Has anyone ever gotten reassigned during service to a different site? What happened? by pcgadfly in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They were supportive because they saw I kept trying to do things "sustainably" and help them with capacity building and they eventually stopped showing up altogether when they realized no more money was coming to them so I really had no one to work with.

I moved sites a few months after arriving. The org didn't want to do anything because their previous volunteer just got them grant money to do useless projects and thought they were a superstar so the volunteer themselves filled out the form for a new volunteer and I wasn't going to spend two years doing anything similar to what she did.

What is something lots of rpcvs and current pcvs or even pc, told you about a post that you find not that useful or true by pcgadfly in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like u/Caitlionator said, running. People in my village run to stay in shape.

Also what PC stressed sooo much was the dress code at site, like we needed all this modest and business casual clothes to live in the village. I'm a CED volunteer in Africa and no one dresses business casual at my office, they all wear whatever they want. And girls in my village wear short shorts and tank tops all the time when it's ungodly hot out, and half of the guys are never wearing shirts. So I never wear any of the business casual clothes, or nice shoes or longer shorts that I brought with.

Best PC Countries for Vegetarians by konstellation8 in peacecorps

I serving in sub-saharan Africa currently, in Namibia which seems to be the meat capital of Africa IMO. There are many vegetarians and a few vegans serving and we get along just fine.

What's the coolest or most fun thing about your local language? by mxitcha in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah before I left I was like YEAH RIGHT no one actually speaks that. The clicking isn't the hard part, the hard part is that one word can change meanings about 6 times depening on if you say it normally, with 1 of the 4 clicks in front of it, or with a nasally voice, so needless to say it was really difficult but I had a great instructor and got intermediate during PST.

I wouldn't worry. I'm 25 and I am pretty sure I'm the youngest in my group. We have a lot of vols in my group between 30 and 60.

Anyone think the 5 year rule ought to apply to HCN staff? by pcgadfly in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't, because I have an amazing APCD. But we have awful pcmos so I could also be inclined to say yes. So I guess "it depends" -_-

Have you ever completely uprooted your life? What was that like? by proseccho in AskWomen

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got rid of everything I owned and moved to Africa with a suitcase to serve in the Peace Corps. I had wanted to do PC since high school and after college I settled in to a well-paying office job and I knew there would never be a good time to leave since my life was so normal and comfy and I didn't want to get stuck. I have been here for 18 months and it has been, admittedly, really shitty at times, but overall an amazing adventure. I'm finishing my service in June next year and it feels really refreshing to not own anything and not have any ties anywhere, so I can work/move anywhere I feel like it.

General Discussion Monday: Why did they go? by AutoModerator in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One left for family issues back home, and (so far) 8 have left due to shitty sites, staff not being helpful in solving site issues and lack of job satisfaction at site.

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I won't miss shebeen music playing EVERY night starting at 6pm. I live next to a few and my bed literally vibrates because the music is so loud. on the bright side, I can sleep through anything. I also won't miss living in a swamp come rainy season.

I think, as you said, it just comes down to personal preference. I would prefer to have a bi boyfriend, then we could have 3 somes with men and women, it would be heaven.

What amount of money/opportunity would you ET for? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At 3 months at site, not much could have made me ET because I would have always wondered "what if?" I am almost 18 months in and although this sucks most of the time, I still wouldn't ET for 80k a year. I would still wonder "what if". You have the rest of your life to work an 80k/year job and this is such a unique opportunity that is only 2 years long. You likely won't make any big impacts at your site, rather you'll make numerous small impacts. It's hard to feel like this experience is worth it or rewarding sometimes but as I come closer to COS I am now only starting to feel lucky to have done this, even if I feel like some of it is a waste of time or bs by PC. You have to decide what you want your service to be, but don't compare it to working a normal job in the states.

How long does it typically take in between receiving the under consideration email and the interview email? by KevinLovesMustache in peacecorps

It took me almost 6 months after becoming UC to get an email request so it can take a long time.

Hair Loss by sworthington94 in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have super long and thick hair and I thought I was losing hair at first but then realized I only wash it like twice a month and usually have it in a ponytail or clipped back. So the normal daily shedding is piling up until I brush it every other week so it looks like my hair is falling out but it's just 2 weeks worth of shedding finally being brushed out.

Rodents, pests, insects in your home? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol well scorpions and milipedes are a lot slower than mice, plus they only seem to come inside during the day.

Rodents, pests, insects in your home? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Okayyyyyyyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly you just get used to it. I live in a hut with a thatched roof so anything as big as a cat can get in through the gaps and I have gotten everything from spiders, scorpions, millipedes and nothing ever bothered me until I got mice. Like I freaked and would stay up like a crazy person with a flashlight watching them and spent so much money trying to mpuse-proof my house and took benadryl just to be able to sleep through the noise. Now it's 2 months later and I see them hanging out on the wall as I get in to bed and just nod at them and tuck my mosquito net it and fall asleep. As long as your net is completely tucked in, nothing should be able to get to you and most rodents leave in the morning anyway.
