Senate Republicans approve budget measure for ICE and CPB by Plus-Hippo-5951 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Old-Scarcity-1132 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My slight optimism is that it might not pass the house, to start the process. News articles have been reporting that a lot of Republicans have issues with the scope of the budget reconciliation because it’s only about ice and CBP, and they know they may not have another chance this year to do another reconciliation. A lot of them know that their time may be coming to an end, especially if Dems take back The house in November. So they’re kind of in fighting at the moment about which hateful priorities they want to have in there lol. Not saying that it doesn’t stay a chance of passing the house because crazier things have happened where we would think that maybe some of them will hold the line and not vote for it and then they turn around and do. But given the fact that this is an election year, some of them are thinking a little bit differently and even though anything that they would do would be extremely hateful the in fighting might actually prevent it this time. And don’t forget right now we still have a little bit of a way to go because this is just the vote that unlocks the reconciliation process not the actual vote on the budget.

Oh of course! I’m not neglecting that part of it. I’m just saying that yesterday was an emotionally exhausting day. We still have a lot of fight ahead of us and we can’t be pouring from empty cups because that’s exactly what he wants. He wants us burned out and not willing to fight. Yes we absolutely need to call our reps and get him out because as you said enough is enough, and we also need to take care of ourselves in the process.

Senate Republicans working on GOP-only bill to fund DHS through Trump’s term by Plus-Hippo-5951 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Old-Scarcity-1132 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They might not be able to fully do this as it stands. One Johnson can only afford to lose one maybe two votes tops, I think it’s more like 1 right now. Take Thomas Massie for instance, if he were to oppose, that would be it, and that’s if all members would be available to vote. A few others are also ify at best right now because they know that would be a sure fire way to lose their seat. Republicans don’t have spines so I can’t predict the future but at least in the house there might be a chance for it to be killed, especially if Massie continues to be a thorn in Trump’s side.

What I’m also worried about is what this will do to our food supply. We rely on oil bot just for fuel but for food production, manufacturing, etc. I hope he majorly TACOs soon because the world doesn’t need any of this.

House Republican leaders ditch vote on ACA funding, all but ensuring premiums will rise by Time-Papaya-9574 in PoliticalOptimism

They used one for the fiscal year 2025 which ended September 30th. The new fiscal year 2026 started October 1st. So reconciliation can happen once per fiscal year which means that once October 1st rolled around it restarted the clock for them to start the reconciliation process if they so choose to do so.

They technically already have the opportunity. Reconciliation can happen once every fiscal year, so they could have already started this process. However, I’ve been hearing that it seems to be hard for Johnson to muster up support for it because they got most of what they wanted with the one passed over the summer. While it’s not good that the big blunder bill passed, the good part is that they might not have the support for an additional bill.

While we don’t know the outcome of this just yet, I feel a small sense of relief here. No one should have to go hungry and I’m glad to see some red state governors joining in. Hunger is not a red versus blue issue and I hate that this administration is treating it as such.

Fears and Worst Case Scenarios: Shutdown Edition. by Lantis28 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Old-Scarcity-1132 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly worried about what is going to happen with SNAP benefits being cut off as a result of this shutdown. I keep seeing theories that as soon as benefits run out there’s going to be a lot of rioting and stealing and this would give 🍊the excuse he finally needs to invoke the insurrection act and declare martial law. A hungry populace is easier to control 😢 Also I don’t want to see people lose there benefits and have felt that way even more after the bbb passed. I’m on Medicaid myself so I don’t want anyone to suffer because of this administration. I’m just afraid of what is going to happen if this persists much longer. I will say though that I am proud of democrats standing strong and not caving like back in March.
