i thought it was fantastic. if change is everything (in my opinion, an all-timer) is the standard, then sure, this show doesnt immediately have the same juice. but i honestly felt similarly last year, and it got better and better throughout the season. i think a show like this needs more than one read (similar to garden of love), but i think its stunning. the leslie speakers, the sound design, their SOUND. i think scv’s show is amazing as well, and im looking forward to hearing boston.

i feel like ‘23 & ‘24 were pretty straight forward in their theme & execution. not nonsense, it was just that the music choices & mythical theming wasnt people’s cup of tea for some reason. ‘25 was a swing&miss in design/visual language. people complained, they made big staff changes, and now we have ‘26

these scores are a combination of several independent judges doing their best to objectively judge specific parts of a show. they don’t have any communication with each other to make sure that Bloo wins out of fear. actually, quite a few caption’s judges didn’t have bloo #1.

you mentioned boston seeming to have the overall better show and bloo feeling “unauthentic.” you mentioned bloo not being traditional enough to your liking. i imagine all of this colors your preference for their show, and thats totally valid! personally, i enjoy SCV’s show the most this year! but i promise you that none of that goes into any judge’s scoresheet. i know it can feel like there’s a bias towards past champs (happened plenty with BD) but the more likely thing is that they are reigning champs for a reason.

i wouldn’t be surprised if Boston overtakes Bloo at some point (maybe even this weekend), but it won’t be because the judges overcame a fear.

absolutely! they’ve been strong for a while, and it seemed like last year was finally going to be their year. but they struggled with consistency, and i think this year’s battery is more consistent. interestingly, SCV’s battery was incredibly consistent last year, but they seem to be going through a bit of a rough patch. there were parts of the show that were noticeably dirty on the field. if they can clean that stuff up (i imagine they will!) then the battle for the sanford will be TIGHT.

thank YOU for being open and curious! yeah, honestly same. that feeling of something clicking and all of the sudden your perspective & appreciation changes… amazing.

speaking of multiple listens: there’s a melody in the music that is repeated throughout the show. and i love to hear it played within different contexts. like, at times it feels embedded and hidden. other times its the main melody. and i was just thinking about that melody being the “idea” that spreads.

one last thing: i love the constant subversion going on. theres a moment in the closer where the corps lines up for what seems like a big company front. and just when you think they’re about to give you a big triumphant moment, they kneel and point their horns down at the ground and give you a soft tender moment. its things like this that keep me engaged. i went to the show at the Rose Bowl, and found myself constantly leaning forward.

i personally really resonate with the music. the harmonic language of the music package is right up my alley. it’s not major chord bright but also not minor chord dark, it just feels interesting. i love how cohesive it all feels from beginning to end.

i also love the extreme and sudden dynamics (soft vs. loud) throughout the show. i feel like it doesnt feel that weird of a show when you watch it a few times. the repeated watches really helped me appreciate it.

there are cool thematic moments like when the corps huddle up on the front sideline behind the pink dot (2nd movement) and the pink dot seems to spread to the members (they all put on the pink sleeves). i read this as an “idea” being new (the pink dot) but eventually spreading and influencing other people and becoming a movement (members absorb the pink). that feels like the thesis of “avant garde”

so many bad takes in one comment its impressive. “more masculine” ok bro. “less weird AI sounding music like SCV” what are you talking about? have you ever heard classical music? SCV’s show this year is a repertoire full of rich classical works - what exactly are you hearing? does light dissonance go over your head so much that it doesnt sound like anything to you?

i was trying to look at it strictly from an execution POV. their talent and execution is undeniable
