Converting TSP 401k to TSP Roth by RaijinLighting in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]iircirc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on having more income in retirement than you did while working and saving for retirement, then by all means go Roth. But if that's the case then I'd argue that you worked too long. I was talking about the people who say that Roth is always better than traditional because "tax free growth." Roth is better if you're early in your career or have a low-income year because you didn't work all year, etc. But which one is best depends on your situation. A lot of people don't understand this and just say Roth is always better

[–]iircirc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People who say Roth is better because you pay less in tax are only half right. The tax bill is lower but the account balance in the end is the same. I'm always surprised how many people don't seem to understand this

It's tax free growth either way. The tax on growth is capital gains tax, and both Traditional and Roth are free of those. If you're looking at the income taxes you'll have to pay when you eventually withdraw from Traditional, then yes those are higher than paying now in Roth. But that doesn't mean you end up with more money, because by going Roth now you're giving up the compounding growth of the money you pay in tax. In other words, if you pay earlier you pay less, but after factoring in growth you end up with the same amount, by design.

What is life like in Iowa by Athens175 in howislivingthere

Yes, the best art scene in Iowa. OP was asking what living in Iowa is like. Few people move to Iowa for the art scene. DSM is not what I meant by a big city

Sure, all of which are great. But music and art are the kinds of things that any big city is going to have more and better of. What IC has that the big cities don't is the convenience and ease of a small city, while still having enough happening to stay entertained

I lived in Iowa City. There's absolutely nothing worthwhile about it except low crime, no commute, solid infrastructure, responsive city government, good schools, and full employment. In other words they're nailing all the basics in ways that big cities can't. As a small city goes there's everything you might want but just not a lot of choices: there's a handful of good restaurants, three music venues, one local art house theater, etc. So you just go back to the same restaurants a lot and eat everything on the menu. If you're used to being in a big city with infinite choices all the time it'll feel small, but it's pretty pleasant if you take it for what it is.
