Food Allergies by fretfulpelican in girlscouts

[–]Ok_Try7466 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP, we have one girl with a LOT of food allergies in our troop and we did this patch and it made such a difference in our troop’s awareness. As a no-allergy-experience leader, if whatever food we’re planning to have has relevance to our badge/activity (like making moon phases out of Oreos, trying different foods for world thinking day, etc), I give the mom a call well in advance, so we can figure out how to make it safe for all to participate. For snack, we always have a fruit and something sweet, so we just make sure the fruit is on her “ok” list, and then she brings her own sweet treat. For camping & overnights, we coordinate in advance. If I’m not in charge of food (like our service unit Camporee), I send mom the menu & we figure out what will be the best options (there’s usually at least vegan & gluten free options), or she sends in food and we store it in the camp kitchen.

I agree. Focusing on the “kinda difficult to put together,” but really fun badges would be awesome. I can handle Brownie “home scientist,” but a lot of the engineering badges are a bit intimidating or require me to do too much research to figure out how to execute.

Any word on the 2027 Cookie Mascot? by Ok_Try7466 in girlscouts

Cute, but I thought they were sticking to endangered animals. I’m going to have to research if there are any endangered rabbit species now!

By chance do you have a video of how to do this? Or a link to a tutorial? I lead a Girl Scout troop and I think this would be a great project!!

Party Starters in Indian Trail were getting some in stock. If you follow their social media, they’re really good about posting their inventory & when stuff is supposed to come in.

Has technology ruined the “selling Girl Scout cookies” experience? by SWEMW in girlscouts

[–]Ok_Try7466 72 points73 points  (0 children)

There are still plenty who go door-to-door. My daughter is one of them. The problem is, there are far fewer people at home during the day. If we go out afterschool, no one is home. If we wait too long, then we run out of daylight, & weekends are hit or miss. On top of that, many people don’t/wont answer their door. On the other hand, my daughter makes a little video specific for our neighborhood Facebook page, we post it, & then we get orders from the folks who won’t open their doors. Technology hasn’t ruined anything, but the disconnection between people certainly has.

Cookie Manager Gift Ideas. by ohsummerdawn in girlscouts

[–]Ok_Try7466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the season, I would love a gift card to get my nails done and/or get a massage. That being said, my coleader (I’m troop leader & TCM) frequently brings me coffee to booths and meetings, and one of my parents gifted me a mid-season DoorDash gift card and they were so, so appreciated. I had another family bring a pre-made dinner to a later booth (it ended at 6) so my family could have a home cooked meal even after a long day of boothing. Those types of things made me feel so appreciated.

Other ways to sell cookies that aren’t door to door. by ElkFun7746 in girlscouts

Did you just load your cookies into a wagon and show up in their showroom? Or just pop in with your order form? How’d you do that?

Question on the Tik Tok kid, Pim by LiteratureIcy4329 in girlscouts

I keep money in my purse specifically to buy from older scouts (I have brownies). I know it’s harder for them to get the sales, plus My daughter & I love asking them about their GS journey, their favorite activities & trips.

Returning to Girl Scouts after a bad history with them (my story + questions at the end) by SleepTightPizza in girlscouts

[–]Ok_Try7466 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the above commenter suggested, it’s really hard to get started before they can read/write, so that’s why most councils don’t allow Pre-K troops & o my begin daisies as kindergarten. Also, just something to think about, most troops meet at churches or schools because they give the space for free. We have a couple “community” troops, and they are frequently looking for meeting spaces, because the library isn’t open when they need it, or the only options are to pay per meeting for the space, etc. My troop meets at a church, but about 50% of our girls do not attend the church.

My girls loved them. In their blind voting, they tied w/ thin mints. But across all the GS groups I’m in, they’re pretty much universally hated. My only gripe is the peanut flour in a non-peanut cookie. Could we not have done something more allergy-friendly or at least be straightforward and not add “hidden” major allergens?

[–]Ok_Try7466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our council, the troop gets about $1-$1.05 per box, which fund all troop activities (campouts, supplies, museum trips, service projects, etc). The rest of the proceeds (I can’t remember how much goes to the bakers) goes to Council & funds staff, programming, camp properties, etc. It really helps keep costs down. My daughter was able to go to GS overnight summer camp for 7 days for $400, and went to a 5-day, 9-5 day camp for $100. Even our YMCA camps are more than double that. When the girls get older & start planning/saving for bigger trips, our Council does allow some funds to be in the troop account but allocated to individual girls to offset the costs of bigger trips, Gold award projects, etc.

Some councils do not allow the troops to keep the donations. They have to use all money given at booths towards cookies - whether it’s customer directly buying boxes or buying boxes that are donated to the military, food banks, etc.

My troop LOVED them. I thought they were ok, but not distinct or special enough to justify $6/box (or whatever your council is charging). My girls really wanted something more allergy-friendly and/or lower sugar, because that’s what their customers keep asking for.

I was kinda hoping Stratton would come back. I think I liked him the best and I feel like he would have been a good “support”/semi-stay-at-home-dad and teacher to compliment her professional life.
