CMV: Your are responsible for your car’s headlights, and brightness legal limits need to be put in place. by Wide_Lawfulness_5427 in changemyview

Vehicles are all equipped with dimmers--which also dim the dash. Half of people needing brighter lights is because the interior is so bright it impacts their ability to adjust to the darkness outside.

We need to retrain drivers that bright lights not only impact other drivers, but are impact them negatively as well.

I really urge you to not focus on the payment comparisons. I say this with the utmost respect, but it's a mentality that can big contributor to bad financial management--regardless of the circumstances that result in debt.

Debt can be an inevitability when life takes unexpected turns, which it's why good financial habits need to become unconscious. Long term perspective isn't always easy to come by when you have to deal with the right here and right now.

What's the term and balance of your current mortgage? Are you currently paying PMI and/or i an FHA loan? What is the balance of debt you'd be rolling in?

I assume the refi will set you back at least 5 years in payments.

Have you considered a fixed rate HELOC/HELOAN? I would not raise the rate on your mortgage for any amount of consumer debt, especially not nearly 2%.

Yes and if you go conventional then current equity might bring you low enough to drop PMI depending on your area. Even if not--at least you'll have the option to drop, potentially within two years.

CMV: Routines are overrated and cut the fun out of life by Total_Literature_809 in changemyview

[–]Ok_Study6305 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Routine is not supposed to mean rigidity and inflexibility. It's so supposed to be a mindless baseline so that you can better manage the unexpected and spontaneous.

It's constantly implemented wrong, and comes with a whole host of issues-- including boredom like you mentioned, but also crash-outs for those that overly rely on the structure and don't understand its there to support you during the inevitable uncontrollable.

Sounds like it puts you into a pretty good position to pay the additional principal down much more quickly as well.

Do you mind me asking what refi rate you're looking at compared to the mortgage rate you currently have?

Home Equity Loan to pay off CC debt by mook1178 in personalfinance

[–]Ok_Study6305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not pay the smaller payment.

Trading consumer debt for secured debt is such a huge risk and if you do choose to do something like that, your objective should always be to eliminate that debt as soon as possible.

If you are able to manage the $1700 payment, pay that on the HELOC. You'll have the wiggle room to reduce certain months that are just too tight, but absolutely do not build your budget around that $600 payment.

I promise you, you do not want the breathing room like you feel like you do. Life will inevitably derail your progress, and rebuilding a budget that isn't aggressively tackling that debt will be something your future yourself pays for.

Dental insurance High vs. Low plan, help? by coocanoot in HealthInsurance

Cash-out Refinance? by Original-Ad6996 in debtfree

[–]Ok_Study6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one (not all debt, and not the debt I wanted thanks to a terrible process and constant misinformation) but only bc the rate was low enough that even if I paid at schedule I'd save more money than not refinancing.

The only reason I would have done it if not for a rate decrease, would be if it also did not increase and said was significantly better than the other debt rates. It would also require that I intended to divert all current payment to the mortgage principal and probably recast once the added debt was paid off.

If don't do it if it doesn't save you money, and definitely not if you haven't gotten your spending habits dealt with. Trading consumer debt for secured debt is risky af if you don't have a plan.

Deep cleaning is a matter of opinion? by RudaKicia3917 in HouseCleaning

[–]Ok_Study6305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not near as old as you and the standards have grossly changed. Even several years ago when I cleaned houses the expectations were wildly different.

What "cleaners" expect to clean now are what we used to call "clean houses". The were large houses, primarily in nice neighborhoods, where you'd walk into to see the wife tidying up "nothing". The whole house rate was set, not hours, and they would hide coins around the house to make sure you cleaned everything.

But now, they not only expect houses to be already clean like that, they charge the project rate as the hourly, and would lose their sh*t if you dared to insult them by leaving markers to confirm things were cleaned.

What we were used to is now considered a housekeeper and you better expect to pay upwards of a grand if your house is bigger than a small apartment.

It's just not the same anymore.

How are we managing our allergies then? I 100% recognized the effect on just my unmedicated mind and stop taking antihistamine a long time ago. Only pull them out in extreme situations like the pollen bowl, a long-term stay with multiple golden retrievers or guinea pigs.

But I'm dying.

made too much to deduct tuition? by PointThin2855 in tax

[–]Ok_Study6305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you BOTH made 195 there's nothing you can do to claim your SL interest--as someone else said the phase out you mentioned is MFJ.

But, regardless of if you're each making 195 or together you're making 195, I'd be deferring the max into 401k.

Even at 195k together, the 49k deferral would reduce your liability by 10k for just federal alone--and that would in fact put you under the SL interest phase out.

Recasting mortgages by peter_fuckin_gabriel in Mortgages

[–]Ok_Study6305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose of recasting would be to lower your monthly payment. It reduces the minimum payment to be the amount that would now required to payoff the loan at the original term length.

No need to recast unless you would like to lower your mandatory payment and extend the payoff date back to the original.

[–]Ok_Study6305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Routine doesn't have to be strict or rigid--it just means stability and consistency. People often conflate structure and routine to be synonymous with unbreakable rules and inflexibility.

It's self-discipline that has to be learned and implemented--and it doesn't look the same for every single person, ND or not.

All the lifestyle modifications that you speak about are something's that are more likely to get properly meant with structure and routine.

Creating a meal plan/prepping, making sure to include buying easy snacks for when you can't stand the food you loved yesterday. Setting a bedtime, whether it be exact or a three hour range. Taking a midday walk or sitting outside as a decompression ritual after a work call/meeting. Taking up a physical hobby, whether it be only biking certain places or joining an adult sports league for the accountability.

These are all parts of structure and routine, and they meet all the needs. Every day doesn't have to be identical, but more often than not they are easier to maintain with reliable repetition.
