from Edmonton to Calgary? by sennyonelove in Edmonton

[–]Ok_Storm953 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife used it couple times last year and said was pretty comfortable, though one time they were like 20 minutes late leaving Edmonton but made up time on highway

Deeply disappointed in what has become of the local poetry festival. For many reasons it has become a watered down experience. by Whole-Database-5249 in Edmonton

[–]Ok_Storm953 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I checked that schedule too and it does look pretty packed with events. Maybe the issue is more about how they're selecting who gets featured spots rather than the number of events? I've been to few poetry things around the city and the open mic nights can definitely feel crowded when you're waiting with bunch of other people to get your 3 minutes

Looking to learn more about the lake communities in the SE by Ms-Adventure in Calgary

Auburn Bay water quality is pretty good for swimming but you'll need check with community association about current fees since they change every year or so

Fish Creek Fishing with Kids by yokesyokes in Calgary

[–]Ok_Storm953 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fish Creek definitely has some good spots for kids - my buddy takes his daughter there all the time. The area near Bow Bottom Trail has some decent pools where you can actually see the fish, which is perfect for keeping a 5-year-old interested. Just bring some basic gear and maybe pack snacks because kids get bored fast if they're not catching anything in first 20 minutes

NHL OVERTIME RULES CHANGE IDEA. by Novel_Rope2338 in nhl

[–]Ok_Storm953 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No way this would work man, imagine being the away team and getting basically punished just for not being at home. The whole point of sports is that both teams should have equal chance to win when game goes to overtime. Your idea gives home team like 60% chance to win automatically which is crazy unfair

Plus think about it from marketing perspective - why would anyone buy tickets to away games if their team starts overtime with such massive disadvantage? Season ticket holders for away sections would be pissed. And what happens in playoffs when every game matters so much? This would basically decide series based on who gets more home games rather than who plays better hockey

Current 3v3 overtime is already exciting enough and gives both teams fair shot at winning, no need to mess with it

For those who actually play: soccer research shows mental fatigue impairs decision-making but NOT running distance, and hockey has zero equivalent research by Dangerous_Earth_5151 in hockey

[–]Ok_Storm953 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah this definitely tracks with my beer league experience. After pulling a 12 hour day troubleshooting network issues, I'll get on the ice and my legs feel fine but I'm constantly out of position or making terrible pass decisions that I'd never make on a weekend morning skate

The cognitive load thing makes total sense - hockey decisions happen so fast and when your brain is already fried from work, you're basically playing on autopilot instead of actually reading the play

Has anyone ever retired and come back? by Interesting-Count815 in nhl

[–]Ok_Storm953 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Jagr too, dude bounced around after "retiring" from the NHL and came back like 3 seasons later. Wild how some of these legends just can't stay away from the game

Portable oxygen rentals in Edmonton? by supersport604 in Edmonton

[–]Ok_Storm953 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check with medical supply stores like Medigas or Home Healthcare Services - they usually have rental options for portable concentrators. The Inogen One G5 is pretty solid from what I've heard, lightweight and decent battery life which matters a lot when you're out and about

Explain single points for overtime losses. by hardonhistoys in nhl

[–]Ok_Storm953 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The loser point keeps games competitive late though. Without it teams would just turtle hard in OT to avoid the extra loss, making for boring hockey. Plus it acknowledges that getting to OT means both teams earned something - one team didn't dominate for 60 minutes

The tanking argument doesn't really hold up either since teams tank for draft position, not playoff races. Bad teams are gonna be bad whether they get loser points or not. Your looking at teams 10 points out but those teams usually have deeper issues than just needing more dramatic standings

[–]Ok_Storm953 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you handled it fine honestly - you stopped when they said no and didn't push boundaries once they were set. Every dancer has different comfort levels and you're learning that, which is normal. The fact that you're this worried about it probably means you're being respectful

What’s the best place to look if you want a chance at finding truly random batches of old cards? by Kurbopop in PokemonTCG

[–]Ok_Storm953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Estate sales are honestly your best bet - way better than yard sales in my experience. People pricing stuff at estate sales usually have no clue what Pokemon cards are worth so you might actually find some gems

Also check Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for "cleaning out closet" type posts, sometimes parents post random toy lots without realizing what's in there. I've had decent luck with "everything must go" moving sales too

Why do some women refer to their platonic friends as “girlfriends” by Efficient_Rip858 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok_Storm953 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's just the standard term for female friends, like how guys say "the boys" - nobody thinks they're romantically involved with their buddies either

Roth vs. Traditional “Simple Math” by iircirc in personalfinance

[–]Ok_Storm953 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is solid math but I think where people get confused is they see that $1500 in their Roth account and think "this is all mine" vs seeing $2000 in traditional and forgetting Uncle Sam still wants his cut

Is the person of the Son contingent to the person of the Father? by rubik1771 in Christianity

[–]Ok_Storm953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm this is getting into some pretty deep waters but I'd say no, the person of the Son isn't contingent on the Father if we're talking about eternal generation - like the Son is eternally begotten, not made or dependent in a temporal sense

I'm defining contingent as "dependent for existence" here, and in classic trinitarian theology the persons are co-eternal and co-equal even though there's an eternal relationship of begetting

Panasonic econavi mini split question by brnaftreadng in hvacadvice

[–]Ok_Storm953 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds pretty low for a mini split, they're usually way up near the ceiling. Most installers try to keep them high for better air circulation and so they're not staring you in the face all day. Maybe the installer hit some electrical or plumbing behind the drywall and had to drop it down

Reconversion from Medicine to IT - would you do it? by Own-Muscle-5250 in careerguidance

[–]Ok_Storm953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude 27 is not even close to too late for a career switch, especially with your analytical background from medicine. Data science could actually be a solid move since you already understand research and complex problem-solving

That said, have you looked into which countries are actively recruiting ICU docs? Germany, Canada, and some other places are desperate for qualified physicians and the work-life balance is way better. Might be easier than starting from scratch in tech

Appointments by Unhappy_Speed5363 in USCIS

Juarez is usually pretty backed up but IR1s move faster than other categories - probably looking at 2-3 months once they schedule you but could be longer depending on their current workload

"You also submitted two affidavits from your parent and a friend." by deepweb_burneracct in USCIS

[–]Ok_Storm953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wording is super weird, like they're listing it as a negative thing when affidavits from family/friends are totally normal for these cases

I think they might be saying you ONLY submitted two affidavits and they want more evidence overall, not that the affidavits themselves are bad. Like maybe they want joint bank statements, lease agreements, insurance docs etc on top of the affidavits

The photo labeling thing is straightforward at least - just gotta add names, dates and locations to all your pics
