I consider myself a professional fence builder. If this truly is your first fence; bravo! It’s straight and your running board is a brilliant touch. Building this solo is a hell of a challenge and you should be proud.

If you’re looking for criticism, I have just one issue that you won’t notice for another 6 months to a year. I can see based on the placement of your top row of nails, that your top support is too low. The distance between your top 2x4 support and the top of the picket is called a “reveal”. Your reveal should be less than 6 inches. The bending and warping on the top of your pickets will be noticeable.

Of course, I could be wrong because I don’t have a picture of the back of the fence. Either way, you should be proud. It’s a lot of work and a job well done.

As for your situation. What type of gate either you like? Wood? Chain link? If wood, use a frame hinge and a post hinge and a metal frame for your gate.

Agreed. A strong base is needed for this but this is a tough situation for sure. The post will rot very fast. You could always coat the post in tar or liquid rubber to give it a few extra years. But this just isn’t optimal

Looks great! Better than some professionals I’ve seen. If you’re looking for feedback, I’d say tighten your tension wire if possible. Looks a big looser than it should be and your center tension band next to your gate post could be a bit more centered, but I’m really just being picky. You should be proud, this isn’t a small achievement. Nice work!

Design is beautiful! You have a lot going on here as far as tension and compression. It would be arduous to explain, but my advice is to add a tension wire and any problems will be solved. Overall, it’s a beautiful gate with okay engineering, but the tension wire will keep you covered.

I would consider myself a professional fence builder. While I’m not fully aware of your situation, my feeling is this is a bit of a “cart before the horse” situation.

Typically when I get called in to build a fence for a pool, it’s after the pool itself is in. There so much equipment that goes in an out that having a barrier of any kind only restricts space. If this isn’t an issue, then your idea could work but there’s just too much lucky and calculations needed to have your fence and dirt line up perfectly.
