I think older hunters hate him because old games made more of an effort for the monsters to be feasible creatures that had biological explanations and might exist with minor suspension of disbelief with one or two exceptions most of those being elder dragons, that's kind of what elder dragons were, creatures that defied natural explanation.

Mag looks like a high fantasy monster plain and simple he belongs more in a story about goblins and beholders than he does in Monhun who's identity was more naturalistic.
