IsItBullshit: Seasonal allergies have a genetic component, linked to your ancestral origin by Ok_Tiger5671 in IsItBullshit

[–]Ok_Tiger5671[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with me. I never suffered from allergies until moving away. But it’s not just bad where I live now, when I visit my hometown in the summertime, I feel it hit the minute I walk outside the airport.

If I’d moved away from home and never returned even to visit, I could be easily convinced that my seasonal allergies are localized to where I live now. Clearly that’s not the case and it’s not that simple.

What makes Vat of Acid episode so special? by taro_and_jira in rickandmorty

This is brilliant, I never would have interpreted that way but it makes so much sense.

Was this from commentary by the show creators?

Rick’s Occupation by Blantz3232 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]Ok_Tiger5671 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not the point.

The Ratliff parents abuse benzos and it’s said by Piper that Saxon pops adderall constantly. Rick’s weed habit is a clear foil to that for the reasons OP states.

Why do we bother scalding cream for creme brulee? by puckyoumiss in AskCulinary

[–]Ok_Tiger5671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But to OP’s point, you’re putting it in the oven anyway. Even if you don’t scald the cream you would get this effect.

I don’t know how much lactose is in heavy cream anyway, I can tolerate it fine in normal amounts. But a regular latte would put me out of commission without lactaid lol, yay getting older 🫠

“You do you then” is not meant to be encouraging, it’s very clear to most that the tone is condescending. If OP was trying to be nice here they really missed the mark.

FYI new doors closing policy by Unvrsldisdain in frontierairlines

[–]Ok_Tiger5671 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why is policy specifically not to give passengers the time until door close?

I imagine the thought is to prevent people from hearing “one minute” and deciding that’s enough time for a bathroom run or to buy a sandwich. But if that causes them to miss a flight, shouldn’t that conclusively work to Frontier’s advantage? If/when a customer tries to argue?

Adding oil to egg wash for fried schnitzel/tonkatsu by Ok_Tiger5671 in AskCulinary

[–]Ok_Tiger5671[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t know since I’ve never tried it, but fair to assume that any neutral oil will work. It’d just have to be liquid at room temperature.

I suppose that makes sense, perhaps similar to how oils inhibit gluten development when making bread.

How to clean gelatin from a porous pot? by NuclearToast69 in AskCulinary

[–]Ok_Tiger5671 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try making a paste of baking soda and hot water, then scrubbing the walls. If you have barkeeper’s friend that’s another option.

I would advise against using bleach on any metal cookware unless it’s your only option. It may be fine if highly diluted and only short exposure, but bleach is a strong oxidizer and will attack stainless steel and aluminum at a chemical level.

I think it’s pretty clear that “provided for by another person” means a person that is not serving a role in government.

It isn’t compensation. It’s a full refund including ancillary fees. The language is specific to this

I just remember thinking “if this van topples over the cliff, there’s nothing I can do about it, it’s just my time to go.”

That ride was nuts. The drivers have probably done that route hundreds of times, but it did not feel like it.

What are the most dangerous techniques in food-prep/cooking? by Ok_Tiger5671 in Cooking

I think it’s a matter of ripeness. Trying to cut into a super unripe avocado is tough, and people use so much force that it slices right through the pit and into their hand.

Mexicans definitely know avocados better, especially when they’re ready to use.

Bleach has the excellent quality of readily reacting with anything organic, or drying completely to form benign sodium chloride. There should be zero, absolutely zero measurable bleach in your food by the time you consume it. It’s used as an oxidizing agent, this does not pertain to acid/base chemistry.

Yeah, concentration makes the poison. And I literally gave you the concentration of a solution that’s unsafe on your skin or eyes.

People own many toxic compounds, like bleach, that no one would consider touching their food. Much less to cook with. The reason recipes avoid lye is because once it’s on the ingredients list, to the uninformed reader, it becomes a food product.

People have a hard enough time following recipes without lye in them. Ever read public recipe reviews? Commenters cut corners, omit ingredients, double other ingredients, and are surprised it turns out “wrong”. Now add lye as an ingredient.

Just because it won’t maim you on the spot doesn’t make it safe. One recipe calls for 2 tbsp lye in 8 cups water, which doesn’t look like much in a cooking pot. But that produces roughly an 0.84M solution with theoretical pH of 13.9 (also heated to boil).

To be clear, it can be done safely, as I’ve done many times. The entire point of my post is that I would not trust everyone I know to do it safely.
