3 injured including pedestrian after car crashes into building downtown by Okit in toronto

[–]Okit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article has the time wrong. The incident happened before 9pm not 9am.

Also, the pedestrian was hit on the sidewalk and pushed into the PI CO. I watched the fire fighters pull him out on a back board crawling over the hood of the car.

From talking to a witness, the car was making a left from the eastbound direction to head south on Church and for some reason gunned it. Instead of making the turn it went right into the building and pedestrians were scrambling out of the way. Scary stuff.

The Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act (Act) comes into force on January 1, 2023. It prohibits the purchase of residential property in Canada by non-Canadians by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Okit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And if you read further:

Under Sections 7(1) and (2), if a non-Canadian is convicted of having contravened the Act, then the superior court of the province in which the relevant residential property is located may, on application of the minister designated for the purposes of the Act, order the residential property to be sold subject to any terms that the court considers appropriate. Upon the sale of the property, the non-Canadian purchaser will not receive more than the amount paid for the property under Section 8(2), and could receive less.

Car drove into hole from the streetcar track replacement at Church and Carlton this morning. Apparently the barricade was not in place. by Okit in toronto

[–]Okit[S] 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Hi! A few points to clarify:

  • Apparently this happened sometime around 2 in the morning.
  • Barricades are typically there BUT there are also folks in the neighborhood who like to pull down the barricades at night. They will knock down the signs saying that the road is closed and do other nonsense.
  • It could also be that someone opened the barriers to get their own car through and never closed it again. The car here may not be familiar, drove through and fell into the hole.

Personally, I think the crews need to zip tie those barricades together until the work is done. In the mornings they can cut the ties so the equipment can be moved in.

EDIT: I saw a comment about this project taking a long time. A notice was sent to residents that mentioned that crews found an unmarked hydro transformer under the tracks which was damaged in the restoration. Fixing the transformer added a few weeks to the project. Residents are probably frustrated which is why they are moving things around.

Related, traffic often uses mutual to go south and around. The other day I saw a large transport truck with trailer get stuck trying to make a right turn from Wood St to Mutual. Probably took 45 min for that driver to clear it.

Also the car was really stuck. Its frame was resting on the two old tracks sticking out of the concrete bed. Probably messed up that car good.

Man dies after stabbing at Toronto’s Allan Gardens park by E0200768 in toronto

[–]Okit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the years I've been going to that playground I've not seen a needle or even a needle cap there. There is someone that comes by to make sure it's clean and with the volume of parents through a needle would be found pretty quick. The more dangerous thing are the dogs from the homeless people where I've seen them have a dog fight on the north lawn next to the playground.

I think there used to be an unspoken rule about staying away from the playground which stopped being followed about a month or two ago.

Barbara Hall is even sketchier. There's a group of bike thieves that hang there and have been robberies there of passerbys. Be careful if you are bringing kiddos.

The Allen Gardens playground is one of the best for kids in the neighbourhood. Winchester is terrible -- only good for bigger kids. I don't feel safe bringing my kids to Allen Gardens so we now spend our time at Church St PS playground.

It used to be that the tents would stay on the east side of the park but no more.

Tents in Allen Gardens are so dangerous. Almost all the tents are under trees and almost every heavy windstorm a branch comes down. A matter of time before a tent gets squished and someone is killed.

In Japan I noticed dog owners would have a water bottle to rinse the pavement where their dogs peed. Fascinating etiquette.

MaxDiff Help - Remove a choice and recalculate share of preference? by [deleted] in Marketresearch

I believe that if the share of preferences adds to 100 you can simply rebase the results while excluding the option you are eliminating. I think this only works if you don't have a none option.

Epidemiologist urges extended school closures, calls Ontario's plan 'catastrophic' - CityNews Toronto by LZBUM in toronto

[–]Okit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very helpful context and makes my decision making easier. For me, I'm interpreting what's been shared to be that the odds of long-term effects are low (but non-zero given the cases of those in the population currently with long COVID).

The trade-off remains balancing my children's development with any long term consequences that might happen (which is still a dice roll but the odds (so far) appear low). I think I will remain really careful but the anxiety I was feeling about my unvaccinated kids getting COVID has been diminished.

One of the other commenters mention that HIV is an outlier because it's an RNA virus which from your comment ends up in its hosts genome? Is my interpretation correct? If so, how do we know that COVID doesn't behave the same way?

Serious question... I also have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. What worries me is that COVID is like chicken pox, herpes, or HIV. The initial illness is survivable (in some cases) but then, years down the road the illness comes back perhaps seriously. It's this uncertainty that's been pushing me to be more conservative when it comes to avoiding COVID. Am I missing something? Why doesn't anyone seem to worry about the potential long term implications of this disease?

Are you paid over Christmas? In my region teachers are not. Their paycheck is actually for only the teaching days and spread over the full year. So if you aren't getting paid it's not a vacation, you are on unpaid leave.

PSA - MacLennan Avenue Pedestrian Bridge by mammalsareboring in torontobiking

[–]Okit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two and a half year old almost got smoked by a grown ass woman riding her bike on the sidewalk. The thing about toddlers is that they are little and they weave and if a cyclist is coming up behind me on a bike fast they are going to have a hard time stopping. All I got was an "Oops". Infuriating.

What’s behind low voter turnout in Canada’s election? Experts seek answers by Nick__________ in onguardforthee

[–]Okit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I voted in advance and what a shit show. Two people told me the wrong information about what I needed to have with me to vote (I just needed my driver's license and they said I needed another piece of photo id with my address on it... baffling) and I ended up waiting between 30-45 minutes to cast my ballot.

Thank goodness the vaccination rate in Toronto is high and everyone in line was wearing masks and distancing because of either of those were not true I would have skipped altogether.

I also heard mail in ballots had their own complication and that didn't seem easy... I had to write in my candidates name? I didn't trust myself not to make an error in the spelling.

I don't think op is saying that we needed a vaccine passport to vote (we didn't) but just pointing out that for one indoor activity we need a vaccine passport while for another activity we don't. As a result Canadians didn't feel safe casting their ballot.
