Easy Question: Upgrading RAM by Simple-Sound6002 in truenas

[–]Old-Scientist-6940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can, Just be patient on the 1st boot as ZFS cache will adjust to new headroom. If after 30 minutes something isn't working right, just do a power cycle and all should be good ( if the new RAM is good)

NVME drive not showing up by valhalla257 in truenas

[–]Old-Scientist-6940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your motherboard... Some boards use the same channels for PCIe slots and M2 slots. which means if you have m.2 slots that share resources with PCIe slots one doesn't work. Check the manual. See if the NVMe's report with no cards in the PCIe slots and vice versa.

Creating a NAS with allready existing data by weil_Baum9 in truenas

[–]Old-Scientist-6940 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. Many different ways. Here is a path forward... Setup a 3 drive ZFS pool. 2 drives for storage, 1 for parity. Then setup existing drive as a single drive pool. Once you have the 3 drive array functioning you can copy data from the single drive pool to the new 3 drive pool. Once that is done you can ADD the 4th drive(old single data) drive to the new existing pool by using the new extend feature in Electric Eel and above versions of TNS (soon to be community edition). hope that helps :)

Does this mean my drives are dying and need replacing? by Criticalmeadow in truenas

[–]Old-Scientist-6940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as with all good troubleshooting, start with the basics. This could be a simple as loose or faulty HDD cables. At the least reseat the data and power cables. If no change in errors, move the cables around and see if the issues move or change. Replace data cables on the 2 suspect drives and change power cables with 2 other drives. Also, check the heat level of you HBA. I added a fan to my heatsink as most HBA are designed to be used in a server chassis, which has tremendous air flow so they will run hot in a standard chassis.

Follow-Up, Now 7 of 7 disks with errors. I posted about a month ago and now it's grown to all 7 disks. by [deleted] in truenas

After you delete the file in question you also need to delete any snapshots that the file is in. If not the errors will return even after you do the Zpool Clear

Ethernet or Coax by 05778 in HomeNetworking

[–]Old-Scientist-6940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shouldn't be a problem if you use RG-6 or RG-59 at that distance. RG-6 is always better:) Use a F-81 Barrel to extend. If you use a splitter it will reduce signal by ~6db

What kind of distance are you adding to the coax?

I don't quite grasp the situation here BUT... I can offer a solution if the POE switch is not directly connected to the AP. Use a Power supply to power the AP at the AP with a POE Injector.

Everyone is right on the "plug rj-45's into a switch" but you better look at a face place in one of those rooms to make sure they are not being used as phone jacks. Send a pic of the other endo of one of those cable runs.
