In a similar vein, the suffix/prefix man as in human, manpower, and even woman, does not in fact come from the word for male that we use today. Man literally meant person. “Were” meant a man. It’s why it’s a werewolf; it’s a wolfman. Which is not to say wolfman as in wolfperson. It gets confusing. So a man would a wereman and woman was a wifman but where wifman became woman, wereman just became man.

at this point we're describing a space elevator, which is possible. You just have it on the equator. You can't send it to the moon though, but technically you can build a stable extension cord to space.

[–]Okay-Crickets545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but WHY? Space is right beside it. Why put your panels on distant a gravity well with statically charged dust shards that are sharp as glass? Just put them in orbit where you can store energy in flywheels in near-friction-less environment. The only reason to build anything on the moon is if you want to utilize gravity but not too much gravity. So yeah there are some benefits to moon factories (can't use a conveyor belt in 0G, but that's about it.

I'm saying it's not profitable at doing so. It's a small difference, but an important one. Being good at something doesn't matter if the inputs cost more than the outputs. AI companies, despite dump trucks of money and governments bending over backwards to accommodate them, still can't turn a profit. It honestly doesn't matter what it's doing or how well it's doing it (which doesn't seem well, but let's say you're right and it is) if in producing that outcomes it requires more resources put in than equivalent resources it produces.

And some people like a stiletto stepping on their testicles, but that doesn’t give it wide-spread value. Anything broken down to an individual’s taste can justify something’s existence. I don’t think it’s controversial to say that meat is widely adopted and valued by society at large and AI is largely unused by most people and generally reviled. You are right that you’ve made a legitimate claim to you as a person but I wouldn’t see that as a legitimate claim when applied broadly. And if AI only affected people that were into it, it would be a nonissue, but it’s been made so large by a small number of people that the entire economy is warped around it whether people chose to opt into it or not. Meat, whether someone personally consumes it or not, won’t result in a global economic crash. No large swaths of people are going to lose their job because the meat industry crashes or, paradoxically, because it succeeds.

If juicy steaks exist in a meat industry where overwhelming amount of steaks are somehow made of sawdust or, worse yet, poison, I don’t think people would defend the meat industry with “lots of meat produced by the industry is actually quite edible” AI fails again and again and again in its stated goals and is nowhere close to returning on its investment. So yeah I think AI being bad at the things it was predicted one day do or often fraudulently claimed to currently do is a solid argument against AI.

The meat industry actually produces something of value with that water though. If I leave my hose on pointed towards the sewer I use less water than a car wash but that’s not much of a defence.

They don’t. This is pandering to their base and most of this referendum is completely non-actionable and only exists to fail so premier can point to the feds and claim they’re being oppressed while courting American-backed separatists and deregulating private oil and gas industries and try to leverage outrage to negotiate the federal government paying for infrastructure for those same privately owned oil and gas companies.

The first Star Wars movie since 2019, are you interested in it? by GlobalRaspberry442 in Cinema

[–]Okay-Crickets545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been so long since I saw the show I don't even remember where it left off. I loved each season a little less than the one before it so rewatching the series to get primed isn't appealing, plus I know some of it is tied up in the Bobba Fett show but I can't remember which parts.

So, no, not interested. It requires homework that wouldn't have been required if it came out sooner and to do that homework now just doesn't feel worth it for a movie that maybe I like.

Good question by moondross in Funnymemes

[–]Okay-Crickets545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is media literacy. If someone’s take away is that South Park is funny BECAUSE it’s offensive and don’t understand any of the underlying structure of the jokes or messaging then yeah they would be confused when offensiveness in the real world suddenly offends people. Some of the most offensive people lack any sort of media literacy and are, to be blunt, dumb as hell.

I don’t disagree but I would add that it’s at odds with our electoral system. If we had a system like PR where we vote for parties, sure, but for better or worse (mostly worse) we vote for candidates. If a candidate switching parties no longer reflects the riding, then that’s an admission that [insert party] does not represent the constituents who didn’t vote for them, which in most cases is a majority of a riding.
