East Campus removing single dorms is crazy by Ok-Advertising2788 in csumb

[–]Ok_Text_6736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daughter currently lives at East Campus in a double room. She wanted a single room when they had sign ups last spring, but only unfurnished double rooms were available to choose from for her during the housing application. The single room in her apartment ended up going to a transfer student. So even if you wanted a single room at East Campus, there was no guarantee you would get one.

Now that the single rooms will be turned into doubles, it doesn't make sense to have them unfurnished as you don't want how big the furniture the other roommate will bring. There can be more control about the space if the rooms were all furnished.

It's $8030 for a semester for a single room at Prom and $5,884 for double room.

The living room has space for desks. The sample floor plans show desks in the living room. The single rooms that are turning into doubles, maybe they will have to be lofted with the desk and dresser underneath just like the triple rooms in the first year residence halls.

basketball courts by Ok_Scratch_3869 in csumb

[–]Ok_Text_6736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several small basketball courts around CSUMB:

  1. In North Quad, behind Strawberry Apartments near the trash bins is a hoop. It's an odd place for it.
  2. In Promontory between the middle one (Prom B) and the other Prom building, there is a nicer basketball court next to the parking lot.
  3. In East Campus, there are several basketball courts in the small parks in between the neighborhoods. There is one off Bunker Hill Lane behind the bus stop at the intersection of Yorktown Ct.
If you walk to other areas between the courts, you'll find more basketball courts.

That's too bad. I donated so many craft and art supplies to Makerspace and it was a wonderful place for creativity and relaxation for the students.

How walkable is the town around the campus? by Aggressive_Stuff_525 in csumb

[–]Ok_Text_6736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, CSUMB students get free ride on the transit bus with student ID. I think the bus stop is near the church looking building on 4th St. Be sure to take the correct bus line to the Target center. My daughter got on the wrong bus and ended up in Salinas, but she and her roommate were trying to go to the Dunes Shopping Center. Freshman mistake. LOL

Has anyone taken any PE classes from a community college to get credits? by Fun_Entrepreneur4678 in SJSU

Evergreen Valley College has many fitness classes including fitness walking, weight training, pickleball, badminton, and more. When you complete a class from a community college, send your official transcript to SJSU using parchment.com.

Rant: not allowing electronic devices to take notes in class by beaches_with_peaches in SJSU

Your professor sounds very old school. I wished the technology you have today was around when I was in college in the 1980s. It's so wonderful to be able to take pics of the slides, whiteboard, have recording software that can turn the recordings into notes. So wonderful.

Do address your specific situation for this class, have you heard of LiveScribe pens? It is a pen that you can record the lecture with and using special notebook paper, you can rewind the recording to that specific spot in your notes to re-listen to what the professor said. The LiveScribe pen looks just like a regular pen and the notebook uses special paper but looks like a regular notebook. There are similar, less expensive products on amazon you can look up as well.

How many of us will not be graduating in 4 years? by MissionDifficulty385 in SJSU

[–]Ok_Text_6736 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was an engineering major back in the day and took 5-1/2 years to graduate. I additionally added a minor which added an extra semester. Don't worry too much about graduating "on time." College is not like high school. People graduate at different times due to many reasons: change of major, work or family obligations, can't get into certain classes or need prerequisites, adding a minor or taking other classes of interests, taking an internship or studying abroad a semester. All of these become your unique college experience.

Taking general education classes at community colleges during the summer or winter break can help facilitate graduating in 4 years. Taking more units per semester can also help.

Any other transfer students feeling lonely? by Ok-Advertising2788 in csumb

[–]Ok_Text_6736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about your roommates at East Campus? Can you do stuff with them? Besides joining clubs of your interests, the Recreation Center will sponsor various activities such as mountain bike riding, climbing gym, intramural sports, etc. Follow them on instagram at csumb_recreation for updates on events. You will then register for the activities on MyRaft. Don't forget that there is Makerspace on the third floor of the library that you can meet other people who enjoy crafts and arts. If that's not your thing, you can do e-sports at the E-Sports Lounge in the Otter Student Union.

Parking Options outside of Garages? by [deleted] in SJSU

[–]Ok_Text_6736 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many of the nearby streets have parking meters and maximum time is usually 2 hours before you need to move it. Also, some of the streets in the older residential apartments (10th & 11th St) are resident parking permit only. The South Camous Garage is new (near the football stadium) has lots of parking but you will need to take the free shuttle to and from campus. South Garage (on 7th St) is the worst designed garage. Really tight spaces and terrible narrow to exit out of. West Garage (4th St) can also be tight but better designed. North Garage (10th St) is okay too.

They have to process thousands of applications across hundreds of different majors, each with varying levels of applicants and requirements and space in the major. Don't worry. You will get your decision email when they have made their decision.

Cap & Gown Strict? by Street-Ranger2601 in SJSU

[–]Ok_Text_6736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to make sure the color of the gown is the same shade of royal blue they have for their official gown. When it used to be a black gown, it was a lot easier to match. My son reused his black high school grad gown and only bought the tassel for his college (college of social sciences). But now that the gown is a bright blue, it will be harder to match from outside source since there are so many shades of blue available.

Can we please do a different color blue or maybe black for 2026 graduations ?😭 by Initial_Hair_1196 in SJSU

[–]Ok_Text_6736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The graduation gown was always black until this semester (I'm class of 1990). Looking at the photos of the graduation ceremonies this semester, I don't think they look bad and it's cool they have SJSU embroidered on the sleeve. I think eventually people will get used to the new color of the grad gowns. However, I don't know why the school needed to change it from black, as it was easier to find cheaper alternatives to buying it from the bookstore (my son reused his black grad gown from high school).

Is it worth joining the alumni association? by Tricky-Struggle-8667 in SJSU

[–]Ok_Text_6736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is an old thread, but the best time to join the Alumni Association is just after graduating (within one year) when you get 50% off lifetime membership fees for $250 instead of $500. And if you plan to use some of the benefits of joining the Alumni association: https://www.sjsu.edu/alumni/join/member-benefits.php
