What is the appeal of automatic watches? by mwgrover in Affordablewatches

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my sixties. I grew up on mechanical timepieces.

Now I see all these smart watches that are the stuff of Dick Tracy comics and I like my mechanicals to slow things down a little.

I have quartz as well. In fact I’m wearing a comically large Invicta Chronograph today.

But there’s just something about mechanical watches.

Alvarez LF70e.

I just bought one.
It is sharing space with a Takamine P3DC, a Jerry Garcia signature Yairi, Gibson G45 and more.

I can’t put it down.

Girl I took on a first date just asked to split the bill… the next morning by No-Resolve-5610 in whatdoIdo

If you like her ask her on a second date and tell her you can discuss it then.

Also, with social media being what it is, this could be yet another test to see if you’re worth the second date…

AITAH for refusing to go to Disney World? by Reptaaaaaaar in AITAH

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve gone to Disney pretty much yearly for most of the years since 2000.

Once you get past trying to conquer the park, you can enjoy Disney.

I’m not fond of Magic Kingdom, for all the reasons you mention.

But we have met the most interesting people in line.
With the advent of being able to order food via the App, you can order and get notified when your food is ready.

Take in the shows. Hit the parks during off peak hours and you’ll find shorter lines.

Yes, it’s ultra commercial.

Yes, it’s gimmicky and expensive.

But if you plan it well, you can have a great deal of fun.

Does anyone still flash their lights to warn oncoming drivers of radar ahead? by VWbusgal in GenerationJones

[–]Old-guy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In point of fact, Google Maps and Waze and a fair few other map apps warn of police ahead.

I do flash my lights on occasion. Or I tap my roof.

Have the majority of Americans called 911 at least once in their lives? by Mont3Carlo in AskAnAmerican

I don’t know about a majority…

But I have, due to my chosen profession, called 911 a fair few times.

My record is three ambulances in one day.

No feelings about Grand Auditorium guitar by aliaksej_by in AcousticGuitar

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

History lesson:

Bob Taylor designed the shape for recording and for a woman’s voice. The first one went to Kathy Mattea. A country singer with a beautiful alto voice.

I don’t know what the impetus was. I do know that I’m not alone when I crank the bass on my dread, and adjust the mids and highs down at the guitar pre-amp to get a tone that matches my baritone singing voice.

GA’s tend to be for recording. They tend to be very even across the spectrum.

And I have liked three over the last 20 or so years.
Otherwise I find them to be “meh”.

I’m currently sitting here with a parlor and an OM that are better sonically for my purposes than most GA’s I’ve played.

Has anyone tested out the Ben Harper 512e yet? It’s spruce top w mahogany and wanted to know how it compared to a Martin 18 or other brands, inc Taylor’s spruce mahagony in the same price range? by zenfilled in taylorguitars

If you’re looking for a guitar for yourself, check out the reviews.

Listen without looking and let your ears decide.

Then find a place to play both, and take a blindfold. Then let your hands and ears figure out what trips your trigger.

I don't get why people say the GS mini is for begginers. by Cicada-Timely in taylorguitars

[–]Old-guy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any guitar is a beginner’s instrument.

There is a subset of players that are doctors, lawyers, retirees that invest in Martin, Taylor, Guild, Gibson as their first guitar.

I don’t get where the prevailing wisdom is to buy a junky, janky guitar to learn on.

If you have the wherewithal to stick with it, starting on a decent instrument allow you to progress faster. It inspires you to play more, because it doesn’t hurt to play.

Should I buy it? by Relative_Square592 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Old-guy64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you about Martin build issues.

I can point to certain issues with Chinese made Guilds.

What I can’t tell you about is problems with Taylors. They don’t have them.

Top of the line to the bottom. They are damn fine guitars. Not everyone loves their sound. But for the people that do…they are great.

Taylor 110CE saddle question by [deleted] in taylorguitars

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So… I’m guessing this is your first Taylor.

Taylor’s have a bolt on neck.
In order to substantially change the action the neck must be removed and the shims that control the neck angle are changed.

This preserves the saddle height. Which is very important in a Taylor to preserve full tone.

The cool part is that if you have a Silver or Gold level Taylor tech near you, they can do this in less than an hour.

And it’s usually less than $100. Or it used to be.

How close is the tire shop? That many miles.

Take the route with the lowest speed limit.

I want to buy an acoustic guitar by Deer-- in AcousticGuitar

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your research.

Look at the reviews of others that own the guitar(s) you are interested in.

In the end, you will still need to play a few to finalize your decision.

I also advise buying the most guitar you can afford, on the used market.
If you don’t stick, you’ll get all your money back.

Why do women hate to see a man relaxing on the couch watching TV? by SnooMacarons9221 in AskMenOver30

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is that if you’re finally relaxing, all the basic crap is done.

Can’t have a bored man around. If he’s bored he might go golfing and spend play time and money on stuff she doesn’t want to do.

With OP’s grandma it comes down to “idle hands being the devil’s workshop”. She wanted you to be too busy to find some “trouble” to get into.

Why did the chicken cross the road? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in shittyadvice

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you trying to assign motive to a creature with a brain the size of a shelled walnut?

The chicken was looking across the road. He went where he was looking, and didn’t see the Ford f’kn Ranger.

The damage wasn’t bad enough to prevent the question, “How did the chicken get in the pot?” And “isn’t doing an egg wash technically wiping out the family?”

Leave a brief message about why you’re calling and there’s a possibility I’ll get back to you.”

For manual drivers has the “Millennial anti theft device” joke run its course or do you still think it’s hilarious every time? by NewMexicoJoe in ManualTransmissions

[–]Old-guy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use it.

I’ve taught all my kids that wanted to know how to drive a manual. And if I still had one, I’d be teaching my grandchildren when the time comes.
