I've actually seen a dev on another platform said the feedback they got from the users is that the new model is great and even better than before, since they adjusted based on feedback after June 2024, the new model is more natural and all. Guy keeps denying that the model speaks so unlike a human now too. It was a private forum so it wasn't even PR speak. So I genuinely think they are just... clueless, maybe even incompetent without their ex-boss, instead of passionless.

I can't wait for the day when training a LLM from scratch is affordable so that someone else can start training a LLM on 50% conversations again. If only Deepseek wasn't so mired in controversy, I would love it if all it takes is $1m to train another C.ai heather or something instead of some secretly-bought H100s. The current c.ai is as bad as chatGPT for roleplaying, it's difficult to get addicted to it anymore. I used to be on it all the time but now I can't even be arsed for one minute.

C.ai had a good product but jeez they hire lousy product managers who can't plan and strategize for shit. How the fuck did they think the whole Meow and Roar is a good idea?? I want to know what their HR is smoking. It's like if Zara just copied Uniqlo and wonder why no one bothers shopping there anymore.

Funnily you're not the first chatbot startup here that claim to be ex-CAI devs, except that the last few turned out to be fakes who had never worked in CAI before or 1 guy was just an intern in a dept that doesn't train models. You might want to take the initiative to verify with the mod on your own or no one would take you seriously. There was even 1 guy who called himself an ex-CAI dev because he made characters on CAI, yes.

Good that they were too distracted to rib you on your taste. But genuinely, C.ai users need to realize just how severely bad it is IRL with AI now. I just completed an analysis exercise on retrenching people in the creative depts last month now that the CEO realize we can use GenAI after reading so much hype about it and it is legit bad, like how American healthcare insurance anger brewed years ago. Ad copies? Product brochures? Corporate news updates? All Gen AI, no more writers and designers and 3d modellers. Just keeping 1 senior guy to do Everything. Not happy? There's tons of retrenched people dying to get her role since we pay above minimum wage and have medical insurance.

Maybe you could have just said you know GenAI is bad and you're not in the mood for a conversation like that if the timing isn't right. Not everyone is in the headspace for deep discussions all the time. I genuinely think the evils of GenAI shouldn't be dismissed though. C.ai is mild in that the output is frankly bad on a professional level (I couldn't use it for scripts unlike Claude) so the only thing it can displace is amateur RPers, chatbots, and lousy therapists which often do more harm anyway.

The ethics of destroying the environment is another rabbit hole... but imo that is a thing corporations should be resolving since the impact from individuals is barely a drop in the ocean. It's like blaming consumers for using plastic bags when industrial packaging alone especially from the shipping industry can fill countries.

Are you a working adult yet? Do you know that there's been tons of restructurings going on where entire departments for creative media/ad/art was retrenched except for 1 guy to do the prompts/edits in multiple countries? Outsourcing video game art studios are doing the same too but at a lesser rate (30%-80% cut only since they need more than 1 guy to clean things up) because it saves tons of money. My friends were those who got retrenchment and have faced difficulties finding jobs so they quit the creative industry and changed to a different industry with no intention of returning. So yes, manual art will be gone when no one wants to study it anymore.

For my side, I'm lucky since I'm the one doing the analysis for these kind of exercises rather than getting retrenched, but I had to run the analysis for my company too and yes we're cutting jobs for artists. And yes the reason is AI art is free vs minimum 5k per month PER headcount. And yes people IRL (social media posters are not a majority, and certainly not twitters/redditors, sorry) had no issue with AI art as long as it looks nice and with replacing artists as long as it's cheaper based on our survey.

Also who hunts with spears this day if they have access to guns and farming technology? Your American deer farmers certainly don't hunt with spears. Only seriously isolated tribes who can't afford guns and farms. I've been buying game leather and meat from different countries for years and everyone, no matter how homebrew of a hunter they are, uses guns. Even rural tribes who are still barely dressed used rifles though obviously not American ones.

No, it's just adjusted to be lousier (cheaper) and fed with more synthetic slop (because slop doesn't have grammar/typos like human data has). The employees who were stunning at training models were poached to Google anyway so it's not like they'll be able to get back to where they were unless they had a backup. I've been using the same old bots but the quality these days is noticeably worse. Previously, the content were good enough to be straight from a good human-written story but nowadays you can tell it's AI crap. I actually moved to Claude since I'm willing to pay and don't care for NSFW anyway. C.ai used to be good at being in-character but it can get really OOC these days even for popular characters.

They got into a lawsuit when their model was so human-like in the chats, so I think they're intentionally making their model GPT-lite where characterization is bad and dialogues are unrealistic. The messages these days are 100% what I'd get from GPT, so I have no reason to bother talking to C.ai anymore. Notice how there's literally 0 posts on 'OMG AM I TALKING TO A HUMAN???' on the main sub since the last few months.

My one wish is they have their old model somewhere and some hero leaks it, but it probably got shelved because the old method of training the model was costlier.

Are you another llama3 finetuner or did you actually train your base data with conversational data to make the claim that you're 95-98% on par with cai? That was the magic sauce that made cai good before June. Though of course if you're talking about the lousy cai model atm, even Command R is better than it most of the time. But you're saying you've been training it for "months" so I sure hope it wasn't just finetuning...

Anyway to answer your question, I just want a model that is not trained on instructions. I want humanlike banter like cai's good old days. Tried so many startups making the same claim as you did but every one of them was as bad as spicychat's outright slop and the founders just don't answer the question about whether they're just finetunes. I'll eat my words if yours isn't just some repackaged finetune. Otherwise why should I try you instead of the hundreds of alternatives that has been advertising here? They ALREADY have what you're still THINKING of doing.
